Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to Divorce; Actress Files For Sole Custody of Suri

Now that's a celebrity breakup we did not see coming today. After more than five years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce.

While many of us were skeptical when they first got together and Tom was proclaiming his love for her on Oprah's couch, the divorce still comes out of left field.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe, confirming the TomKat split Friday.

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Tom, Kat

After a relatively brief courtship, the Rock of Ages star, 49, married the former Dawson's Creek star Holmes, 33, in an Italian castle in 2006.

They have one daughter, six-year-old Suri.

No reason was given for the impending Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes divorce, but the couple has not been seen in public together since February (below).

This was Holmes' first marriage and the third for Cruise, who previously was married to Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two adopted children, and Mimi Rogers.

It is unclear if divorce papers have formally been filed, but Tom and Katie are believed to have a prenuptial agreement, and are worth at least $275 million.

Obviously, Tom's earnings comprise the bulk of that, but Kate will no doubt receive a significant settlement. Here's wishing both the best in this tough time.

UPDATE, 2:11 EDT: Katie filed for divorce in New York on June 28, citing the catch-all "irreconcilable differences." She makes no mention of the prenup.

She is asking for sole legal custody and "primary residential custody" of Suri and for a "suitable amount" of child support, plus a division of property.

According to TMZ, Tom "did not see this coming" and there is some "nastiness" going on here, as evidenced by Katie's move to get sole legal custody.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Photo

UPDATE, 4:00 EDT: Tom is "very sad," according to another source.

Photos show he was seen wearing his wedding ring just two days ago while filming a new movie in Iceland; Katie also wore her ring this week in New York.

Cruise's rep also released a brief statement saying:

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

Fantasy Baseball Edge: National League All-Star Team

By Matthew Schwimmer & Moe Koltun of?Roto Analysis

In the baseball-watching community, people often disparage the All-Star game. There are arguments over whether or not the game should count, complaints about the fact that there needs to be one representative from every team, and, of course, there are always disputes from fan base to fan base about who should start in the game. Today, we?re going to be giving you who we think should be starting in the All-Star game if it was instead a Fantasy Baseball All-Star game?with a slight twist. Rather than just simply picking who has been the best at each position so far this year, we?re going to choose the players who have returned the most value to their fantasy owners relative to where they were ranked in the preseason. That way, we can truly see the players who have been Fantasy All-Stars for their owners. We will finish with the American League next week.

All Rankings Data taken from CBS?s preseason draft kit.

Catcher: Carlos Ruiz, Phillies

Carlos Ruiz is second on the player rater amongst catchers despite being ranked 23rd preseason. Ruiz?s calling card this season has been his .354 average and increased line drive rate, up to 26% from a career average of 20%. While the average may be unsustainable for the rest of the season, fantasy owners are grateful for what they?ve gotten from Ruiz so far and know he?ll benefit from having Chase Utley and Ryan Howard back in the lineup shortly.

Backup: Yadier Molina, Cardinals

First Base: Joey Votto, Reds

Sometimes you can?t always look for value and have to reward greatness. With the departure of Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder, the National League does not have much greatness at first base. Joey Votto is currently 2nd in the majors in batting average (.355), 7th in homers (14), 6th in the RBIs (47) and has more than double the Wins Above Replacement of any other first basemen in the league. The Reds centerpiece for years to come has a swing that should allow him to stay amongst the best hitters in the league for a long time.

Backup: Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks

Second Base: Jose Altuve, Astros

Sometimes great things come in small packages, and owners who risked a late round selection on the 5 foot, 5 inch (that?s generous) Astro have been pleasantly surprised. Altuve has always silenced critics at each level by hitting for a high average and this year is no exception. Along with a .309 average, Altuve has also contributed 5 home runs, 12 steals, and 45 runs. A spot on the all-star team is certainly deserved, as is a spot on all fantasy rosters.

