US Adults Are Getting Sicker

More than one in five middle-aged U.S. adults, and nearly half of adults over age 65, have more than one chronic health condition, such as hypertension and diabetes, according to a new government report.

The report said that in 2010, 21.3 percent of women and 20.1 percent of men between ages 45 and 64 had at least two chronic health conditions. In 2000, the rate among men was 15.2 percent, and among women it was 16.9 percent.

Increases were also seen in adults older than 65, with 49 percent of men and 42.5 percent of women reporting in 2010 that they had at least two chronic health conditions. In 2000, the rates were 39.2 percent of men and 35.8 percent of women.

Treatment for people with multiple chronic conditions is complex, the researchers said. By looking at trends in the rates of people with more than one condition, researchers are better able to make decisions about managing and preventing these diseases, and they can make better predictions about future health-care needs, they said.

The increases were due mainly to rises in three conditions: hypertension, diabetes and cancer, according to the report. These increases may be due to more new cases, or due to people living longer with the conditions because of advances in medical treatments.

The report also said that middle-aged adults with at least two chronic conditions had increasing difficulty, between 2000 and 2010, in getting the care and prescription drugs they needed because of cost. In 2010, 23 percent reported not receiving or delaying the medical care they needed, and 22 percent said they didn't get the prescriptions they needed. In 2000, these rates were 17 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

The CDC does not consider obesity itself to be a health condition; rather, it is a risk factor for other conditions, such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. The obesity rate in the U.S. increased in the United States over the past 30 years, but has leveled off in recent years, the report said.

The report is based on data gathered during the National Health Interview Survey, in which participants complete a detailed questionnaire about their health status and health-related behaviors. Participants reported whether a physician has diagnosed them with any of nine chronic health conditions: hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, current asthma and kidney disease.

Pass it on: An increasing number of middle-aged and older adults report having more than one chronic health condition.

Gmail for iOS adds option to save photos, becomes a smoother operator

Gmail for iOSGoogle's Gmail app for iOS has been docked by some potential adopters for feeling like a poor cousin to other native apps. It may be worth revisiting: the 1.3 update has just arrived with a much-requested ability to save common image attachments to an iOS device's photo collection. Should that not be enough, Google has smoothed out animations and scrolling for iPhone and iPod touch owners. The new version has pushed live for everyone, leaving just a quick download between us and saving our parents' vacation photos for posterity.

Religion Department | Sarah Hinshelwood ? Bangalore, India

Sarah Hinshelwood

This summer I have traveled to Bangalore, India on a research grant from WFU to volunteer and conduct research within the Sheila Kothavala Institute for the Deaf, a school for deaf children from kindergarten to 10th standard. I mainly helped with the younger students and taught them their ABCs in sign language and helped them learn new words and how to count. I also got to help with the older students as they train for a volleyball competition. Besides helping the students, I often helped create new teaching materials for the teachers. As for my research, I interviewed teachers about their experience teaching in the school and interviewed students about how the school has helped them become independent individuals capable of navigating through life and society, especially since many come from homes where the student has no way of communicating with their parents. More importantly, I have tried to learn more about their thoughts and feelings about their own hearing impairment. It has certainly been an amazing experience to learn from and work with these amazing children and see life from their perspective.

Besides my work in the school, I have been enjoying exploring Bangalore and living with several other international volunteers. I?ve experienced some unforgettable cultural events, such as the Hindu wedding of one of the teachers from my school, and have seen some amazing sights, such as Hindu temples and Muslim mosques, historic palaces, Indian gardens, and the markets of Bangalore. I?ve eaten some amazing Indian food and learned how to deal with the sometimes very irritating rickshaw drivers! Outside of Bangalore, I?ve explored a dancing village and am preparing to travel to Mysore, a city famous for its temples and palaces, and I will travel to Hampi as well. Overall, it?s been an awesome experience and such a wonderful learning opportunity.

How to optimise Your Health Without Drugs

If you adhere to a healthy lifestyle, you most likely will never need medications in the first place.

