(AP) ? The Texas Rangers say they're investigating a claim by pitcher Tanner Scheppers that he was attacked in downtown Cleveland last week.

Scheppers said he was "sucker-punched by several young males" while going out to dinner a few blocks from the team's hotel Thursday night. He sustained facial cuts and bruises, and said his attackers ran away.

Cleveland-based entertainment website Scene reported Sunday that Scheppers verbally instigated the incident. The website cited a witness without giving the person's name.

The Cleveland Police Department said Sunday that Scheppers was involved in a physical altercation at 2:30 a.m. Friday. The statement said Scheppers "refused to provide information and refused to make a police report."

Scheppers pitched a scoreless inning in Sunday's 6-0 loss to the Indians, his first work since the altercation.

Approached by reporters following the game, Scheppers tersely said, "I already told you guys everything. I don't have any more to say about it. A lot of what's out there is lies."

The Rangers issued a statement that said they had been in contact with Cleveland police and the Indians.

"Until our investigation is complete, no one from the organization will have any further comment on this matter," the team said.

Scheppers first addressed the incident before Saturday night's game. The Rangers arrived in Cleveland on Thursday night following their afternoon game in Texas.

The 26-year-old Scheppers said he was knocked to the sidewalk, but never lost consciousness. He said he had a headache at the time but didn't sustain a concussion.

Scheppers, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 200 pounds, said police were called but no report was filed. The team informed Major League Baseball security.

"They (the police) said it happens a lot, actually," Scheppers said then. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The police statement Sunday said officers called for EMS help at the scene and Scheppers "refused medical attention." Police said officers took Scheppers and another unidentified man back to the team hotel.

China: Toddler Pulled From Pram And 'Murdered'

A two-year-old girl who was thrown to the ground by a man during a row over a parking space in Beijing has died, state media say.

A witness told the Beijing Times that the man, identified only by his surname Han, wanted to park by a bus stop in Beijing.

But the toddler's mother, who was on foot, would not move out of his way as she tending to her daughter at the time.

Han got out of his car and allegedly hit the woman before taking the girl out of her pram, holding her up and throwing her "forcefully" to the ground, said the witness, a street-stall owner surnamed Zhou.

"The baby made no noises after being dropped, not even a cry of pain," the newspaper quoted Zhou as saying.

Another man came out of the car and also beat the mother before the pair drove away, it added.

Police reportedly found Han, who was released from prison this year after serving a sentence for theft, in a hot spring bathhouse and detained him.

"Han was put in criminal detention on suspicion of intentional homicide on Thursday afternoon," state news agency Xinhua said, citing the Beijing Security Bureau.

Han could face the death penalty if he is convicted of murder.

The incident sparked outrage on Chinese social media as weibo users vilified the attackers and expressed grief over the toddler's fate.

"When you come back in another life, dear baby, be sure to be born in another country," one user wrote.

Another weibo user called the attackers "perverse animals" and a third called for the death penalty as punishment.

"For this kind of murderer with an evil nature, the death penalty should be carried out immediately," the post said.

EU regulator accepts Penguin offer to end dodgy e-book deals with Apple

EU regulator accepts Penguin offer to end dodgy ebook deals with Apple

After the European Commission accepted offers from Apple and four publishers to free up e-book pricing restrictions in December 2012, it's now accepted Penguin's commitment to do the same. Much like Penguin's vow to the US DOJ, it will end its agency agreements with Apple and other retailers, and "most-favored nation" clauses will be absent from any new deals struck over the next five years. Most importantly, e-book retailers will now be able to control prices and discounts of Penguin's catalog for two years. This legally binding pledge essentially brings an end to EC's "competitive concerns," as all involved in the original price-fixing investigation have now settled up.

Asian stocks static as risk from China offset by Fed

Asian stocks ended the week almost unchanged as the IMF said risks of a slowdown in Chinese growth are increasing while the US Federal Reserve allayed concerns that the US is planning to curb stimulus.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told a US House of Representatives committee there was no preset course for the US central bank?s asset purchases, tempering speculation the Fed would begin to trim its US$85 billion-a-month bond-buying program as early as September.

GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd surged 13 percent this week on speculation that tariffs on polysilicon shipped to China will cut supplies from the US and South Korea, boosting earnings at the world?s largest maker of materials used in solar panels.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, ???) the world?s largest contract manufacturer of chips, slumped 11 percent after forecasting sales that trailed analysts? estimates.

Nissan Motor Co, a Japanese carmaker that gets about 80 percent of sales abroad, climbed for a third week as the yen weakened against the US dollar.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index ended the week at 134.93, up from 134.88 on July 12, to continue its longest streak of gains since the week ending on March 15.