Backup: Aaron Hill

Shortstop: Starlin Castro, Cubs

The Cubs may not have many things going their way this season, but Starlin Castro is certainly one of them. The young shortstop is maintaining an average over .300 while showing some power (6 HR) and speed (16 SB). Castro?s value in OBP leagues does take a huge hit because he walks only 2.2% of the time, worst amongst qualified major leaguers. While the youngster still has room to improve, he?s certainly been a treat for fantasy owners so far this season and has the potential to become an extremely special player in this league.

Backup: Rafael Furcal, Cardinals

Third Base: David Wright, Mets

I guess those preseason worries of David Wright being ?done? were premature, as so far this season he leads the majors in batting average at .358. The new dimensions in Citi Field along with some swing adjustments have allowed Wright to hit 8 homers so far and strike out in only 12.9% of his plate appearances, down form the 21%+ he?s posted his last three seasons. Wright has already been significantly more valuable then any other National League 3B this year, a trend I expect to continue as the year progresses.

Backup: David Freese, Cardinals

Outfield: Ryan Braun (Brewers), Melky Cabrera (Giants), and Michael Bourn (Braves)

The saying goes that leagues are lost, not won in the first round, but Ryan Braun is trying to silence those cries this year. Although Matt Kemp was drafted ahead of Braun and has spent most of the season on the disabled list, Braun has put his steroid drama on the backburners by hitting .314 with 20 HR and 52 RBI. Five category contributors are nearly impossible to find, but Braun ranks in the top 16 of outfielders in all 5 categories.

Melky was drafted 38th amongst outfielders as owners were clearly torn between whether he could reproduce last season?s statistics or not. Cabrera has silenced the critics, in a much tougher ballpark, by hitting .351 and scoring 51 runs so far. Although his 10 steals don?t excite people, he?s on pace to set a personal best and swipe over 20 bases. Melky?s success this year is due to his approach of relying on grounders, which is a very smart approach for a guy without much power in a big ballpark.

Michael Bourn has always been an underrated fantasy commodity and owners thought they realized this by ranking him in the top 20 outfielders this season. Well, Bourn has outperformed his draft position once again, and he?s been a top 10 outfielder so far. As a leadoff hitter who hits for a high average and steals bases with the best of them, Bourn has added power to his resume this year as he?s hit 7 home runs, more than Adrian Gonzalez. The strong 4-category player will continue to succeed as he checked in at 7 on the RotoAnalysis Outfield Rankings for the remainder of the season.

Backups: Andrew McCutchen (Pirates), Jayson Heyward (Braves), and Carlos Beltran (Cardinals)

Starting Pitcher: R.A. Dickey, Mets

Dickey has been the single most valuable starting pitcher for fantasy owners in all of baseball so far this season, despite being the 70th ranked pitcher before the season. There?s not much I can say about Dickey that hasn?t already been said?he?s an enigma, but he?s contributed in all 4 starting-pitcher categories, and should continue to do so going forward.

First Reliever: James McDonald, Pirates

McDonald went undrafted in most leagues and was ranked 111th among starting pitcher in the preseason, yet he?s currently one of the ten most valuable pitchers for fantasy in all of baseball, and would be higher if the Pirates gave him a little more run support, granting him more than 7 wins. McDonald has made a variety of helpful adjustments this year, which I wrote about in more depth for RotoAnalysis, but some of them include improved command inside and outside the strike zone, less reliance on his fastball especially in both 3 ball and 2 strike counts, and he has also added a highly effective slider. I have full confidence in McDonald to be a top 15-20 pitcher going forward.

Second Reliever: Wade Miley, Diamondbacks

Miley is more of a 3 category performer than most of the pitchers on this list, as he doesn?t strike out very many batters, but luck-based or not, you cannot argue with the stat line Miley?s put up this season. A 2.19 ERA, a barely over 1.00 WHIP, and 9 wins to go with a mediocre 64 strikeouts are elite statistics, especially for someone who wasn?t ranked in the top 200 starting pitchers in the preseason. There are huge questions about Miley?s stats going forward, but there is no way you can question what he?s done so far. This spot is definitely deserved.