This includes:

Proper Food Choices
For a comprehensive guide on which foods to eat and which to avoid, see my nutrition plan. Generally speaking, you should be looking to focus your diet on whole, unprocessed foods (vegetables, meats, raw dairy, nuts, and so forth) that come from healthy, sustainable, local sources, such as a small organic farm not far from your home.

For the best nutrition and health benefits, you will want to eat a good portion of your food raw, and make sure you're sourcing your meats and animal products from organically-raised, grass-fed or pastured animals.

Nearly as important as knowing which foods to eat more of is knowing which foods to avoid, and topping the list is fructose. Sugar, and fructose in particular, acts as a toxin in and of itself, and as such drive multiple disease processes in your body, not the least of which is insulin resistance, a major cause of accelerated aging.

Comprehensive Exercise Program, including High-Intensity Exercise like Peak Fitness
Even if you're eating the healthiest diet in the world, you still need to exercise to reach the highest levels of health, and you need to be exercising effectively, which means including not only core-strengthening exercises, strength training, and stretching but also high-intensity activities into your rotation. High-intensity interval-type training boosts human growth hormone (HGH) production, which is essential for optimal health, strength and vigor. I've discussed the importance of Peak Fitness for your health on numerous occasions, so for more information, please review this previous article.

Stress Reduction and Positive Thinking
You cannot be optimally healthy if you avoid addressing the emotional component of your health and longevity, as your emotional state plays a role in nearly every physical disease -- from heart disease and depression, to arthritis and cancer. Effective coping mechanisms are a major longevity-promoting factor in part because stress has a direct impact on inflammation, which in turn underlies many of the chronic diseases that kill people prematurely every day. Energy psychology tools such as the Emotional Freedom Technique, meditation, prayer, social support and exercise are all viable options that can help you maintain emotional and mental equilibrium.

Proper Sun Exposure to Optimize Vitamin D
We have long known that it is best to get your vitamin D from sun exposure, and if at all possible, I strongly urge you to make sure you're getting out in the sun on a daily basis. There is preliminary evidence suggesting that oral vitamin D may not provide the identical benefits, although it's still better than none at all. To determine the times of year that you can optimize your vitamin D levels through sun exposure, please see this previous article.

Take High Quality Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats
Animal-based omega-3 found in krill oil helps fight and prevent heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer's, arthritis, diabetes, hyperactivity and many other diseases.

Avoid as Many Chemicals, Toxins, and Pollutants as Possible
This includes tossing out your toxic household cleaners, soaps, personal hygiene products, air fresheners, bug sprays, lawn pesticides, and insecticides, just to name a few, and replacing them with non-toxic alternatives.

One great reason to have ONE marriage vs. serial relationships - less

It seems like relationships = drama, or at least a lot of them are that way.

I don't remember so much drama from when I was dating, but I also wasn't sleeping with the guys I was dating, and I think that adds to it. When women sleep with men, emotional attachments occur and that can lead to more drama if the guy isn't committed, or she's insecure, etc. Living together probably makes the drama worse because you can't go to your own corners and cool down.

One of the nice things about being married once, vs. living together with one guy after another (with or without the ring) - less drama.

My husband and I had most of our drama the first two years of our marriage. Now, we've worked out the kinks, we know each other, and there just isn't a lot of drama. We've reached detente. That means we have more energy for doing other things - so we waste less time.

I think it's just more productive for society as a whole and less wear and tear for individuals if they aren't having serial relationships. What do you think?

Of course, the problem also becomes - how do you find the right person to have the ONE relationship with... ;)

PFT: Harbaugh's act growing a bit thin?

Jim HarbaughAP

You can?t argue that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has the back of his players.

You also can?t argue that people are snickering behind the back of the second-year coach after yet another rambling diatribe.

After having previously declared Alex Smith the smartest quarterback he?s ever seen, Michael Crabtree the owner of the best hands ever, and denying the 49ers ever had interest in Peyton Manning (and you?re diabolical if you think so), it?s becoming easy to tune him out when he gets into this mode.

