Seed Co urges boost in food production

SEED CO has encouraged farmers to maximise production to reduce the effects of looming global food shortages. A boost in food production will ensure the country?s food security and reduce money spent on imports.

Speaking at a hand over ceremony of funds towards the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union golf tournament, Seed Co public relations and communications manager Ms Majorie Mutemererwa said Zimbabwe was not immune to looming global food shortages. To this end, there was need for farmers to increase production.

?We feel that farmers play a vital role in the ensuring food security and also contribute towards the economy of the country. While farmers should work hard to feed the nation there is also need to find some time from the field and interact with each other,? she said.

Ms Mutemererwa who handed over US$250 donation towards the tournament said functions like these were essential to facilitate a break and interaction of farmers with other stakeholders in the agriculture industry.

?While it may seem to be a sporting activity, some farmers may learn new business ideas from this golf tournament through interaction with their counterparts,? she said.

Speaking at the same function, ZCFU secretary-general, Eng Adiel Karima said his organisation was willing to work with Seed Co and the seed company had always been forthcoming to the union?s assistance.

?We hope to hold more business with the company, making sure that farmers will sustain this relationship by giving Seed Co continued business,? he said.

Eng Karima encouraged farmers to attend social gatherings, as they are platforms of knowledge exchange.

More wheat planted this season

MORE than 9 700 hectares of wheat have been planted so far, an increase of 56 percent from last year?s 6 222 hectares.

The crop is reported to be in good condition in most parts of the country.

The latest information from Agritex is that the planted wheat is at emergence stage while some of it is at the tilling stage and 27 percent is in the late vegetative stage.

Wheat production has been declining over the years as farmers continue to face problems of late availability of inputs, constant power cuts and lack of funding.

Consumers have recently encountered shortages of bread, attributed to flour scarcity. Zimbabwe requires 450 000 tonnes of wheat every year.

But it is currently producing less than 100 000 tonnes. As a result it is now a net importer of the cereal.

Mashonaland West has the biggest area under wheat at 3 130ha, compared with 1 761 last year.

Of the hectares planted, 20 percent is at emergence stage, 62 percent is at early vegetative and 18 at the tilling stage.

The crop in the province is reported to be in good condition, although persistent power cuts could affect the yield.

Mashonaland Central has 1 522ha under wheat, with 35 percent at emergence stage, 24 percent at early vegetative and 41 percent at tilling.

A hectare of wheat has been planted in Guruve representing a decrease from last year?s 20ha.

At least 32ha of wheat have been planted in Muzarabani and the crop, which is at early vegetative and tilling stages, is reported to be in good condition.

Herbicides, pesticides and fungicides, though expensive, are available on the open market.

But power cuts are affecting irrigation and are likely to affect yields.

Mashonaland East has 1 436ha under wheat with 24 percent of the crop currently at emergence stage, 3 percent at early vegetative stage, 52 percent at tilling stage and 21 percent at late vegetative stage.

The crop is reportedly good in all the districts.

Although power cuts are also affecting irrigation cycles, there are no reports of severe moisture stress.

In Manicaland, 1 338ha have been planted, compared with 1 307ha planted during the same period last year.

Of the planted hectarage, 38 percent is at emergence stage, 48 percent at early vegetative and 14 percent at tilling stage.

In terms of provincial total, Nyanga district has planted 80ha, 73 percent less than last year?s.

Chimanimani has 76ha compared with 180ha last year.

But Makoni district has registered an increase of 123 percent from last season?s 186ha to 415ha this year. The crop is in ?fair to good? condition.

Midlands province has doubled wheat production this season with 831ha planted this year from last season?s 448ha.

Of the province?s total for, Kwekwe has 623 ha, representing an increase from last year?s 345 ha.

The crop is generally in good condition. although constant power cuts are threatening production.

Masvingo has so far planted 377ha, a decline from 533ha from last year.

The crop is in good condition with 98 percent of it at early vegetative stage and the remaining 2 percent at emergence stage.

Schemes to benefit 250 000 farmers

AT least 250 000-smallholder farmers will benefit from the revival of agro-dealership programmes meant to improve their access to technology and inputs.

This will ultimately improve productivity.

The farmers will be drawn from four of the country?s 10 provinces.

Farmer unions, newly trained agro-dealers and a local non-governmental organisation are carrying out the agro-dealership revival programme throughout the country.