Third Reliever: Matt Cain, Giants

Cain and Dickey have been neck-and-neck for a while now competing for the top spot in the actual All-Star game, but Cain slipped to fourth in the Fantasy All-Star Game because he was much more highly touted (27th ranked starting pitcher preseason) than the above three guys. Going forward, Cain is definitely the safest and most reliable option out of the top 4 fantasy All-Star pitchers in the NL, thanks to his above average ?stuff,? great command, consistent track record and gigantic home ballpark.

Fourth Reliever: Gio Gonzalez, Nationals

Throughout his entire career, Gio has always been an absolutely electric pitcher to watch when he is on. What has made this season different from the rest of his career has been the absence of those huge blow-up outings that he used to have so often. Gonzalez currently sits at 2nd in the NL in strikeouts, and when that?s paired with 10 wins, a sub-2.80 ERA, and a 1.08 WHIP, it?s really a testament to just how good pitching in the NL has been this year that he?s not ranked higher up on this list.

Fifth Reliever: Stephen Strasburg, Nationals

Innings limit worries aside, Stephen Strasburg is one of the five most talented pitchers in baseball right now. So far this season, he?s more than earned his rank of the 20th best starter. Strasburg leads the MLB with 118 K?s (10 more than Gio Gonzalez?s 108), and is only behind Gio thanks to the disparity in their preseason rankings. I don?t know whether or not the Nationals will go through with their innings cap on Strasburg, but I do know that when he pitches, Strasburg is going to absolutely dominate, as he?s shown invariably throughout his career.

Closer: Aroldis Chapman, Reds

Chapman didn?t start this year with a closer job, leaving him undrafted in most leagues and completely reasonably ranked as the 77th relief pitcher in the preseason. However, outside of Craig Kimbrel, no National League relief pitcher has been better than Chapman so far this year, thanks to his absolute dominance with and without the closer role, sporting a 1.98 ERA and 0.77 WHIP to go with 9 saves and a whopping 64 strikeouts (the same as Wade Miley) in less than 37 innings. I know he?s had some trouble of late, but his full-season stats are still phenomenal, and I?d rank Chapman as the number 1 relief pitcher in all of baseball going forward.

Rest of Bullpen: Johnny Cueto (Reds), Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), Chris Capuano (Dodgers), Lance Lynn (Cardinals),? Kenley Jansen (Dodgers), and Johan Santana (Mets)

Louis Vuitton takes a dip in hot day 2 of menswear

PARIS (AP) ? Day two of menswear spring-summer 2013 shows was all about the heat.

Temperatures soared so high that one house, Issey Miyake, even decided to hand out designer ice packs to the clammy front row.

The label that's known for its functionality shared with fashion insiders a special moment on Thursday.

It was the return of its 74-year-old house founder, who retired from menswear in 1994.

Japanese Miyake, who made a name for himself in technology driven clothes, allowed models to cool down by dressing them in paper.

The other day's shows included big-spender Louis Vuitton ? one of the world's most lucrative brands.

It was a slick affair for the menswear designer Kim Jones, who got his feet wet with cool, nautical designs.

The London fashion graduate is quickly making a name for himself for luxurious, yet tasteful designs.

Meanwhile, designers from the Low Countries, Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf and Belgian Dries Van Noten, injected the day with an edgy attitude.

Friday's shows will include Atelier Gustavolins and Givenchy.

LOUIS VUITTON

Louis Vuitton's Kim Jones presented a deft and confident catwalk homage to the active man.

There was something for yachtsmen, athletes, fishermen ? and even safari explorers ? in an eminently wearable and wide-ranging collection of sporty elegance.

Might it be that Jones, who is in only his third outing as the house's menswear designer, is trying to impress Louis Vuitton CEO Yves Carcelle, a yachting fanatic?

"I guess so," Jones said backstage.

Whatever the reason, it was a winning formula.

Yellow fisherman's macs twinned with relaxed navy pants and white leather deck shoes to give off one message: we're nautical but nice.

A laser cut blouson in gray was worn by a model sporting a cheeky anchor earring.

Another piece, one of the collection's best, would be sure to help any model stranded at sea: a padded leather life vest.

The show was also kitted out for a safari and then the racetrack.