But the latest player to benefit from Harbaugh?s unsolicited defense is first-round pick A.J. Jenkins, who some have already declared a disappointment.

In what Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com described as an ?unscheduled trip to the podium,? Harbaugh ripped the critics who ripped his rookie receiver.

?A.J Jenkins was an outstanding football player when he got here,? Harbaugh said. ?His progress has been very, very good, and exceeded expectations.

?For those ? the scribes, pundits, so-called experts ? who have gone so far as to say that he?s going to be a bust, should just stop. I recommend that because they?re making themselves look more clueless than they already did.

?I?ll go on record: A.J. is going to be an outstanding football player. So far in camp and what he?s done in the offseason has led us to believe nothing but he?ll be an outstanding football player in the National Football League.?

Harbaugh went onto say: ?And, yeah, I?m going to keep track of some of these names of so-called experts who were making these comments. And there?s going to be an ?I told you so.? I foresee that happening.?

Listen Jim, we get it. You?re there to shield your players, to make them feel loved. To make sure that if the world doesn?t believe in them, you do. And of course it?s too soon to declare a rookie a bust.

But this protest-too-much act is growing old, fast.

The Jenkins defense, like the Manning denial, was unprompted, which does nothing but make the coach look thin-skinned and reactionary, and worried too much about the voices outside his building.

As long as they win, it?ll be fine. But the moment things slow down, who knows who Harbaugh?s going to choose to lash out at.

Apple, Samsung set for blockbuster US patent trial

AFP - Apple and Samsung are set to square off in a California court Monday in what is seen as the biggest patent US trial in recent memory.

Apple is seeking more than $2.5 billion in a case accusing the South Korean firm of copying designs and other patents from the iPhone and iPad maker in the trial in San Jose, California, federal court.

Samsung however alleges that Apple infringed on some of its patents for mobile phones, and the case will sort out the competing claims.

It is one of several cases in courts around the world involving the two big electronics giants in the hottest part of the tech sector, tablet computers and smartphones.

While the results so far have been mixed in courts in Europe and Australia, Samsung is clearly on the defensive in the US case.

US District Judge Lucy Koh, who will preside in the jury trial barring any last-minute settlement, has issued temporary injunctions against US sales of Samsung's 10-inch Galaxy tablet and the Galaxy Nexus smartphone developed with Google.

To make matters worse, a magistrate in the case ruled Monday that Samsung failed to retain key evidence in the case by allowing emails to be destroyed after learning of the lawsuit.

That will mean Judge Koh can issue an "adverse inference" instruction to the jury.

"It's never good when the judge decides you've withheld or destroyed evidence," said R. Polk Wagner, a professor of patent law at the University of Pennsylvania.

Florian Mueller, a consultant who blogs on patent issues in the tech sector said the decision "must be a nightmare" for Samsung as it seeks to establish credibility with the jury.

A patent attorney in Washington DC who asked to remain anonymous because of client links, said the ruling could be "a killer" for Samsung.

"Whether it was relevant or not, the fact that evidence was destroyed will be taken into consideration," he said.

Additionally, the attorney said Apple could benefit from the fact that the case is being heard in Silicon Valley, just down the road from its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

"You like to think there is no home court advantage, but there could be," the lawyer said. "You also have the issue of a foreign company versus an American one."

Wagner said the case is probably the biggest patent trial since the 1980s case involving photo giants Polaroid and Kodak, and is important because of its size and ability to set precedent.

"I see this as the first in what I expect to be many cases involving smartphone technology," he told AFP.

"It remains to be seen what the impact will be even if Apple wins. Typically the patents are relatively easy to design around. So if Samsung loses a couple of rounds they may still be able to make their phones."

But Samsung could face big risks: If Apple wins, it would automatically get a permanent injunction on sales of Samsung devices. And if Samsung makes only minor changes, Apple could ask for the Korean firm to be held in contempt.

The case has huge financial implications for both firms and the burgeoning industry for mobile devices.