Gains on the benchmark regional equities gauge were limited to 4.3 percent this year, compared with an 18 percent surge on the Standard & Poor?s 500 Index, as concern mounted that a manufacturing slowdown in China and the worst cash shortage in a decade may curb earnings growth.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index is trading at 13.2 times average estimated earnings, compared with 15.3 for the S&P 500 and 13.4 times for the STOXX Europe 600 Index, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

For the week, the TAIEX ? led by TSMC ? dropped 1.9 percent, ending at 8,062.03 on Friday from 8,220.49 on July 12.

TSMC tumbled 11 percent to NT$98.20 as the Hsinchu-based firm forecast third-quarter sales of as much as NT$164 billion (US$5.5 billion) in the three months ending on September, compared with the NT$164.5 billion average of 25 analysts? estimates compiled by Bloomberg before the announcement. The chipmaker is the largest company on the TAIEX, comprising 11 percent of the benchmark.

Other big names that fell on Friday included smartphone maker HTC Corp (???), which fell by the daily limit of 7 percent to NT$168.5, and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (????), which shed 0.77 percent to NT$77.4.

Elsewhere, Hong Kong?s Hang Seng Index added 0.4 percent, China?s Shanghai Composite Index fell 2.3 percent and South Korea?s KOSPI advanced 0.1 percent.

Australia?s S&P/ASX 200 Index ended the week little changed as the Reserve Bank of Australia said the Australian dollar?s decline and interest rate cuts meant its policy setting was appropriate even as it maintained room for future reductions, according to minutes of its July 2 meeting. New Zealand?s NZX 50 Index fell 0.7 percent.

The TOPIX climbed 0.8 percent this week, a fifth straight weekly gain in the biggest such advance since April 2009 and the longest winning streak since February.

Japanese shares topped gains this year among 24 major developed equity markets tracked by Bloomberg News. The TOPIX surged 41 percent and the Nikkei 225 Stock Average soared 40 percent this year as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda push to stoke inflation to 2 percent.

Former Union Counsel Said to be Next NLRB GC

It seems Democrats have found a way to break the dysfunctional political stalemate on the National Labor Relations Board by bringing in a new general counsel to replace acting GC Lafe Solomon.

Citing sources, the Huffington Post reports that former union general counsel Richard Griffin is expected to be offered the NLRB GC job.

Republicans had blocked Solomon?s confirmation to the job for over three years. They were outraged when, in his role as acting GC, he filed a complaint against The Boeing Company, which built a new plant and tried to move work on a new airplane from Washington State to anti-union South Carolina. Boeing compromised and the complaint was later dropped.

It was not immediately known what Solomon, a career NLRB attorney who started as a field examiner in Seattle in 1972, will do next if Griffin succeeds him.

The HuffPost said the appointment of Griffin as GC and the naming of two new NLRB members were part of the filibuster compromise reached in the Senate this week.

Griffin is one of two people originally named to the NLRB over a year ago by President Barack Obama as recess appointments. A federal court ruled the appointments illegal, but the Senate compromise appears to have resolved that sticky issue.

The White House said Tuesday it would nominate two new members to the board. They are Nancy Schiffer, a former AFL-CIO associate general counsel, and Kent Hirozawa, the current chief counsel to the chair of the labor board.

Griffin previously served as general counsel for the International Union of Operating Engineers, working his way up from assistant house counsel and associated general counsel; on the board of directors for the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee; and as a counsel to NLRB board members.

After his appointment in 2012, Fox News called Griffin the ?top lawyer for [a] union tainted by mob ties.? It said the heavy equipment operators union was ?tainted over the years by mob connections and a history of corruption.?

But Fox did not accuse Griffin personally of any wrongdoing.

The job of NLRB general counsel is independent from the board. The GC is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of unfair labor practice cases and for the general supervision of the NLRB field offices in the processing of cases.

Unconventional pastor leads booming NYC megachurch

NEW YORK (AP) ? Carl Lentz is not your typical pastor.

Along with his half shaved head and slicked back Mohawk, he's dressed in his usual Sunday attire: black jeans and an unbuttoned denim shirt with a tank top underneath. His tattooed arms, including one with two guns crossed, peek out from under his rolled-up sleeves.

His Hillsong Church NYC holds at least six sermons every Sunday in a ballroom-style concert venue that has hosted such bands as U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. People squeeze into whatever space they can find and take notes on iPhones as Lentz marches across the stage, peppering his sermon with Bible verses, jokes, pop music lines and street slang.