A series of khaki ensembles merged into skintight scuba tops that could have seen the model break out into a sprint.

Jones' aim was to pull off a "relaxed and soft" collection.

All too aware that too much exercise can be bad for health, he allowed his summer man some R&R in the Cote d'Azur in the form of a series of beautiful check silk suits.

The program notes cited the insouciance of Southern France.

It's Jones who might deserve some time off.

With a few strong collections under his belt, he can ? until next season ? afford to rest on his laurels.

ISSEY MIYAKE MEN

Issey Miyake's collection marked the return of the Japanese designer to the creative helm in a menswear show of clothes made, incredibly, almost exclusively of paper.

Understatement is an art form in Japan and the behind-the-scenes artistry at work in Miyake's clothes paid tribute to that tradition.

In the past few months, the Issey Miyake design team painstakingly learned the age-old technique of Washi paper bonding, knitting and canvas making. Their teacher ? an elderly Japanese lady ? is the only surviving expert in the tradition.

Voluminous but stiff cagoules, blousons and jackets in airy white and charcoal black filed by at the Paris show. Their cool, starch stiffness was achieved by bonding paper with rayon before laminating the surface.

Oversized ponchos with knee-length shorts that had sporty yellow markers were achieved by cutting paper into narrow strips and then twisting it to make yarn. They are apparently completely washable.

It was a shame that the designers added another theme into the mix: cycling.

Several models wearing backpacks, which squashed the paper tops, cycled down the runway on bicycles. The sporty distraction was the only element that took away from an otherwise diaphanous ensemble.

Flashes of bright reds and cobalt blues in cool shirts and V-necks reminded spectators it was summer, though it was hardly necessary in the weltering Parisian climate.

DRIES VAN NOTEN

Dries Van Noten is a man of contradictions.

No show demonstrates this better than his surprising menswear collection Thursday for spring-summer 2013.

Camouflage print featured on shorts, pants, shirts and jackets ? sometimes even just on strips.

It made the models look like they should run off and hide.

Then fencing gear ? such as quilted, white breastplates, and jackets with sword-proof velcro lapels ? said "I'm ready for attack."

There was no middle ground: silhouettes were either unstructured and loose or tight and tailored.

Colors were either muted or in flashes of unapologetic electric blue, orange, ochre and canary.

One ensemble had it all: a see-through fencing shirt in blue and white branded with a horizontal strip of camouflage.

To add to the symphony of confusion, this sheer shirt was paired to clash with thick check plaid trousers.

There were some very salable looks: one trendy oversized black, blue and grey knit sweater ? a nod back to the 1980s ? is sure to be a hit.

Another extremely simple baggy grey sweater and assorted cardigan was pure elegance.

So with such a strong collection ? and all its camouflage ? what does the designer need to hide from?

"I'm not hiding from anything," said Van Noten backstage, confidently. "That's why I put it on a white catwalk."

VIKTOR & ROLF MONSIEUR

Viktor and Rolf produced a vibrant show with a taste of India ? mixing the colors and silhouettes of the subcontinent with their signature suits.

For the very Western design duo, based in Amsterdam, the East seems like an unlikely place to go.

"We were in the mood for something spiritual, sartorial and Indian. ... We liked the contrast," Viktor Horsting said backstage.

The affair was certainly more millionaire than slumdog with wool-silk silhouettes in burnt oranges, deep red, tonal peach and sparkles of Bollywood-style glass appliques.

The Eastern influence saw their normally strict sartorial approach softened in suits. They were less constructed than in previous seasons.

One softly striped suit had a feel of rich Indian linen.

In other looks, jackets were worn with Jodhpur trousers ? an Indian garment imported to Europe under Queen Victoria ? to create subtle carrot shaped silhouettes.

The dalliance with India, was, however, short lived.

The strongest part of the collection was the interesting variation of the very European herringbone print. It featured in jacquards for tuxedo jackets, and hand drawn for lightweight wool suiting.

When the holiday is over, after all, you always venture home.