A survey by research firm IDC showed Samsung shipped 50.2 million smartphones globally in the April-June period while Apple sold 26 million iPhones. IDC said Samsung held 32.6 percent of the market to 16.9 percent for Apple.

Samsung is the leading maker of smartphones using Google's Android operating system, which has become the most popular platform despite complaints from Apple that it has infringed on its patents.

Apple outlined its case for damages in paperwork filed in advance of the pivotal court battle.

The Apple filing Tuesday said Samsung, in entering the smartphone and tablet markets, "chose to compete by copying Apple."

"Samsung's infringing sales have enabled Samsung to overtake Apple as the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world," the document said.

Apple estimated that its lost profits and Samsung's "unjust enrichment" total in the vicinity of $2.5 billion; a figure that could be ramped up given damages rules for "willful" infringement of patents.

Samsung has steadfastly denied abusing Apple patents and countered in court that Apple has been taking advantage of some of the South Korean company's patented technology for wireless connections.

In May, two days of court-directed peace talks between the chiefs of Apple and Samsung ended with no truce in the legal battle headed for court in San Jose, California.

Apple boss Tim Cook and Samsung chief Choi Gee-Sung met in San Francisco after a judge asked the bosses to personally try to resolve the case.

Author Offerings From Patricia Fry | Writing and Publishing News

Today, I?d like to remind you of what I do and what tangible items I offer authors.

I started out writing for publication in 1973 and discovered how to make a career of writing (I am so blessed). Over the years, because of pressure from other writers, I now focus on helping authors with their book projects.

I do this by offering editing services. I edit articles as well as book manuscripts. I also help with book proposals and query letters. Sometimes just a tweak in a query letter or book proposal or a deeper understanding of their purposes can make a difference between a rejection and an acceptance.

I write a lot of articles designed to inform and educate newbie and struggling authors. My articles appear regularly in Publishing Basics Newsletter, Book Promotion Newsletter, IBPA Independent, Freelance Writers? Report, Book Marketing Matters, SPAWNews and others. I write this daily blog and the SPAWN Market Update. You?ll find many articles and resources posted at my website: http://www.matilijapress.com

I post a free report for download at http://www.patriciafry.com

Currently it is ?50 Ways to Promote Your Ebook.?

I also write books for you. My latest two are:
?Publish Your Book, Proven Strategies and Resources for the Enterprising Author? and
?Promote Your Book, Over 250 Proven, Low-Cost Tips and Techniques for the Enterprising Author.? http://www.matilijapress.com

At this website, you?ll also find a collection of interesting and informative books such as, ?The Successful Author?s Handbook,? ?50 Reasons Why You Should Write That Book,? ?The Successful Writer?s Handbook,? ?The Author?s Toolkit,? ?A Writer?s Guide to Magazine Articles.? And be sure to watch for my upcoming book, ?Talk Up Your Book, How to Sell Your Book Through Public Speaking, Interviews, Signings, Festivals, Conferences and More.?

I visit writers? group meetings and speak on various topics related to publishing and book promotion. You?ll also find me on the schedule at writers? conferences around the country.

In my spare time (chuckle), I run SPAWN, a networking organization and resource center for authors at any stage of their project. http://www.spawn.org

If you have a book in the works, in your mind or actually completed, I have resources for you. Don?t try to go it on your own. While writing is a craft, publishing is a serious business that takes a heads-up, informed approach. And you should begin your education even before you start the writing?at least before you make any publishing decisions. I?ve known more than one author who had to go back to the drawing board and revise their manuscripts once they learned more about the world of publishing.

So, what can I do for you? I can take a look at your query letter or book proposal. Are you ready for an editorial evaluation and free sample edit? If you are new to publishing, the book I would definitely recommend?because I wrote it expressly for you?is ?Publish Your Book, Proven Strategies and Resources for the Enterprising Author.? This is your publishing education in book form.

