Amazon Says Streaming Web Usage, Spending Increasing - Peter ...

amazon videoNetflix added a bunch of streaming video subscribers in the last quarter. How did rival Amazon do?

Who knows? Amazon is fiercely dedicated to the notion that it won?t say squat about its business, and things stayed true to form during yesterday?s earnings call.

But the question did come up a few times during the call. Which makes sense, because Jeff Bezos is pumping a bunch of money into video ? by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings?s account, perhaps a billion dollars a year.

So Amazon CFO Thomas Szkutak did make a point of telling Wall Street that things are moving up and to the right ? both in terms of usage and investment dollars. A collection of his video-related quotes, via Seeking Alpha:

* ?The percentage of Prime customers who were watching free content through Prime Instant Videos has gone up dramatically year-over-year?

* ?We have also increased Prime membership dramatically, year-over-year. They are also purchasing a paid content. Those customers that are using this, they watch free but they are also paying for new content which is great.?

* ?I can?t give you specific for attach rates but the business is making good progress on the video content side. Again it?s still very early.?

* ?We will continue to expand our selection, both in terms of Amazon Instant Video as well Prime Instant Video and we will do that in a number of different ways. We think we have a very interesting selection right now and you should expect that will be spending more on content as it relates to Prime over time. We will continue to add selection on the Instant Video. Beyond that, you have to stay tuned.?

In other words: Yes, we?re spending a bunch of money. And yes, based on outsiders? guesstimates, we?re way, way, way behind Netflix in terms of overall video streaming usage. But we think our ?spend now, earn later? strategy is going to pay off here, too.

Yandex's Wonder app latest to be quashed by Facebook

By Zach Miners, IDG News Service?|??Internet

Russian search giant Yandex is temporarily suspending the development of its Wonder social discovery app just one week after Facebook blocked the app's access to its API data.

The Wonder app was designed to synthesize information from a user's social networking activity on Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare and Twitter to provide answers to questions about places, music and news. Users could ask the app, for instance, which sushi restaurants their friends had gone to in New York, what types of music certain friends were listening to, or even news stories that had been shared by friends.

Though it was optional for users to connect the app with their preexisting network of Instagram, Foursquare and Twitter friends, it was mandatory for users to link the app to their Facebook accounts.

"Wonder's functioning, in its current state, as well as the quality of user experience it provides, largely depends on the access to Facebook's graph API," said Yandex spokesman Vladimir Isaev via email. "Since this access was revoked, we decided to put our application on hold for the time being."

Facebook blocked Wonder's access to its social API (application programming interface) within four hours of the app's beta launch to iOS users in the United States.

Wonder was built to offer users social search tools at a time when Facebook is making moves to stake its own claim in search. The social network launched its local-business discovery feature Nearby last year for its mobile app, and is in the process of rolling out its much-talked-about social Graph Search tool.

Many of the questions Graph Search is designed to answer -- such as, "Which Mexican restaurants are liked by my friends in San Francisco?" -- are strikingly similar to the types of queries intended for Wonder.

The Wonder shutdown is part of a larger issue tied to whether certain firms are allowed to access other social networks' API data. Last week, Twitter's new Vine mobile video app sparked lots of questions just hours after its launch when users discovered they were unable to access their Facebook friends through the service.

Facebook, in response, published an update to its platform policies in an effort to explain why it blocked the friend-search feature on Vine.

To explain Wonder's blocked access, Yandex's Isaev points to the same policies, in part stating that no data obtained from Facebook can be used in any search engine or directory without the company's written permission.

KU offers full-ride scholarship to Topeka high-schooler blogging on college choice for NY Times

We told you last month about Leobardo Espinoza Jr., a high-school senior in Topeka who's preparing to be a first-generation college student and blogging about his school choice for the New York Times. At that time, he'd just written that he had visited KU, but he had applied to a bunch of other schools and wondered if he might like to go somewhere farther away.

Well, turns out KU has introduced a $40,000 wrinkle to his story.

Today, Espinoza has another blog post telling the story of how two KU representatives came to his high school and offered him a four-year, full-ride scholarship as he stood at the front of a room full of classmates.

One official told him folks at KU had been reading his blog entries, looked him dead in the eye and said, "We want you at the University of Kansas," he writes. Then Espinoza looked inside the envelope handed to him to see an offer for a four-year scholarship that would pay for all of his tuition and fees, plus an allowance for books.