Useful Tips For Selecting The Best Nursing Program

These days, nursing is one of the best fields you could enter. Why? One of the reasons is that so many other sectors are doing poorly. The global economy has still not recovered from the Great Recession of 2008, and there are signs that indicate that more difficult times may be ahead. But for students entering nursing school, there are hardly any signs of a recession.

The main reason for the incredible growth in the health care field is demographics. Put simply, world populations are aging. This is especially true in developed countries like the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and most of Western Europe. In the U.S. alone, there are millions of Baby Boomers entering retirement, and they are expected to live longer than any previous generation. In fact, it is projected that many ?Boomers? will live well into their 90s.

The combination of the largest generation in U.S. history retiring at a time when medical technology has lengthened life expectancy far beyond what we could have imagined even a couple decades ago has created a need for health care professionals to tend to the medical needs of all these retirees. And a nursing program is the best way for most people to get a foot in the door of this lucrative field.

When it comes time to choose the right nursing school, there are a few questions to consider:

How soon do I want to be working?

One of the biggest considerations is your financial situation and how soon you need an income. If you need to be working right away, then becoming a CNA (certified nursing assistant) might be best. CNAs only have to train for a few weeks, then they are ready to enter the work force. And, the pay isn?t too bad either-you can earn around $15 an hour. Not great, but significantly higher than minimum wage.

What level of income do I want?

While CNAs can be working rather quickly, their pay is lower than that of an LPN or RN. It may be sufficient for those who are the second income earner in the house and don?t have a need to go for a higher pay scale, but for others, the LPN and eventually RN options pay much better. RN is obviously the best, but it takes longer to get through the schooling.

What level of responsibility can I handle?

With the higher pay of an RN comes greater responsibility, and often times longer hours working on salary. For those who are ambitious and want to eventually supervise LPNs, the RN option may be the best fit. But for those who don?t want the responsibility and lack the time and/or inclination to go the extra couple years of school, an LPN program may be just fine.

No matter which path you pick, your choices are not etched in stone. For example, a CNA can always go to LPN training part time, and an LPN can do the same working toward becoming an RN. Choose the option that?s best for your current circumstances, and you can always switch gears if your situation changes.

Sherlund: Microsoft's Surface will be licensing Windows same as other OEMS

There are lots of interesting tidbits from a note to investors that Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund just sent out, following his meeting this morning with Microsoft Corporate Vice President Mike Angiulo and Windows division Chief Financial Office Tami Reller.

Among the highlights:

  • Microsoft "has stated that its own hardware group would license Windows on the same terms as other OEM partners," Sherlund says in the note.
  • Microsoft will report its Surface revenues in the Windows and Windows Live division.

("We would like to see the hardware portion broken out separately so there is transparency between the Windows revenues and the hardware portion so we could assess the margins on the hardware side," Sherlund writes. "MSFT has not commented on whether it will be selling its hardware at a loss initially as volumes ramp as we had observed with the Xbox console business, but we would not be surprised to see this early on")

  • Sherlund expects Windows 8 to be released to manufacturer in mid-to-late July, with general availability in mid-October. (That's been the consensus expectation so far, too.)
  • Sherlund writes that his hands-on experience with Surface was positive.

News Flash: It is Illegal for Debt Collectors to Stalk Debtors on Facebbok or Threaten to Kill Their Dogs

Do any of you read creditcards.com? It is a great source of info on various topics, not just credit cards. Today?s story featured three debt collection horror tales, as well as a state of the nation of nasty collection efforts. According to the story, in 2011, the FTC received 180,000 complaints about debt collectors, an increase of over 40,000 from 2010. In one case, a debt collector filed a lawsuit against a California debt collector, hired by a funeral home, who threatened to dig up the body of the debtor's daughter -- and also to shoot her dog. Here is a run-down of three other featured stories.?

