Duties & Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a
communications strategy for the Law School's Development and Alumni Relations programs. This position reports to the Executive Director of
Advancement Services, with a dotted reporting line to the Assistant Dean for Communications. Has primary responsibility for writing,
editing, and preparing a wide-variety of content and collateral material in support of programs and activities, including alumni profiles,
press releases, event summaries, solicitation appeals, event remarks, and case statements. Has responsibility for developing, packaging, and
delivering messages and materials to internal and external audiences using a variety of media. Creates communications plans for key
announcements, events, and gift drives. Develops messaging and collateral materials for Alumni Relations programs and events including Class
Reunions and Alumni Association programs. Serves as project manager and editor for a wide range of communications initiatives. Oversees the
production of the HLS Annual Report of Gifts. Designs and produces digital and print publications coordinated with vendors and in
collaboration with HLS Communications Team. Collaborates with HLS Assistant Dean for Communications on content and branding standards for
all printed and digital media such as: event invitations and programs, publication graphics, banners, as well as design for web material.
Collaborates with HLS Communications team on the selection, bundling and distribution of news items for HLS Alumni Newsletter. Has
responsibility for managing content for the Development and Alumni website. Provides timely and consistent updates of University
announcements and projects. Maintains collaborative relationships with University Development Office and the Harvard Alumni Association,
and, may serve on selected local and university committees.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor degree and five or more years related experience.
Additional Qualifications:
Progressive work experience in journalism, marketing and communications strategy
development and implementation, to include creative use of media; significant experience in higher education philanthropy or closely related
service organization required. Strong writing, copy editing, and proofreading skills required, with excellent attention to detail. Must be
an adept and versatile reporter, writer, and editor. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of success in positions of
progressive responsibility in communications and be well organized, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
Experience with digital communication channels and social media is strongly desired, as is the ability to work with content management systems. Demonstrated project management skills (e.g. conception; building consensus; delivery) with experience working in a complex organization with diverse constituencies. The ideal candidate must have exceptional interpersonal skills as well as possess a high level of creativity, with the ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team. As projects typically move swiftly, successful candidate will be a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment. Must exhibit a high degree of professional discretion and good judgment. Must have experience working with and managing service providers. Experience working with content systems is strongly preferred. Familiarity with current web trends and tools, including social media and conversational media. Familiarity with HTML and CSS coding. Familiarity with graphic and web design and Adobe Creative Suite. Familiarity with CRM and email clients. Must have flexibility to work selected evenings and weekends to staff activities and events.