That would be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000 over the course of four years, depending on what happens with tuition rates this summer. (See KU's cost calculator here.)

But here's the thing: Espinoza's still not sure about going to KU. He sounds genuinely grateful about the offer, but he says he's always considered KU a "fallback school." According to a chart at the bottom of the entry, he's waiting to hear back about applications to Yale, Stanford, Brown, Washington-St. Louis and others.

All in all, I'd suggest giving the entry a read, as it lays his thought process bare in a way that's pretty compelling, even touching. He's pretty obviously conflicted about this. No matter how you feel about the fact he's not jumping on an offer of free tuition for four years at KU, you have to hand it to him for being so transparent about his decision and taking his future so seriously.

I'll be following along to see what happens.

I'm afraid I can't offer you $40,000 if you submit a KU news tip to merickson@ljworld.com, but I will be very appreciative, I promise.

A Fifth of Global Investing Considered ?Sustainable?, Industry ...

  • by Carey L. Biron (washington)
  • Wednesday, January 30, 2013
  • Inter Press Service

WASHINGTON, Jan 30 (IPS) - Nearly 22 percent of professionally managed assets around the world can be considered sustainable or responsible, according to a finance industry assessment, the first comprehensive look at the subject.

That amounts to at least 13.6 trillion dollars of investments that claim to incorporate concerns over environmental, social or governance issues into their selection or management processes. Still, critics warn that a lack of industry guidelines on how to define terms such as "sustainable" remains a major obstacle in leveraging private investment for the good of both human communities and environmental systems.

The trend behind those figures is certainly substantial. From 2009 to 2011, the sustainable investment sector in Europe grew by 35 percent; in the United States during that same timeframe, such investments grew by 22 percent and, from 2005 to 2012, the sector grew by a massive 486 percent.

"This is encouraging in a time when many parts of the financial industry are under pressure to demonstrate value, and it suggests that there are high levels of investor interest around the world in financing the businesses, projects and ideas needed to drive sustainable growth," states the new Global Sustainability Investment Review 2012, released on Monday.

The authors, working under the auspices of a new group, the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance (GSIA), a finance industry umbrella group, note that the findings "conclusively show that the sustainable investment industry has significant scale in the global arena" and suggest "a sustainable investment landscape that is well-developed, diverse and culturally responsive".

Still, the vast majority of the sector as currently defined is made up of Western countries, with the United States, European Union and Canada comprising 96 percent of these assets. GSIA researchers, however, expect such investments to continue to rise in all regions.

"A number of emerging markets are seeing ideas of corporate social responsibility as a way of attracting foreign investment, and many have been looking into the idea, for instance, of having sustainable stock exchanges," Meg Voorhes, deputy director and research director for the U.S. Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment (U.S. SIF), told IPS, specifically pointing to moves by Brazil and South Africa.

"The assets involved may be small, but this is certainly providing momentum," she said.

Of that 13.6 trillion dollars, a full 89 percent of sustainable investments are made by institutions, with only the remaining 11 percent being "retail" investments made by individuals (though the retail level is higher in the United States than in Europe). By far the largest strategy, making up some 8.3 trillion dollars in assets, is what is known as exclusionary screening, wherein a certain sector (for instance, the tobacco industry) or country (Sudan) is deemed off-limits.

While the seven organisations ? made up of fund managers and a broad spectrum of finance industry players ? involved in the report's creation have each produced region-specific analyses on sustainable and responsible investing in the past, the new report marks the first time that researchers have stepped back to standardise indicators and compare worldwide trends.

Global impetus

The report's publication also marks the formation of the GSIA, which aims to allow members to share information and experience across countries and industry niches. That could be an important process, given that today's sustainable investment sector is held together by no common rules and few defined common understandings.

Inevitably, this impacts on the ways in which sustainability-related decisions are made. In the United States and Canada, for instance, shareholders have far more leeway to file resolutions than they do in Europe. In Europe, on the other hand, companies tend to be more open to signing on to international standards (for instance, those set by the United Nations) than are their U.S. counterparts.

"There are plenty of grey areas and no clear-cut answer on how companies decide on where to draw certain lines, but that helps explain why shareholder engagement is so important," U.S. SIF's Voorhes said.

"Certainly in the U.S., when we survey investment managers about why they are engaging in this form of investment, the leading answer is client demand. When we look at institutional asset owners, the leading factor is that these types of investments are aligned with a broader mission."