In the first one entitled ?terrorized by text,? Jessica Burke fell behind on her car payments. She called the financing company, and they agreed to give her extra time to pay. But the next day, she got a call from a man using a fake name who threatened to sue. He got her address and other private information from her cell phone company (say what?) by impersonating her father and asking to be added to her account. He called and texted and called and texted, after some time of which she called the police, who ordered the collector to stop contacting her. But the texts continued for weeks, coming from a disguised number and implying that he was watching her. In one, he called her "Porky Pig" and a "200-pound slob" and added, "I got picture messages of you today." Late one night, she says, he texted her, claiming he was outside her house. She says: "It was

11 o'clock at night, I lived in a very rural area and I was home by myself. I was terrified."? She ultimately got a judgment of $33,312 against the debt collector, who told her lawyer he had no intention of paying.

In tale number two, entitled ?get your gun,? the debt collector called West Virginia homemaker Diana Mey about a debt owed by a son that had not lived there for eight years. The debt collector left a message on Mey's home answering machine. "It was a very ominous message that implied legal action," Mey says. Later, after requesting that the debt collector stop contacting her, the calls continued, and now caller ID suggested that the calls were coming from the local sheriff's department.

"I called the sheriff's department and said, 'Is somebody trying to get ahold of me?' They said 'No.'" in one late-night call,?a deep male voice on the other end asked for Diana, using a vulgar slur. He then went on to make graphic threats of sexual assault. Horrified, Mey told him she was recording the call.? After she hung up, Mey called 911 to report the incident. Home alone, she got her husband's gun and hung it on her bedpost that night. She says: "I was literally shaking I was so scared."

Mey sued the company, Global AG, also known by several other names, including Reliant Financial Associates. Alas, the collection company's attorney didn't show up in court, so a judge listened to Mey's testimony and the super-vulgar tape with a local TV station filming. The judge awarded Mey a judgment of more than $10.8 million, but of course collection will be another story.

Tale number three involved facebook stalking, in a case in which Kathryn Haralson in Florida fell behind on her car payments. The bill collectors called the debtor, her office, her father, her brother, her husband, and her daughter, who was away at college. The collector dialed her husband's cell phone so much that he had to stop answering it and missed several business calls, she says. The collector called her brother at work enough to jeopardize his job and refused to stop, she says. Then he tracked Haralson down on Facebook and wrote: "Good day. Please contact Mr. Rice at MarkOne regarding a personal business matter," followed by his phone number. She found a lawyer and is prepared to sue. No kidding!

Check out the whole story (this was most of it) and get some useful tips for consumers for dealing with this sort of thing.

Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman Karen Pride says a problem with the lighting equipment caused the outage at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Pride says 85 flights were canceled or diverted while the airport was closed.

Flights resumed early Friday, and airlines are working to get back on schedule.

The outage didn't affect the terminals, so passengers aboard planes when the runways went dark were returned to the terminals and taken off the planes.

Commonwealth Edison spokeswoman Martha Swaney says the outage wasn't caused by a ComEd power failure, but she says the utility's crews worked with Midway's personnel to help them get their equipment working again.

Some Democrats are skipping national convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Some Democrats in tough races are returning their invitations to the Democratic National Convention with a note attached: Thanks, but no thanks.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri is the highest-profile Democrat to announce she'll skip the September shindig in Charlotte, N.C. At least 10 Democratic incumbents and front-running challengers will be no-shows, according to a count by The Associated Press.

All hail from conservative-leaning or toss-up states where President Barack Obama, whose speech accepting the party's presidential nomination will be the climax of the three-day convention, could be a drag on down-ballot Democrats.

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., is out, his campaign said. So are Democratic Reps. Mark Critz of Pennsylvania and Jim Matheson of Utah. In West Virginia, where more than 40 percent of Democratic voters chose an incarcerated felon over Obama in the May primary, Sen. Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall will both steer clear of Charlotte.

Rep. John Barrow of Georgia, a top target of House Republicans, won't attend, his office confirmed. Neither will former Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Ohio, who is fighting to reclaim the seat he lost in 2010.

"You're seeing it in swing states and also in areas that are home to Reagan Democrats, culturally conservative Democrats," said Saul Anuzis, a Republican strategist. "It's smart politics in swing areas for the Democrats to run away, but that also sends a signal to independent voters that maybe Obama isn't such a great idea."

Democrats and their aides insisted the decision has nothing to do with Obama or the economy and everything to do with timing.