Do you have a published book that is not doing well in the marketplace? Order my book, ?Promote Your Book, Over 250 Proven, Low-Cost Tips and Techniques for the Enterprising Author.? You?ll learn concepts and perspectives about book promotion that you?ve probably never considered while discovering numerous book promotion tactics that could work well for your particular book.

How To Stay On Top Of Your Home Improvement Needs |

For those that haven?t been exposed to feng shui, a room?s ?energy? can be impacted by re-arranging its furniture. Many people believe that fortune can enter a household when the doorway is kept clear. Read on to learn how to tackle some of those projects around your home.

One way you can improve the exterior appearance of your home is to plant brightly colored flowers. Pick out a range of flowers that will bloom across all the different seasons. Further, trim your hedges and bushes, and try to keep your lawn manicured and mowed. These are simple steps that make a huge difference in your home?s curb appeal.

Be sure that trees and shrubs are not too close to your house. It raises the chance that roots will make their way to the foundation of your home and cracks will develop which can cause leaks. It is best to plant everything father away so you do not have to deal with this later on. You can transplant the tree with the root ball attached as long as it?s small.

When picking contractors, be sure you get several estimates that are each based on the same work requirements. Make a list that you give to each of the contractors of the things you want done. If you keep changing what you want done, you will never be able to figure out which contractor is going to give you the best price.

Always enjoy your home improvement projects. Enlist family and friends to help, and make it a social event. Completing projects in your own home comes with a sense of accomplishment and that is magnified if you can share the task with the people you love.

Homes with an appealing view can sell for much more than like houses on the market. You may have to invest some additional money, but you should look at it as an investment that you can reap the benefits of while you live there. Resale value will ultimately depend on finding the right buyer in the future.

Have all the changes you intend to make mapped out before you start your project. A plan will help you remain on budget and on a designated time scale. You will up your cost and time when you change up in the middle of your project. Your contractors will be pleased if you have made a decision of what you want before they begin.

When contemplating a landscape project, it is essential that you choose a design style that will complement your home. When a garden or patio area matches the style of the rest of your home, then this brings cohesion to the whole property, where clashing styles may look unattractive or unplanned.

As you can see by now, it?s not all that difficult to make improvements to your home. This is considered a type of home improvement, since moving your furniture can provide your home with a new look.

LEBRON'S LEAP

Nothing like an Olympics to boost your social media profile, it seems.

LeBron James has acquired almost 600,000 new Facebook fans in the last week, with Kobe Bryant coming in second in terms of popularity with an extra 78,000.

But Kobe's still the top Olympian on the social media site in terms of overall numbers.

Facebook has released the following overall fan figures:

Kobe - 13.57 million

LeBron - 11.93 million

Roger Federer - 11.23 million

Maria Sharapova - 7.8 million

Usain Bolt - 7.07 million

LONELY SEATS

The rows of empty seats at some Olympic venues have enraged sports fans in London who tried but failed to get Olympic tickets.

And now the seats are putting their side of the story across ? through Twitter, naturally.

An account, (at)Olympic seat, emerged on Sunday evening.

"I feel so empty," read one post, accompanied by an avatar of empty seats.

"It was my lifelong ambition to be an Olympic seat," read another tweet. "To provide rest and comfort for cheering sports fans. I feel like such a failure."

BELLE OF THE BAR

The Americans dominated the afternoon qualifying for women's gymnastics, but Britain's athletes got the loudest cheers.

An ovation greeted Britain's Beth Tweddle, who earned a 16.133 on the uneven bars for the top score of the session.

"I was nervous," she admitted later. "It was nerve-wracking to do the bars last."

Tweddle, at 27, is the oldest member of the team and Britain's most decorated gymnast. She's never won an Olympic medal, however.

Her performance Sunday helped Britain make the team finals, four years after they missed the last slot at the Beijing Games.

"We know we're not going to be able to touch USA, Russia, China," Tweddle said. "We are the level below them. Four years ago, we wouldn't be looking at that, so we are getting better."

IT'S OKAY, ROOMIE

Jordyn Wieber has released a statement of support for close friend Aly Raisman, who bumped her out of the all-around gymnastics finals.