Under the scheme, agro-dealers will receive training and technical assistance in setting up their agro-dealerships as well as sponsorship for short-term credit from agriculture input supply companies in dry provinces such as Masvingo, Matebeleland North and South as well as the Midlands.

Zimbabwe Farmers Union president Mr Silas Hungwe said the perennial challenge facing local farmers in acquiring inputs in urban centres and high transport costs could be brought to an end by spreading agro-dealerships.

Outgoing programme director for the Agro-dealer Strengthening Programme in Zimbabwe Mr Raymond Waldron said the initiative should become long term to ensure farmers have access to inputs.

The agro-dealers strengthening programme anticipates to improve production by 35 percent and cash income by 23 percent for the farmers involved.

Support and training to agro-dealers is geared to bring agro-dealer services closer to the country?s poorest farmers and revamp the market linkages between agro-suppliers and grassroots retailers.

In the recent past, countries in the Comesa grouping formed the Comesa Regional Agro Inputs Programme (COMRAP) designed to foster the emergence of improved financial packages aimed at smallholder farmers and agro-dealers.

Under the programme, Comesa will prepare banks to better assist smallholders and agro-dealers through organising training workshops where over 700 bank executives and front office staff and over 100 insurance officers will meet and interact with over 100 000 farmers.

The programme will contribute to increased access to structural financial services to farmers and reduce interest rates and increase the volume of loans to smallholders.

COMRAP programme is funded by the European Union and falls under the Common Market for East and Southern Africa and is being implemented by Comesa?s specialised agency, the Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa (ACTESA).

The programme is currently being implemented in eight Comesa countries.

Agro-dealerships had over the years disappeared owing to a number of challenges encountered during implementation.

SERBIA has pledged to assist Zimbabwe in resuscitating the agriculture industry particularly in the department of mechanisation.

This will see the country getting assistance on agriculture machinery, implements and irrigation equipment.

Speaking after a meeting with the Serbian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Goran Vujicic, Agriculture Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Joseph Made said the two parties had agreed to work together in different sectors of the agriculture industry.

He said the two parties agreed on the need to modernise agriculture to meet the increasing clientele of new farmers who came on board as a result of the land reform programme.

?The old and new farmers require support in terms of machinery and equipment. We will be considering tillage, tractive machinery, harvesting machinery and irrigation equipment,? he said.

This will see Serbia partially manufacturing agriculture machinery and equipment in Zimbabwe.

?Serbia will be manufacturing 30 percent of machinery while the remaining 70 percent will be done in Zimbabwe,? he said.

Minister Made said this would give Zimbabwe the opportunity to resuscitate agriculture industry and lead to employment of many people.

The two parties also discussed on agro-processing as another way of co-operation.

Minister Made said while local farmers were capable of producing there was need for adequate knowledge on processing of the produced commodities according to market requirements.

Thus local farmers could take advantage of the vast knowledge and experience of agro-processing from Serbia.

?We agreed to work together so that we can have our processed agricultural commodities jointly put on the world market,? he said.

To consolidate this the two parties agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of agriculture.

A cluster of companies visiting Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa will follow this.

A delegation from Zimbabwe is also expected to visit Serbia to look their agriculture activities.

Minister Made said Serbia was one of the strong countries in the world in terms of good machinery and reasonable prices.

Amb Vujicic said his country was ready to assist Zimbabwe to achieve a complete turn around in its agriculture sector.

?We would want to boost our relations with Zimbabwe in the filed of agriculture.

?We understand Zimbabwe has an economic crisis but we would want to do our best to bring the best assistance to the people of Zimbabwe,? he said.

He expressed confidence that the exchange of delegations and signing of the MoU will see the revival of Zimbabwe?s agriculture as the two countries co-operate in agriculture.

Zimbabwe?s relationship with Serbia dates back to the liberation struggle.

It is officially summer. That means my ex and I, like many other divorced couples, have a different parenting schedule. During the summer we?re supposed to alternate weeks. I say supposed to because we aren?t. We don?t even have a schedule worked out. Part of that is because my son has been away for two separate weeks already and in just over two weeks, the kids and I are leaving for our trip. For the most part, the kids are at my house but on any given evening, one or both of them might announce they?re going to dad?s. And that?s OK with me.

I think this is a sign of how far we?ve come in our post-divorce relationship that we can be flexible over our parenting schedule. We know neither one of us is going to try to monopolize the kids, or try to influence the kids against spending time with the other parent. I think we trust each other and that?s feels good.