She also notes that public funds are usually responding to specific legislation, "which you could argue represents the public will". Indeed, for years U.S. SIF has been a strong advocate for legislation that would require greater corporate disclosure of social and environmental indicators.

Still, broader forces have clearly been at work in pushing investors in these directions in recent years.

"Global trends we all face are a warming planet and population growth ? there's now a real sense, and added urgency, that we're at our planetary limits and have to be very careful how we're managing planetary resources," Voorhes said.

"Another global trend is the speed with which information moves, where today it's far easier for investors in one country to see what a company is doing around the world. Labour abuses, for instance, are far easier to hear about today than they were a few decades ago. There is simply a greater level of disclosure in this interconnected world."

Greenwash

Still, many advocates have expressed frustration that there remain no set guidelines despite the significant expansion of the sustainable investment sector. Some warn that this could allow companies to put in place only superficial policies while painting themselves as socially responsible.

One significant point of concern among some environmentalists, for instance, is that investment funds will look to strengthen their "green" credentials by choosing to invest in alternatives to fossil fuels ? the biofuel products that to a great degree are fuelling the purchases of massive swaths of arable land across parts of Africa by Western corporations.

"It is a huge problem that there are no set criteria used by industry today to define ?sustainable' practices or investments ? on what basis are these claims being made and who has vetted any such criteria?" Anuradha Mittal, the executive director of the Oakland Institute, which has researched extensively on current "land-grab" trends, told IPS.

"Investment is necessary, but only if investment criteria are first vetted by local communities, to incorporate labour, environmental and social concerns. Given that no such standards exist, and given that corporate accountability remains a major difficulty, this is extremely problematic. We need to see that investment is actually elevating communities and natural systems, because that's what the world needs."

(AP) ? Dutch club FC Den Bosch pledged Wednesday to do all it can to identify and punish a group of fans who hurled racist abuse at United States striker Jozy Altidore during a match.

Den Bosch said fans responsible for the monkey chants Tuesday in the Dutch Cup match against Altidore's AZ Alkmaar "do not belong in the De Vliert (Stadium) and will face the toughest possible sanctions."

The racist chants gave a hollow ring to the slogan "Without respect, no football" that was coined by Dutch soccer authorities in the aftermath of the death of a linesman who was attacked by players after a match between two youth teams near Amsterdam in December.

Altidore, who is black, was not available for comment Wednesday. He's played for the U.S. national team and the New York Red Bulls from 2006-08.

After the match, he told Dutch television the chants were the worst abuse he has been subjected to on a soccer field.

"It's a bit disappointing that these things still happen in this time that we're in," Altidore told Eredivisie Live. "But what you going to do? You just hope these people can find a way to improve themselves. You can only pray for them."

Altidore, one of Dutch soccer's most prolific strikers this season, scored a goal from the penalty spot in his team's 5-0 win over Den Bosch and urged the referee not to take the players off the field despite the chants.

The 23-year-old American said education is the key to stamping out such chants.

"At the end of the day it's still alive, racism. All we can do now is try to educate ourselves, the young kids coming up, to be better than that," Altidore said.

Den Bosch condemned the chants from a small section of the crowd.

"A cup tie that was supposed to be played in an atmosphere of respect has left us scarred," the club said in a statement on its website.

Referee Reinold Wiedemeijer halted play briefly in the second half because fans threw balls of ice at his linesmen.

Offensive chants are nothing new in Dutch soccer stadiums, but it had been hoped that the sharpened focus on respect following the death of volunteer linesman Richard Nieuwenhuizen might help eradicate them.

"(The fans) totally ruined weeks of preparations with monkey chants, throwing things at match officials and not showing respect for those on and around the pitch," Den Bosch said.

High school offers go-kart racing classes

Class is now in session (Motor Trader Malaysia)We?ve all heard stories about colleges offering questionable courses for class credit: Frisbee golf, a sociological study of Lady Gaga and even a lecture series on surviving the zombie apocalypse.

But the Manatee School of the Arts high school is giving them a run for their money, offering a course on ?the Physics of Motorsports.?

More specifically, as local ABC affiliate WWSB reports, it?s a class that has students going out for a sessions of go kart riding. And it's reportedly the only class of its kind in the entire country.

"All our high achieving math students, 8, 9 and 10th grades have been rewarded for their achievement with a day at the track," Physics of Motorsports instructor Frederick Hillier tells the station.

