Obesity: it is a weighty problem indeed, and one that is illustrated by a pair of scientific studies out this week.
Both studies have their detractors but let?s look at what they bring to the table.
One of them makes it clear how fast obesity is gobbling up America. The other examines a weight-loss strategy that seems to be working.
In the not too distant past, school kids could skip the cafeteria and head right for dessert ? in a coin-operated machine.
But starting this year in the Houston Independent School District, a dietician is vetting the vending machines, ensuring the food they serve is in line with what?s served, well, in line.
?In order to really make the strides in health that we need, particularly for HISD students, many of whom are at risk of obesity or overweight, we need to make sure that any type of food offering really meets the standards,? said Brian Giles, HISD?s senior administrator of food services.
And the standards have been tightened, according to Associate Professor Susie Day with the UT School of Public Health.
?They have made great strides over the last few years to improve the nutritional content of the food served in our schools,? said Day.