My ex is a teacher and since our schools are not on a year-round schedule, it means he has more free time than I do now. So I?ve been looking for ways he can help out more. For example, my son is learning to drive and he really needs to be out driving every day, just getting the practice. Getting my ex to take him out is a win-win-win ? my ex is happy to take my son driving, my son wants to drive and I don?t have the time to take my son driving as much as I think he needs.

My ex is also a shopper. I am not. Since our divorce, I am a much more intentional shopper but I don?t have anywhere near the patience or stamina for shopping that he has. So this week, when my computer techie* delivered the news that my son?s four-year-old laptop wasn?t worth working on and should be retired, I enlisted my ex?s help,

Do you have time and would you like to go buy a new laptop?

Sure! I was ninety-nine percent certain he wouldn?t say no, given that he is a technology education teacher and loves to shop. Did I say that already?

My computer techie suggested the specs for a new machine and off my ex and son went. First stop, Staples where the saleslady tried to tell him the machine he was going to buy had a bad rap and that he should buy a service agreement that cost more than the machine. That didn?t make much sense.

Next stop, Office Depot where this particular machine was more expensive than the Staples price so they agreed to match the price and then there was a $50 mail-in rebate, in addition. Score one laptop for $300 and another win-win-win!

It?s been over four and a half years since we separated ? I don?t think I was so willing to enlist his help back then. I think I was intent on proving that I was capable of doing it all.? It feels good to know now I don?t have to do it all.

*I learned very early on that every single-woman needs a good handyman. I also think your support network needs to include a good computer guru ? I?m happy to ask my ex for help with the kids machines but I need someone else to work on my machine.

Do any of you know of a wall calendar for children aged nine and twelve, that could be used to show their parenting schedule? What are you using?

My kids were older when we separated ? eleven and fourteen and since we were on an every other weekend schedule, I think it was pretty straight forward for them but I can definitely see where something bright and colorful could help younger children settle into a new routine.

This weekend, my daughter and I are shopping for college dorm needs. I?m feeling very conflicted about this ? I?m happy she wants me to come with her but I dread the thought of getting dragged round store after store after store; my ex would probably like to do this but the combination of my daughter, my ex and this shopping just spells disaster. However, with temperatures forecasted for the low nineties, at least if I?m shopping I?ll be in air-conditioning. I guess I can be thankful for that.

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? The massive US budget deficit means the United States will be unable to use deficit spending to stimulate the economy for many years to come, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Friday.

"It's not going to be possible in the next decade. We've lost the chance," Geithner told a conference in New Hampshire.

"We no longer have the luxury of that approach."

Geithner said the $787 billion dollar economic stimulus passed in 2009 by Congress "was absolutely timely" but a temporary effort in response to the economic crisis.

"We'll have at some point to pay that debt," he said.

His comments come amid an impasse between the US administration and Republican lawmakers on curbing the budget deficit and lifting the debt ceiling to allow additional US borrowing.

The collapse of the talks on Thursday sparked fears that Congress will fail to raise the $14.29 trillion debt ceiling by an August 2 deadline and force the United States into a default which could trigger global economic shockwaves.

Currently, the US budget deficit is forecast to reach $1.6 trillion this year.

NEW YORK ? Michael Douglas' ex-wife has lost a bid to revive her quest for half his "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" earnings in a New York court, ending the latest episode in a bitter sequel to their multimillion-dollar divorce.

A Manhattan judge reiterated in a ruling Thursday that the cash clash belongs in California, where the couple divorced in 2000 after 23 years together. Cooper threw out Diandra Douglas's suit for the same reasons in November, but she asked him to reconsider.

"This court adheres to its original decision holding that the California court has exclusive jurisdiction over this dispute" since a provision in their divorce deal says so, state Supreme Court Justice Matthew F. Cooper wrote.

Even before the decision, Diandra Douglas had filed a notice that she plans to appeal to a higher court. Still, Michael Douglas' lawyer, Marilyn Chinitz, said she hoped Cooper's ruling "would be the last of it."

His ex-wife's lawyer, Nancy Chemtob, didn't immediately respond to email messages this week.

The couple's divorce deal gives Diandra Douglas an equal share of spin-offs from projects the actor did when they were married.

