Texas (6-8) got one clutch hit in 16 innings Sunday good enough to split a doubleheader with Loyola Marymount, but not good enough to keep college baseball's winningest coach from questioning his go-to phrase.
After losing the first game 1-0 and winning the second game 3-1, Augie Garrido was asked if his team's offensive struggles were a byproduct of trying too hard.
"I've thought that for a long time," he said. "But after a while, how do you continue to try too hard when there's nobody pushing you to try too hard? There's nobody putting any kind of pressure on you. At some point it becomes their responsibility to perform."
In the opener Longhorns starter Nathan Thornhill threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits in a game that was supposed to last seven innings but turned into a nine-inning affair because neither offense could score. Loyola's Scott Harkin doubled off Parker French in the ninth for the only run. In Game 2, Texas' Tim Maitland had a two-run triple.