"If you're new to our church, we love you," said the 34-year-old Lentz. "Don't be alarmed by the craziness you see. One time somebody said, 'Y'all are crazy in your church,' and I said, 'You ever seen you dance drunk? Don't be judging us up in church.'"

New York has become a magnet for startup evangelical churches in recent years. There are currently more than 200 in Manhattan alone, according to Tony Carnes of the research project, A Journey Through NYC Religions, and Hillsong is one of the fastest growing.

After a little more than two years, Hillsong estimates it draws 5,500 people to Sunday services each week. Crowds lining up are a regular weekly scene at Irving Plaza near Manhattan's Union Square. Hillsong often has to add additional evening sessions, which could last well into the night.

"I've gotten used to seeing bar stools and club stuff in the place that we have church," Lentz said, adding "that's church to me now."

Steve Dagrossa, a 31-year-old who says he is a recovering heroin addict, attended all six sermons on a recent Sunday, for a total of 12 hours. He has even styled his hair like Lentz's.

"It's unconventional but we're not a conventional city," Dagrossa said. "This isn't the Bible Belt. This is New York."

Meredith Anderson, a 27-year-old church member who also works as an assistant to Lentz, said she "went from being a drug addict party animal to becoming a Christian living a full, healthy life."

"If it was a church that was all buttoned up, you know, what everybody thinks about when they think about church ... that's not necessarily something that would speak to me," she said. "But because it's young people, because there are young people there, I feel more comfortable."

The church is a branch of the popular Australian-based Hillsong Church, the Pentecostal church that draws more than 21,000 weekly to its services. Hillsong is best known for its concert-type settings where they play Christian rock and praise music, which often appeals to a younger demographic of churchgoers.

Much of Hillsong NYC's success can be attributed to its unorthodox leader. Lentz is a hyperactive, self-proclaimed insomniac who would rather stand than sit. His gift for gab lends itself to creating hype for the church. He loves hip-hop music and often calls getting the word of God out "a hustle."

At one service, he broke out Coolio lyrics. At another, he called the biblical Saul the "LeBron James of Judaism." He is an avid basketball fan and player, and is a fixture at New York Knicks games.

Lentz has established himself as his own brand. He has more than 67,000 followers on Twitter and 59,000 on Instagram, where you can find pictures of him standing next to Jay-Z and NBA star Kevin Durant. Justin Bieber posted a picture of himself eating lunch with Lentz, "talking 'bout our savior Jesus Christ."

Hillsong is far from the first church to attempt to win over a young demographic, but few have been able to pull it off as successfully as Hillsong, according to Carnes.

Still, Hillsong is just as susceptible to the downfalls of any modern progressive church, and there is always the danger that the trendy concert culture could overshadow the message, Carnes said.

"This church is always only about Jesus. ... It's always, it's only about Jesus." Lentz said in a recent sermon.

Lentz declined to discuss same-sex marriage, a polarizing issue that young evangelicals have said in repeated surveys that they do not want to be a focus of church. Many evangelical pastors starting churches in New York avoid addressing the topic from the pulpit, a decision that has drawn criticism from evangelical leaders who consider the issue one of the most important for traditional Bible-believers.

Lentz said he enjoys having critics.

"They give me fuel for the fire," he said.

Foursquare Now Has Post Check-in Ads - Business Insider

In April, a leaked Foursquare pitch deck revealed how the local exploring app planned to make money through new ad units this summer.

Today, one of those units launched.

Foursquare now enables advertisers to target users based on relevant check-ins. Specifically, it is selling post check-in ad units on a Cost Per Action basis.

An action is either when someone clicks the ad for more information or checks into the advertiser's location within 72 hours.?

Captain Morgan is one of the first brands to test the new Foursquare ads, Ad Age reports. The hope is users will check-in before they order at bars and be persuaded by a Captain-based drink. Captain Morgan ads will only show when a user is at a bar, club or restaurant and they're displayed in a timely manner.

Other brands are using post-checkin ads to lure nearby Foursquare users into their stores. If you check-in at a restaurant near Toys R Us, for example, you may get hit with a 20% off ad for the retailer.

Foursquare has tried a number of less obvious, "native" ad solutions. So far they haven't been enough to sustain the company. Last summer Foursquare hired?its first VP of Sales, Rob Wilk and Chief Revenue Officer,?Steven?Rosenblatt. Shortly after it launched Promoted Updates, ads that show up at the top of Explore searches.?

For a refresher on Foursquare's monetization strategy, the leaked pitch deck Valleywag dug up is below.