The course includes weekly trips to the local Anderson Race Park, which Hillier says will help motivate the students to further their physics studies.

"The physics program launches you in a great way into science but also into the motorsports path to where if you want to be you know an auto engineer or even a go kart engineer, it gets you a great start," senior and MSA Racing Team Crew Chief Lauren Hall told the station.

But yes, crunching those numbers and successfully completing the go kart class fulfills a Florida state requirement for chemistry of physics.

?They'll collect the data, they'll go back to school in the next class, and they'll calculate what the g-force was of their deceleration," Hillier said.

Spend time planning, visiting schools this spring | On College

By JOAN FRANKLIN
Mercer Island Reporter Columnist
January 23, 2013 ? Updated 3:26 PM?

Q: I want to know, how many schools should I visit over winter or spring break?

It is that time of year when families are planning trips with their juniors to see colleges. While I think there is great value in touring schools, especially when they are in session, I often shudder when families describe their plans for the week. I often get the feeling that families approach these visits as a marathon, with the end goal of being able to check off having seen 13 schools in six days. It reminds me of the days when I hopped by night train throughout Europe with few memories, but a lot of stamps on my passport.

Parents will tell me that they have coordinated their visits so that they can visit multiple schools each day, enabling them to go from Maine to Virginia in a week?s time. Having recently returned from touring colleges in Maine and Vermont, I was surprised how long it took to drive from one small liberal arts college to the next. Naively, they looked so close on a map, but I was not factoring in small country roads and having to stop just one more time to sample maple syrup. Frankly, after being in the car for hours on end, I was not as enthusiastic as I might have been if I had chosen to target only certain schools on my list.

Similarly, I cannot tell you how many times I hear from parents that their student refused to see the school once they had arrived because they are so burnt out. My own daughter at one point was so fried from college visits that she refused to leave the car because she had decided she did not like the college based on the cars in the admissions parking lot. Another family described how they had driven through a blizzard to see Dartmouth, only to have their daughter request to leave in 30 minutes because she did not like the tour guide.

I suggest that you try to visit only one college per day so that you have time to spend hours on the campus and in the town itself. Students often need time to digest what they have just seen and heard away from the campus for an hour or so. Sometimes they return after lunch, better rested and fed, to see the school in a new light. It is often not realistic to see every school on your list, especially if they are not on the West Coast. It is not unusual for me to hear about families who are touring the Northeast, visiting one Ivy League school after the next, because those are the schools they have heard of. I suggest that families highlight schools where their son or daughter stands a reasonably good chance of being admitted. Many students are undecided as to the size and the type of environment of the school they are looking for. In that case, it makes sense to see a wide variety of schools from large public universities to small liberal arts colleges in both cities and rural areas.

Before you visit, do call the admission office and check to see that they are offering informational sessions and tours on the day you will arrive. If necessary, register for these in advance and inquire as to whether they grant interviews. If you find yourself not having time to do an official tour, at least try to sign in at the admissions office and take a campus map so you can take an unofficial tour of the campus. In order to see more than just buildings, which you can often do online, I suggest that you eat at least one meal in the cafeteria, where you can usually find students all too happy to share their campus experience. While you are there, make sure to pick up a campus newspaper, browse the student union to see what campus events are being sponsored, visit the library and try to befriend an undergrad to see if he or she would be willing to show you a dorm room. If nothing else, consider this as a golden opportunity to spend some quality time with your high-schooler, who for once has your undivided attention.

The Benefits of Internet Marketing in Today's Business Landscape ...

January 29, 2013

Online advertising or internet marketing is the practice of promoting products or services over the internet. Customers will receive advertisements for the product or service typically via the following digital routes: search engine results, social media marketing and banner ads, blog and online classified advertisements, and spam or email advertising. The idea behind internet marketing is to send marketing messages and lure in customers without overdoing it or missing the mark. This article will explore ways in which internet marketing can hit the mark more often.

Pros and Cons of Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing, unlike marketing done on television or through newspapers, has the advantage of being instantly publishable. In addition, the information disseminated through internet marketing activities is virtually unlimited. With a newspaper or television commercial, you are oftentimes targeting one demographic in one particular place. With internet marketing, the advertisements not only hit more people but they are sometimes interactive advertisements that keep customers engaged.

To go Interactive?