"Would you go to North Carolina for a bunch of parties and glad-handing, or would you stay home and work as hard as you know how and convince Missourians they should rehire you?" McCaskill said Tuesday when she announced she wasn't attending the convention.

The convention falls barely two months before Election Day. Unless candidates can raise major cash at the convention, there is little to be gained from leaving their states and districts to hobnob with fellow Democrats. The start of the convention also coincides with Labor Day, when candidates traditionally hold major events back home.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign on Wednesday dubbed the reluctant Democrats "defectors" and said they had jumped ship on the president. The Republican National Committee tied the no-shows to Obama's economic record, arguing that Democrats were seeking distance from promises left unkept.

"You know Team Obama has problems when some of Obama's biggest supporters don't want to be seen with the president as he's nominated to run for a second term," said RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski.

The risks of appearing too chummy with the president are all too real for McCaskill, who faces a difficult re-election fight in a state Obama lost in 2008. Crossroads GPS, a conservative outside group founded by Republican political operative Karl Rove, has already aired an attack ad dubbed "Obama-Claire" that uses images of the two Democrats together.

"A Democrat is a Democrat. You can't deny that you're a Democrat, just as the Republicans mostly don't deny that they're Republicans," said former Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, who chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the 1990s.

The committee's current chairman, Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., said recently that candidates should make their own decisions about whether or not to attend. But Israel added that it makes complete sense for candidates to stay in their districts ? where they can interact with voters ? rather than leave town a few months before the election.

In the Senate, where Democrats can only lose four seats and still hold their majority if Obama is re-elected, the party's nominees for open seats in Arizona and North Dakota have both said they will campaign at home rather than fly to Charlotte. Both are states Obama lost in 2008.

Democrats aren't the only ones thinking twice about showing up for their party's big party. Former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican seeking a Senate seat in liberal-leaning Hawaii, said she won't attend the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., in late August. The same holds true for Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., and former Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M. Both are seeking Senate seats.

Turkey sends military convoys toward Syrian border

A bomb targeting Syria's highest court has exploded in Damascus. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

By msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News' Aziz Akyavas and news services

Updated at 09:55 ET: Hamas said on Thursday that one of its members, Kamal Husni Ghanaja, had been killed in his home in Damascus and that it was trying to find who was behind what the Palestinian Islamist group described as a "cowardly murder."

Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, said in a statement that it was trying "to identify the party behind the deplorable crime," but did not immediately accuse Israel, its long-time enemy, of involvement in the killing.?

ISKENDERUN, Turkey -- Turkish troops and military vehicles deployed toward the border with Syria on Thursday as a precaution after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan gave orders to react to any Syrian threat approaching the frontier.

Erdogan, who has given shelter in the border area to rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad, announced the new rules of engagement for Turkish troops on the border after Syrian air defenses shot down a Turkish warplane last Friday.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sits in the cockpit of a Hurkus aircraft, Turkey's first locally-produced military training plane, during a ceremony in Ankara on Wednesday.

"I can confirm there are troops being deployed along the border in Hatay province. Turkey is taking precautions after its jet was shot down," a Turkish official said on condition of anonymity.

He said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved but said they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas of Turkey's southern Hatay province. He said anti-aircraft guns were also being stationed along the border.

Turkey to help 'liberate the Syrians from dictatorship'

A military convoy of vehicles including anti-aircraft missile launchers from the 5th Mechanized Armored Brigade left a base in the southeastern city of Gaziantep on Thursday and travelled to neighboring Kilis province on the border, video from the Turkish Dogan news agency showed.

A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital near a busy market and the Palace of Justice. Msnbc.com's Richard Lui reports.

Roads were closed to traffic as the convoy, escorted by police cars, passed by.

Seven die in attack on pro-regime TV station

Another convoy of about 30 military vehicles, including trucks loaded with missile batteries, left Turkey's coastal town of Iskenderun on Wednesday and deployed near the Syrian border 30 miles away, Turkish news agencies said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his newly appointed cabinet that a real "state of war" exists in the country and directed them to direct all its efforts toward vanquishing the uprising against him. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Turkish television film showed the column moving on Wednesday, escorted by police cars, along a narrow highway leading out of the town, the main port of Turkey's Hatay province. It included rocket launchers on transporters, anti-aircraft artillery and military ambulances.