Washington group ranks LePage No. 2 in list of worst governors

LEWISTON ? Maine's Republican Gov. Paul LePage was ranked among the 18 worst governors in the United States on Wednesday by a Washington, D.C.-based government watchdog group.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington listed LePage as having the second worst record based on a list of criteria that included corruption, transparency, partisan politics, pressuring public officials, cronyism, self-enrichment, scandal and mismanagement.

LePage was denoted as a "ringmaster," along with five others, while six others were dubbed "clowns" and six "sideshows" ?in the ranking.

Ranked in the top spot was Georgia's Republican Gov. Nathan Deal. Sixteen of the governors on the list are Republicans; two, Democrats.

Based on media reports, financial disclosure reports, campaign finance reports and property records, the 102-page document details the most controversial decisions and statements made by LePage and the other 17 designated governors.

LePage was placed in the number two spot based on, "the pervasiveness and influence of lobbyists in his administration; personnel problems and retaliation against state employees; improperly bullying state Department of Labor employees; nepotism; reducing government transparency; repeatedly making rude, inappropriate and offensive comments and advocating for new voter identification restrictions."

The report dings LePage for hiring his daughter Lauren as an assistant to the chief of staff for his administration, paying her $40,455 year. The report also notes his administration hired Jody Ledoux, LePage's brother-in-law, to a $68,577 a year job with the state's planning office in 2012.

It notes LePage's comments earlier this year when he criticized state Sen. Troy Jackson, D-Allagash,?using a vulgar metaphor.?

"When one reads the report and looks at the type of conduct we are talking about, I think a lot of the conduct is indefensible," said Melanie Sloan, the executive director of CREW. "It's outrageous conduct."

Sloan said her organization is a non-partisan group that focuses on ethics issues. The report is only the second they've issued on governors, she said.

She also noted that while some may criticize them for being driven by a liberal agenda, the report includes Democrats like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

She said there are also a large number of Republican governors who were not identified as being among the worst in the U.S.

LePage was out of the state in Pennsylvania on Wednesday attending ceremonies commemorating Maine's involvement in the Civil War battle of Little Round Top.

Brent Littlefield, a political consultant to LePage, dismissed the report as an attempt to target Republican governor's that are in high-profile reelection campaigns.

"There's no report, they are using hyperbole from public accusations," Littlefield said. "It's accusations on top of accusations from a partisan, ultra-liberal extremist group, trying to make false claims so they can be used by Eliot Cutler and Mike Michaud next year."

Meanwhile, Maine Democratic Party Chairman Ben Grant, wasted no time in seizing on the report.

?Once again, Governor Paul LePage is getting national attention for all the wrong reasons," Grant said in a prepared statement. ?"What we need is a governor who is a champion of job creation and who will always put Maine people first. Instead we have Paul LePage, now objectively one of America?s worst governors, who continually puts the interests of corporate lobbyists and his own party ahead of the interests of Mainers.?

Former Obama advisor Van Jones: Racism won | The Daily Caller

Former Obama adviser Van Jones declared that ?racism won? in the trial of George Zimmerman.

?The verdict: racism won. #TrayvonMartin? Jones tweeted in the aftermath of the ?not guilty? verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial.

Jones was appointed to Obama?s cabinet in March 2009 as special advisor for green jobs, a newly created position. He is known as the co-founder of the nonprofit progressive advocacy groups Color of Change, which focuses on civil rights, and Green for All, which focuses on the environment.

Colorofchange.org executive director Rashad Robinson released a statement calling the Zimmerman verdict ?another tragedy for black families everywhere.?

?A court in Florida today found George Zimmerman not guilty of second degree murder for shooting and killing unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin in February 2012. This is another tragedy for Black families everywhere, and another instance of how law enforcement and our criminal justice system routinely fail Black people and communities. Were it not for Trayvon?s family and countless supporters taking action, Zimmerman would have never faced a single question about his actions at all. Tonight, as George Zimmerman walks away without penalty, the verdict sends a clear message about the minimal value placed on the lives of young Black men and boys everywhere,? Robinson wrote.

?By amplifying unfounded claims about Trayvon, news media magnified the very same racial stereotypes and false perceptions that put Trayvon?s life in danger in the first place, while ignoring his family?s rightful pleas for justice. Numerous outlets have been passing along unfounded, baseless conjecture as evidence, and reviving deep-seated stereotypes to validate Zimmerman?s defense. This type of newscasting portrays Black teenagers as inherently threatening and violence-prone, but it?s actually the unfair and dehumanizing portrayals in the mass news media that are proven to be life threatening to Black men and boys. We already know that inaccurate media portrayals lead to warped biases against Black people, which lead to negative attitudes and aggressive, harmful treatment by judges, juries, police and others vigilantes wielding dangerous preconceptions like George Zimmerman,? Robinson added.

