Students from DU help build 'net zero' home | Denver Real Estate ...

DENVER -?You think getting a college degree is hard? Just try building a house while you?re finishing up all those class credits before graduation day.

Students from DU?s School of Real Estate and Construction Management are required to finish a home from design to build-out and sale before they get to graduate. The project is the ?capstone? class for their major, and completing the home means they?ve completed their major.?

The latest graduating class?of the Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate Construction Management?helped Oakwood Homes?build?a $315,000 ?Net Zero Energy? home whose energy saving features could serve as a?guide for production building across the country.

A net-zero home is one that creates at least as much energy as it consumes, in some cases even returning energy to the grid. The students received hands-on supervisory experience. The nine-month course wrapped up when the 2,100-square-foot, four-bedroom, 2.5-bath house was finished and opened.

For insurance reasons, the students didn?t actually cut lumber, swing hammers or drill holes, but they did just about everything else, including serving as leads in construction and marketing.
The home?overlooks the ninth green of Green Valley Ranch Golf Course, and is a?cooperative effort between DU and Oakwood Homes.

The students say the experience was invaluable, since it moved beyond theory and gave them real-life work experience that they can now put on a resume.