A Reuters journalist saw another large truck carrying an anti-aircraft gun leave Iskenderun on Thursday for the border area, escorted by two army trucks, one carrying 10 troops.

'No more tolerance'
Erdogan said any military element moving towards the Turkish border and deemed threatening would be declared a military target. The preponderance of air defense weapons in the convoy suggested Turkey was preparing for any possible approach by Syrian helicopters or warplanes.

Homs and other Syrian suburbs continue to be relentlessly shelled. Meanwhile, rebel fighters targeted the main court building in the capital. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

NYT: Turkish border a crucial link in Syrian conflict

While the military movements were ratcheting up the pressure on Syria, Turkey was likely being very careful, NBC News producer?Aziz Akyavas in Turkey said.

"Syria has been chasing Syrians fleeing the country and hitting Turkish soldiers and posts," he said on the telephone on the border with Syria. "Turkey is saying, from now on no more tolerance."

The Turkish border region is sheltering more than 33,000 Syrian refugees as well as elements of the rebel Free Syrian Army.

But "the Turks are being very careful, using diplomatic language very carefully -- a war would be a real disaster," he added.?

State-run Anatolia news agency said armored military vehicles were being transported to military installations in Sanliurfa, in the middle of Turkey's border with Syria, and Hatay, a panhandle province that juts down into Syria.

Report: Syrian general, dozens of other soldiers defect to Turkey

It said several military vehicles had travelled separately to a military garrison in the border town of Reyhanli in Hatay.

Specific details have not been made public of the new rules of engagement issued to troops after the shooting down of the warplane, which Turkey says was in international air space but Syria says entered its territory at high speed.

Syria's pro-government television station has been attacked. Seven people were killed. It is one of the boldest attacks yet on a symbol of that regime as rebel forces step up the fighting around the capital Damascus. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Aram Nerguizian, a Syria expert at Washington, D.C.,-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, told msnbc.com that?Assad "has a very small window" ?to say that the downing of the the Turkish fighter was a mistake.

"Syria is sitting and not providing a high-level response to this (and) the last thing these players should be doing is not talking to each other," he said. "These are two of the region?s largest militaries and it would be disastrous if things deteriorated in ways neither side expected."

Nerguizian added that "neither side wants to show weakness."

Blast near busy market
Meanwhile, a?strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital Thursday near a busy market and the Palace of Justice, sending black smoke billowing into the sky. State TV reported at least three people were wounded and around 20 cars were damaged.?

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said some cars were charred and many had their windshields blown out.

A fireman tries to extinguish fires at the scene of two huge bomb explosions outside the Palace of Justice in Central Damascus on Thursday.

Syria's state-run TV said the explosion was in the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, a compound that houses several courts. The blast happened at 1 p.m. near the capital's famous Hamidiyeh Market, an area crowded with families stocking up on food and other supplies for the weekend, which begins on Friday in Syria.

Witnesses reported hearing one blast, but state-run TV said two explosions struck the area. The report also said a roadside bomb was found but did not explode.

Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton, NBC News' Aziz Akyavas, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Robotic quadrotors' training now complete, proven with razzle-dazzle Cannes show (video)

robotic-quadrotors-cannes-light-sound-show

We've watched our potential quad-mech overlords from KMel Robotics evolve from agile solo acrobats to worker bees to deft synchronized performers. It seemed only a matter of time before they would hunt down Sarah Connor en masse -- or take the show-biz world by storm. Fortunately for us, the tricky flyers chose to embrace their flamboyant side at a tour-de-force 16-quad lightshow in Cannes, where they opened the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors' Showcase. The soaring automatons pulled all their past tricks out of the bag, flying precisely with mirrors to bounce lights from below, all timed to dramatic music --which they also had a hand in controlling. The sparkly treat awaits right after the break.