Nokia Shepherds Path, Vine, Flipboard, Oggl to Windows Phone

The 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 smartphone was the star of Nokia's "Zoom Reinvented" event in New York on Thursday, but there was also some good news on the Windows Phone app front.

Alongside the Lumia 1020, a number of popular apps are making their way onto the Windows Phone platform, including the social network Path, Twitter's video-sharing app Vine, and the social news service Flipboard, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced.

In a blog post, the Path team said it worked closely with Nokia to build its app (pictured left) for Windows Phone, and specifically designed it to take advantage of the Lumia 1020's advanced camera features.

"This is a platform that we are especially excited to build on because it has been one of the most requested platforms by our users from all corners of the globe," Path said. "The Lumia 1020's 41-megapixel camera will allow users to "post photo moments that are even more vibrant than ever before."

Path does not yet have a specific Windows Phone release date, but urged users to "stay tuned." Windows Phone launch dates for Vine and Flipboard also were not announced.

One app that will be pre-loaded on the Lumia 1020, however, is a pro version of Hipstamatic's Oggl app, which launched on iPhone in May. Hipstamatic said it collaborated with Nokia's hardware team to build "an experience that uses our beautifully crafted filters alongside the device's incredible capabilities."

Oggl PRO will give mobile photographers the ability to make a variety of manual adjustments for better control over their shot, Hipstamatic said. Users will be able to reframe their image using the 3x zoom feature; set manual exposure and tap to focus; as well as control white balance, ISO, and shutter speed.

"The Nokia Lumia 1020 is the first time a hardware manufacturer has built a smartphone to be camera-first, and having the opportunity to build our software alongside this talented hardware team is exciting," Hipstamatic CEO Lucas Buick, said in a statement.

The Lumia 1020 will be available exclusively on AT&T starting on July 26 for $299.99 with a two-year contract. Pre-orders begin on July 16 via AT&T's website.

For more, see PCMag's hands on with the Lumia 1020 and the slideshow above.

    More from Derek Lawrenson...

?Like so many young players, I was just trying too hard,? he said.

?I changed a few things, thought I?d be playing better a lot quicker than it turned out and then I lost confidence.?

Enter the Donald brothers. First Christian, who took over caddying duties in January.

He knew who Lewis should seek out with regard to some short-game weaknesses and so it was that Tom flew to Florida to spend time with the man who might be the best in the world in that department.

?It was very good of Luke and we?ve played a few practice rounds since, which really helped,? said Lewis.

Luke?s verdict? ?The talent was clearly there but he wasn?t taking advantage on or around the greens and then he?d lose momentum if he hit a few loose ones because his short game wasn?t sharp enough,? he said.

?We looked at the fundamentals and addressed those. It was also important he stopped being so hard on himself.??

They are lessons on life and golf that the personable Lewis has absorbed and you can?t help but notice the difference.

?It was about a month ago that I really took on board what Luke was saying about chilling out, that it wasn?t life and death,? he said. ?And I can see small signs my game is turning around.

?It will be unfortunate if I don?t make it to The Open (he has to win the Scottish Open this week to qualify).

'Muirfield is one of my favourite courses but there will be opportunities in the future.

?I also have a fight on to keep my card but even if you don?t see me for 12 months I will be back and good things will happen if I stay patient.?

Timing now crucial for Scottish Open

Has the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open lost its identity, as Graeme McDowell claims?

Or was Paul Lawrie right to lambast his Ryder Cup colleague and jump to the defence of his national Open, which takes place in its pre-Open slot at Castle Stuart this week?

You can see why Lawrie would take offence.

On paper, the comment looks damning. But, sitting in the room when he aired his views, it was clear G-Mac meant it as constructive criticism.

Scottish Open debate: Graeme McDowell, left, and Paul Lawrie disagree on the tournament's standing

His point was: the event has slipped from its previous position of high-standing, how do we make it great again?

Only three of Europe?s 12 Ryder Cup heroes will be in attendance and thank goodness Open champion Ernie Els firmed up his commitment last week, otherwise the only ?glamour? player would be the loyal American, Phil Mickelson.

It?s hard to see how the event can regain its lustre if it stays in this slot, for the event is principally a victim of the fact big names would rather conserve energy by not playing the week before The Open.

    QUOTE OF THE WEEK

?To qualify to play at Augusta and everywhere else is just amazing. Your year can change in one day.?

