Perhaps a bit of concept car fantasy, but Ford showed off a novel idea in its brutish Atlas Concept: active wheel shutters. Open spoked wheels look cool and aid in brake cooling, but on the highway they develop quite a bit of aerodynamic drag. On the Atlas Concept, each wheel has a set of six shutters that open and close electrically to improve aerodynamics. We're not sure how this feature would keep from getting gummed up by even the slightest hint of a muddy, off-road excursion, so color us skeptical on the production likelihood.