Wieber, the reigning world champion, had to watch Raisman's performance knowing a strong showing would keep her out of the individual competition. She left the arena sobbing after missing the cut.

"It was hard because of course I wanted that spot. But I also wanted Aly to do her best for the team," she said.

The two are roommates here at the London Games. Wieber will be relegated to cheerleader now as Gabby Douglas and Raisman compete for the all-around title.

"It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics," she said. "I'm proud of Aly and Gabby and happy that they reached the all-around and I was able to help the team get to the Finals. It was always going to be close between the three of us doing all-around and in the end it is what it is."

DRENCHED TO THE BONE

Thousands of fans lined the Olympic women's cycling road race course ? all 87 miles (140 kilometers) of it ? despite the pelting rain, standing three or four deep in hopes of simply catching the blur of a cyclist. Police outriders were cheered, since riders usually followed soon after.

The rain would ease up for four or five minutes Sunday, then return with a vengeance. Who knows how the riders could stay upright or even see.

HANDING OUT HUGS

After the first U.S. win, a hug from the first lady.

The U.S. men's basketball team cruised to a 98-71 victory over France in their Olympic opener on Sunday and got quite the reward.

Michelle Obama watched the game, a few rows back. At the final buzzer, the entire team came over for a hug, one by one.

"It was a very special moment," Carmelo Anthony says. "For her to be sitting over there and supporting us, we just wanted to thank her for coming."

PICTURE YOURSELF IN A BOAT ...

They might not pilot a Yellow Submarine, but two British sailors have received a good-luck message from Beatles legend Paul McCartney.

The 70-year-old musician sent a note Sunday to Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, who will compete from Monday in the men's 49er competition ? in which a crew of two sail in a high-performance skiff.

"Wishing you the very best of luck on the Lovely Rita in the games. Happy sailing to you both," McCartney said in his message, referring to their boat.

McCartney, who sang at Friday's opening ceremony, told the two British sailors that he shared their passion, and loved "to potter about" on his small dinghy.

Morrison wrote on his blog that the Beatles were Britain's "greatest-ever band" and said he and his teammate "were looking to emulate" the group's success as they take to the water.

DOUBLE ACT

It's Simon and Esther Manzke's first trip to an Olympic Games and they are trying to stand out from the crowd.

Both are wearing small German carnival-style top hats with a piece of cord connecting them and a dumbbell dangling inbetween. Today they have tickets for weightlifting.

"The hats are multifunctional, we have a net for beach volleyball tonight," said Simon, a student from Hamburg. "We are trying to be creative, we know people in the U.K. love hats."

As the siblings headed off to an arena, some London volunteers ran up to them and asked for a photo. "Crazy German people," one shrieked.

PISTORIUS TRAINS

Out in leafy west London, double-amputee Oscar Pistorius gets to run in relative peace. That will all change pretty soon.

On Sunday, Pistorius ran 200-meter splits alongside teammate Ofentse Mogawane, pounding down a university's tree-lined track on his carbon-fiber blades as a handful of curious staff members and students watched on.

It'll get far busier for the 25-year-old "Blade Runner" from Wednesday, when he makes his first formal media appearance in London ahead of his historic debut Saturday in the 400 heats at the Olympic Stadium. He'll also be on South Africa's 4x400 relay team.

Among those cheering him on: His 90-year-old grandmother who's making the trip over to London from South Africa.

NI HAO, KONICHIWA

There's a sure sign the world's best players are about to take the floor at the table tennis venue: Mandarin and Japanese translators are arriving. Let's hope someone shows up to help with Korean.

The world's two top-ranked women ? Ding Ning and Li Xiaoxia of China ? play Sunday night. No. 3 Kim Kyun-gah of South Korean and No. 4 Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan also play. The top 12 women in the tournament are all from Asia. No. 13 is Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus. Nos. 14 and 15 are China-born players who represent the Netherlands and Poland.