That will be the little-known Swede Jonas Blixt, whose victory in the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday not only got him into the Masters next year but The Open next week.

Secretary of State's wife hospitalized in Mass.

BOSTON (AP) ? Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, is in critical but stable condition in a hospital in Nantucket, Mass.

Heinz Kerry, 74, was admitted into the emergency room at Nantucket Cottage Hospital after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, hospital spokesman Noah Brown said

Heinz Kerry arrived at the facility in critical condition, and remained that way early Sunday evening, although doctors had stabilized her, Brown said.

Brown said he could not immediately release any more details about the patient's condition or her illness.

Nantucket Police Lt. Jerry Adams said a call requesting medical aid was received just after 3:30 p.m. for a home on Hulbert Avenue, and an ambulance was dispatched. Online records show the property is connected to Heinz Kerry's family.

Heinz Kerry is the widow of former U.S. Senator John Heinz, heir to the Heinz ketchup fortune. She married John Kerry in 1995.

Doctors treated her for breast cancer in December 2009.

She previously has said she found in late September that year that she had cancer in her left breast after having her annual mammogram.

A month later, she underwent lumpectomies on both breasts at a Washington hospital after doctors also discovered what they thought was a benign growth on her right breast.

That diagnosis was initially confirmed in postoperative pathology, but two other doctors later found it to be malignant.

In November 2009, Heinz Kerry had another pair of lumpectomies performed at Massachusetts General Hospital.

John Kerry has been at the Nantucket home since returning from nearly two-week around-the-world diplomatic trip to the Mideast and Southeast Asia in the pre-dawn hours of July 3.

Before his wife's medical problem, he had planned to return to Washington on Monday and then co-host with Treasury Secretary Jack Lew high-level strategic and economic talks with senior Chinese officials on Wednesday and Thursday.

Kerry had also spoken of his desire to make his sixth trip to Israel as secretary starting at the end of the week. State Department officials said Kerry's schedule is now influx pending developments with his wife's health.

(AP) ? A federal judge in New York has upheld an arbitrator's ruling that a Pennsylvania beauty queen must pay the Miss USA pageant $5 million for defaming Donald Trump's pageant organization.

Sheena Monnin resigned as Miss Pennsylvania last year, saying the Miss USA contest was rigged. She claimed another contestant learned the names of the top five finishers hours before the show was broadcast. Monnin said she decided to turn in her crown as soon as those same contestants were named during the show.

She posted a series of messages on Facebook and spoke publicly about her claims. Trump's Miss Universe Organization sued Monnin for defamation and an arbitrator ruled against her in December. The arbitrator said Monnin's allegations cost the pageant a $5 million fee from a potential 2013 sponsor.

Earlier this week, U.S. District Court Judge J. Paul Oetken upheld the arbitrator's decision. Monnin had sought to have it overturned based on three grounds: the arbitrator overstepped his authority, his decision disregarded law, and she didn't know the arbitration hearing was taking place. The judge disagreed.

Monnin, of Cranberry, Pa., said in a Facebook post Thursday evening that she is glad the truth is out there, regardless of the outcome.

"This is not about me being a 'sore loser' or wanting my '15 minutes of fame'" she wrote. "This is about the MUO's admission under oath that they manipulate the judges' results to suit their own ends. This is not what they advertise to the public."

Pageant organizers claimed Monnin resigned because she disagreed with a decision to allow transgender contestants. They made public text from an email they said Monnin sent citing the decision to allow natural-born males into the competition as the reason for her resignation. A transgender contestant was initially denied entry to the Miss Universe Canada pageant because she wasn't born female, but Trump overruled that decision.

Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island won the Miss USA pageant that year.

Monnin wrote on Facebook page that her legal fees amount to more than $50,000 and she needed financial support, including a link for donations.

Trump's lawyer said he applauded the judge's decision but was surprised Monnin stood by her story.

"I'm shocked to see that she has yet to learn her lesson. I thought she would be smarter the second time around," attorney Michael Cohen said.

NY Mayor's Race Features Cast of Celebrities

NEW YORK -- One makes a video with Steve Buscemi and rockers Vampire Weekend. Another gets shout-outs from Whoopi Goldberg and Brooke Shields. A third hobnobs over cocktails with an actor from "The Sopranos."

No, it's not an awards show weekend. It's the New York City mayor's race, featuring a cast of celebrities like few other municipal elections.