She says that should include last year's follow-up to "Wall Street," the 1987 Oliver Stone film that won Michael Douglas an Academy Award for his portrayal of an era-encapsulating financier who declared that "greed is good." The actor's camp says the divorce agreement doesn't apply to the second "Wall Street," which wasn't in the works when the couple split. Released in September, it grossed more than $100 million worldwide.

The legal fight has taken on a sharper tone as it continued. Her lawyers, meanwhile, mentioned his recent purchase of a $5 million-plus home near New York and his children's private schools. Outside court, Diandra Douglas lamented the "mudslinging" she felt was directed at her.

Fewer than 1 in 5 of the children who relied on free or reduced-price lunches during the 2009-2010 school year in California received subsidized meals last July, according to a new report.

That represents a 15% drop in participation in summer meals programs from the year before at a time when enrollment in other federal nutrition programs is increasing because of the lingering effects of the recession.

The report by California Food Policy Advocates blamed cuts to the state's education budget, which caused many school districts to eliminate summer learning and enrichment programs. That reduced the places where needy students received breakfasts, lunches and snacks during the summer months.

The "summer nutrition gap" jeopardizes the health and academic success of about 2 million low-income children in California, where many families are facing unemployment and other financial hardships that have them struggling to meet basic needs, the report said.

This growing gap is part of a nationwide trend, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Food Research and Action Center, which calculated that just 1 in 7 American children who received subsidized lunches uring the school year received them last summer.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds three summer nutrition programs that subsidize meals served at schools, parks, recreation centers and other locations where at least half the children are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

Participation in those programs in California peaked at more than 800,000 children a day in 2002, according to the report, which was based on data from the state Department of Education for the month of July. About 410,000 California children received subsidized lunches in July 2010.

Local governments, nonprofits and other groups have been stepping in to reach more children using funding from the federal Summer Food Service Program, which reimburses for meals served at community sites. Participation in that program increased 26% from July 2009 to July 2010 but did not make up for losses in the National School Lunch Program and Seamless Summer Food Option, which are school-based. Meals subsidized by school-based programs were offered at about 4,200 sites last July, fewer than half the number the previous year.

The Los Angeles Unified School District, the state's largest, has increased the number of sites that offer free breakfasts, lunches and snacks even though it canceled the majority of summer school offerings for a third year because of budget shortfalls.

In July 2010, more than a million subsidized meals were served at 260 L.A. Unified schools, four times as many as the previous year when the program was available at only 95 schools, according to Laura Benavidez, deputy director of food services. This summer, free meals will be offered at 300 schools that offer learning or enrichment programs.

Lidia Albisures, a 43-year-old single mother with two children at Union Avenue Elementary and two at Belmont High, said she relies on free school lunches to help keep her family healthy. Until two weeks ago, she was earning about $100 a week as a nanny. But the family she worked for moved out of the area.

She receives food stamps but starts running out of food about halfway through the month. "It's very difficult for me" to put food on the table, Albisures said.

The Los Angeles city and county parks and recreation departments, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and other groups will also be offering free meals and snacks to children ages 1 to 18 at sites throughout the county. To find a location, parents can call the county's information hotline, 211.

Such efforts to feed children in schools and community centers appear to be making a difference, said Matthew Sharp, a senior advocate with California Food Policy Advocates. Although the number of Los Angeles County children receiving lunches from federal summer meal programs declined 6% from July 2009 to July 2010, that was a smaller drop than in some other nearby counties. Participation fell 30% in Riverside, 26% in San Bernardino, 23% in San Diego and 7% in Orange counties.

A report on manufacturing in the New York area also came in far below forecasts.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 179 points, or 1.5 percent, to close at 11,897. The S&P 500 index fell 22, or 1.7 percent, to 1,265. The Nasdaq fell 47, or 1.8 percent, to 2,631.

Five shares fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading volume was 4.2 billion shares.

These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy.

The symptoms of colorectal cancer depend on the location of tumor in bowel and whether it has spread to elsewhere in the body (metastasis). Most of the symptoms may occur in other diseases as well, and hence none of the symptoms mentioned here is diagnostic of colorectal cancer. Symptoms and signs are divided into local, constitutional (affecting the whole body) and metastatic (caused by spread to other organs).

In other words, anal cancer would be a cancerous tumor located at or near the anus or the opening to the bowel.

Colon cancer would be a cancerous tumor located somewhere in the bowel including cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix.