Even Singapore uses two players born in China ? Feng Tianwei and Wang Yuegu.

All IN A DAY'S WORK

What was supposed to be a full day of work for 150 British soldiers has turned into an afternoon watching women's gymnastics.

Staff Sgt. Marc Robson of the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery said he was told Sunday to send the soldiers to the North Greenwich Arena for the qualifications rounds. He said he's rotating soldiers in and out, and those outside the arena are performing their security tasks as planned.

The move came after Olympic organizers were criticized for the number of empty seats seen on television.

Robson said the troops were enjoying themselves.

"I was told to let the boys come in and enjoy the show," Robson said. "Look at them, they seem to be liking it just fine."

? Jenna Fryer ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jennafryer

___

DOES YAO SPEAK FRENCH?

There are so many media who showed up to cover Team USA vs France that organizers eventually closed off the press area and wouldn't allow any more inside the arena.

One media member stood out ? or, more accurately, up ? more than any other. Yao Ming was in attendance as a Chinese broadcaster.

There was talk of making the press tribune standing room only. If they do, pity the guy stuck behind him.

?Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http:/www.twitter.com/APKrawczynski

___

GREAT ATMOSPHERE

It's the closing seconds. The score is 60-56. The crowd is going crazy. Which Olympic final is this, you ask?

Hardly. It's a group stage basketball game between two countries little known for their basketball ? Tunisia and Nigeria.

The 12,000-seat venue is at least 95 percent full and the crowd has been raucous throughout the mid-morning game. As the game ends, the players of both teams are given a standing ovation.

The next game, Australia vs. Brazil, is a similar affair. There is constant clapping and cheering and the noise reverberates around the arena. The public address announcer organizes the fans, though it's not like they need much encouragement; the fans do the wave and stomp and clap to "We will rock you."

If there's one thing London organizers promised, it was passionate fans. At the basketball venue, they're definitely delivering.

Google, Facebook, Amazon.com, and eBay Create the Internet Association

Industry Leaders Magazine

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN), eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) and other big Internet companies are joining forces to start a trade association. The association will be acting as a influential pro-internet lobbying group in the U.S. The group is to launch in September and will be responsible for handling political and regulatory issues as well.

In pursuit of having a voice

According to President Michael Beckerman, a former advisor to the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee, The Internet Association, which is to start in September, will present a unified position of major Internet companies. Although Michael Beckerman did not identify members of the future lobbying group, it was confirmed by some source that the association had been created by Google, Amazon, eBay and Facebook and other Internet companies. However the full list of companies creating and joining the Internet Association would be announced in September, Michael Beckerman said.

Lobbying is one of main concerns of the Internet giants these days. Recently they have been lobbying on matters such as easing visa restrictions to employ overseas engineers, privacy, cyber-security and sales taxes. Google as well as Facebook spend a lot of money on lobbying. The lobbying industry is highly developed and accordingly it is valued at $3.3 billion. In turn, Google is said to have spent $5.4m in the first half of 2012, respectively $650,000 was spent by Facebook.

The Internet Association will have plenty things to do. It is likely that it will have to handle political and regulatory matters, which have been faced by Internet companies and have been source of inaccuracies for the last few years. Those issues include, inter alia, cyber-security and sales tax collection, copyright protection. The new lobbying group will educate lawyers about those newly emerged issues and at the same time represent companies engaged in the project. Michael Beckerman noted: "We want to educate (lawmakers) about the impact of the Internet in their congressional districts." He also added: "In September, we'll do a full rollout and announce companies and announce policy positions."

Free internet

The internet giants want to have their own voice to be heard. The decision to create a new lobbying group, which will specialize in internet-tied issues, is fully understandable and rational. Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. are willing to protect their businesses and want law to be more adjusted to their needs. They want to make it easier to employ foreigners or to simplify the taxes, privacy and cyber-security issues. Moreover they acknowledge that law must not be as controversial as the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act was. This legislation act was critiqued by the industry, mainly because it threatened the freedom of Internet. And freedom in the net is the most important value.