Last weekend, Democratic mayoral contender Christine Quinn unfurled a star-dusted list of pro-gay-rights backers of her bid to become the city's first female and first openly gay mayor. Among them: singer Lance Bass, actor Neil Patrick Harris, director Rob Reiner and "Project Runway" style czar Tim Gunn, who said Quinn would "make the position of mayor the bully pulpit it needs to be to fight for all New Yorkers. "

Ten days earlier, Alec Baldwin announced that he'd raffle off two dinner invites to any-amount donors to Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio.

"There are few things I enjoy more than a good meal with good company, particularly when an issue as urgent as the New York City mayoral election is up for discussion," the "30 Rock" actor told de Blasio supporters in an email, saying the candidate "understands the inequality crisis facing our city."

And in May, a fundraiser for Republican hopeful Joe Lhota spotlighted as "special guest" Steve Schirripa, best known as gentle-spirited goodfella Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri on "The Sopranos."

With the super-competitive campaign to lead the nation's biggest city in high gear since spring, the day-to-day menu of candidate forums, policy speeches and endorsements from political figures and interest groups has increasingly been sprinkled with a healthy dash of glitz.

One day, it's a video from hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons praising de Blasio, now the city public advocate. Another day, it's Goldberg posting on her Facebook page to cheerlead for City Council Speaker Quinn, who also counts Shields as a backer. Or salsa star Willie Colon tweeting a link to a song he wrote lauding Democratic contender Bill Thompson, a former city comptroller.

Indeed, the race can sometimes seem like something of a ballot-box version of "Battle of the Network Stars." De Blasio's "LGBT for BdB" gala is headlined by Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City" fame and Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming. The "LGBT for Quinn" team features actor-playwright Harvey Fierstein and actors Cheyenne Jackson and George Takei, along with Bass, Harris, Reiner and Gunn.

Republican candidate George McDonald, meanwhile, has links to actor Ethan Hawke, a longtime supporter of the Doe Fund, the homelessness-services nonprofit McDonald runs. GOP rival John Catsimatidis has been cultivating a theatrical tie of his own - the billionaire businessman has been underwriting performances of "The Little Flower," actor Tony Lo Bianco's one-man show about former New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.

Entertainers, athletes and other pop culture icons have lent star power to national politics since at least 1920, when singer and comedian Al Jolson wrote a campaign song for Republican nominee Warren Harding and ushered dozens of theater performers to a rally at Harding's Ohio home. Later, show business would pave the path for several stars to win office themselves, most prominently President Ronald Reagan.

In places where voter rolls are stuffed with boldface names, candidates can almost feel pressed to get celebs on their side, says former New York mayoral candidate Tom Allon, a newspaper publisher who dropped his campaign in March. He doesn't think stars' political opinions carry much weight with New Yorkers, but if he'd kept running and could tap some famous endorsers, "I'm sure I would have tried," he said.

While celebrities' imprimatur may not sway voters, stars can help campaigns more indirectly, political observers say.

"The crude notion that celebrities are persuasive, most of the time, for how people vote is just wrong. But I think celebrities are very important in certain situations: fundraising, attracting crowds and interest where it otherwise might not exist," says North Carolina State University political science professor Michael Cobb, who has researched whether celebrity endorsements affect voters.

A star might get more people to a rally or fundraiser, generate press coverage or write checks and round up wealthy friends to do likewise. Several celebrities are bringing their pocketbooks to bear on the New York mayoral campaign, including Quinn donors Tom Hanks and Jon Bon Jovi and de Blasio contributors Paul Simon and John Turturro.

And a celebrated backer can contribute to voters' view of a candidate, especially if the star's known for political activism.

Baldwin, for example, is so outspoken about city matters that he flirted with a mayoral run himself. Buscemi, a former city firefighter, got arrested alongside de Blasio in 2003 while protesting plans to close a firehouse - and in April appeared in a video with Vampire Weekend in which the candidate professes his love for the band and jokingly agrees they could write an official song for the city in return for their votes.

Such supporters "may be famous, but they are also progressive New Yorkers and passionate activists who care deeply about the future of our city and believe we need real change" after Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 12 years, de Blasio said in a statement. His campaign's famous friends also include Susan Sarandon.

Campaigns can run the risk that celebrity supporters will distract from their message instead of amplifying it. Just ask Mitt Romney about Clint Eastwood's Republican National Convention speech to an empty chair or query President Barack Obama about Robert de Niro's crack about some GOP candidates' wives at a fundraiser earlier in 2012.

De Blasio faced questions last week after Baldwin lashed out at a British journalist with a vulgar Twitter tirade using an anti-gay term. Baldwin apologized in a statement to the gay rights group GLAAD, and a de Blasio spokesman called the actor's language "clearly unacceptable."

And Quinn was on the spot when illustrious feminist Gloria Steinem publicly threatened to forsake Quinn's mayoral campaign if Quinn kept preventing the council from voting on requiring many businesses to provide paid sick time. Quinn ultimately backed the proposal, and Steinem endorsed her.

Some candidates say their campaigns aren't courting stars. Average New Yorkers' votes "are way more valuable than the endorsement of the `Sex and the City' cast," said Todd Brogan, a spokesman for Democratic contender Sal Albanese, a former city councilman.

Another candidate is well-known enough in his own right, for good or ill: Anthony Weiner, the Democratic former congressman felled by smutty tweets. Weiner hasn't announced any endorsements since he jumped into the race roughly six weeks ago.

Campaigns that are embracing luminaries say they're keeping fame in perspective.

"We're always so appreciative to have them," said Jessica Proud, a spokeswoman for Lhota, an ex-Metropolitan Transportation Authority boss. But ultimately, Proud said, "people want to know what you're going to do with them in office."

"You're not running for `American Idol,'" she added. "You're running for mayor."

    • Social media give quick clue that most passengers survived
    • Chinese students flying abroad for international studies a growing global presence

The crash-landing of Asiana flight 214 at San Francisco-Oakland International Airport Saturday sparked a desperate wait for news for relatives of passengers in China, where the flight originated in Shanghai.

Chinese diplomats said the 141 Chinese citizens on board included a teacher and 34 high school students, state news agency Xinhua reported.

FULL COVERAGE: The crash of Asiana 214

Chinese students flying abroad have become an increasingly common global phenomenon in recent years as the nation's dramatic economic growth and opening up creates more families that have the means to send children overseas to study -- and at ever younger ages.

One of the first indications those high school students had survived the crash came from Chinese social media as a fellow survivor posted updates from the scene. Xu Da, an executive with the online giant Taobao, based in its home city of Hangzhou, wrote a series of posts, sent from his iPhone, on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo micro-blogging service.

"It took half an hour from landing to evacuation," he wrote. "The passengers and rescuers were both very calm. No one was shouting, everything was orderly, and I felt we had already been evacuated for a while when the fire grew larger, so I was extremely surprised to hear that two were dead," he wrote.

Many Weibo users posted online messages expressing hopes for the safety of passengers.

Chat show host Parkinson admits he has cancer

Chat show host Sir Michael Parkinson has revealed he has cancer.

The television presenter (78) is currently undergoing radiotherapy for prostate cancer but said he confident of fighting the disease and returning to full health.

In an interview, Sir Michael said: ?It was a great shock, but I have been told to expect to make a full recovery.?

Sir Michael, affectionately known as ?Parky? to his legion of fans, was diagnosed with the disease in May after a routine health check. Doctors immediately began organising his treatment, which involves five sessions of radiotherapy a week.

The renowned journalist and interviewer said he was left in shock by the diagnosis, but said he was ?in wonder? at the ?marvelous? work of medical staff after initial thoughts of his own mortality. He said: ?I had to start calling a few of my social engagements to tell them I couldn?t do it - what do you say to them? ?When you are told you have something like cancer, it is a shock.

?But the cancer specialist said: ?I will assure you, you will not die of this.? ?I am concerned about it, of course, but I am not frightened of it.?

Sir Michael said he continues to live ?a normal life?, aside from the ?distraction? of the radiotherapy. The chat show king described his treatment as ?extraordinary?, and said he found the process free from pain and discomfort.

He said: ?If anything, it?s boring. ?You have to lie there completely still, for six minutes. ?But I have had no side-effects at all.? Sir Michael said the cancer is contained to his prostate, and that he should be ?completely free? of the disease by August.

And he urged men to pay greater attention to their health in order to catch potential diseases early - with a simple test to check for prostate cancer.

?The test is if you can pee against a wall from 2ft, you haven?t got it,? he said. ?I don?t want to trivialise it, but men know when there?s a problem. ?I have been lucky, but men are silly about their health. ?Get it checked out - it might be something else.? Sir Michael?s career has seen him welcome the likes of Muhammad Ali, David Beckham and Rod Hull with puppet Emu - onto his chat shows during a long and distinguished career. And he said he had no intention of letting cancer get in the way.

?I?m 78 and I have had a good life,? he said. ?When you get involved in this, you begin to understand the extraordinary work of those involved in treating cancer.

?You just sit and look at them in wonder. They do the most extraordinary things, and I am very grateful. ?I shall be around for a while yet, to the delight of my friends and the dismay of my enemies.?