More advertising is going interactive these days and it might prove harmful for business not to capitalize on this relatively new way to reach customers. What is interactive advertising? In the most basic sense, interactive advertising is marketing that interacts with the user?s motives or responses to deliver the best service in a timely fashion. For instance, sites like Amazon and Target are interactive in that both sites filter and arrange future searches based on the user?s preferences and purchasing habits. It?s often said that retaining a current customer is ten times less expensive than corralling in a new customer. This economic reality underscores the importance of streamlining interactive advertising to current customers.

One Size Fits Most

Research in internet marketing has shown that two strategies for marketing online pay off in the long run; those strategies are appealing to a specific interest and targeting individuals. The latter, also known as the one-to-one approach, is used in tandem with search engine optimization. With the one-to-one approach, advertisements are based around keywords typed into the search engine. For instance, searching for ?foot locker? might warrant an advertisement for Nike shoes. The one-to-one approach is tremendously time and cost efficient and it often furnishes the customer with just what s/he needs!

Specific Interest Marketing

Another approach, though, is appealing to a specific interest. The specific interest approach focuses on an entire demographic?s shared characteristics, like age or geography. Rather than focusing on one individual, specific interest internet marketing narrows down the advertising to a collective interest or pursuit. For example, internet browsers in Nevada might be presented with Carls Jr. fast food advertisements, which wouldn?t be useful to someone in New England. The specific interest marketing is subtly similar to one-to-one marketing except that specific interest marketing focuses on larger groups of people, perhaps without particular regard to spending habits of those people.

Future of Marketing

Internet marketing is superior to other forms of marketing because it is cost, energy, and resource efficient. There are also more options with internet marketing: internet marketing can solicit millions of people at once or only a few potential customers. With more people flocking to the internet for goods and services, now is the time to incorporate internet marketing into your business.

Microsoft Office 2013, Office 365 Home Premium available now; 365 for business coming later

Microsoft Office 2013, Office 365 Home Premium available now; 365 for business coming later

Until now, we've known almost all there is to know about Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 365: we got hands-on with the new features last summer, and the company has even confirmed pricing. The only thing we weren't sure of was the exact on-sale date, but even that got leaked when a Canadian retailer put up a pre-order page indicating the two products would ship January 29th. Well, what do you know? Today is January 29th and sure enough, Office 2013 is on sale, along with the subscription service Office 365. To be clear, while every version of the boxed software is now out, 365 is only being offered to consumers; the business version will arrive later, on February 27th.

For now, Office 365 Home Premium is priced at $99.99 for an annual subscription, with licenses to install the suite on up to five PCs and Macs at once. There's also a "University" version for college students and faculty, which costs $79.99 for a four-year plan. Either way, the sub includes 20GB of SkyDrive storage, which is to say if you previously only had 7GB of space, your limit will now get bumped to 20 gigs. (In other words, people grandfathered into 25GB don't get an additional 20 gigabytes.) Of course, you can always deactivate a particular machine through Office.com if you need to free up a license. Naturally, too, as a part of the subscription you'll always have the most recent version. That means Office 2013 for Windows users; Office for Mac 2011 if you're on OS X. That last piece is a bit of a bummer, for sure, but for what it's worth Microsoft has said a new Mac product is in the works, and that subscribers will get it as part of a future software update.

If you'd rather buy the software outright, you can do that today too. At the low end, there's Office 2013 Home and Student 2013 ($139), which comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Home and Business adds Outlook for $219, while the top-of-the-line Professional package includes all of the above along with Access and Publisher for $399. Remember, though: these come with only one user license, and you don't get any complimentary cloud storage or upgrades to future versions. It's your money, obviously, but it seems clear to us that Microsoft has gone out of its way to make its Office 365 service the more attractive option. So, you might want to think long and hard about how much owning your software really means to you before going the old-fashioned route.

Microsoft Releases Office 365 Home Premium
Jan. 29, 2013
New consumer cloud service works across devices to help busy people simplify their lives and get more done.

NEW YORK - Jan. 29, 2013 - Microsoft Corp. today announced worldwide availability of Office 365 Home Premium, a reinvention of the company's flagship Office product line for consumers. Office 365 Home Premium is a cloud service designed for busy households and people juggling ever-increasing work and family responsibilities. The new offering includes the latest and most complete set of Office applications; works across up to five devices, including Windows tablets, PCs and Macs; and comes with extra SkyDrive storage and Skype calling - all for US$99.99 for an annual subscription, the equivalent of US$8.34 per month.

"Today's launch of Office 365 Home Premium marks the next big step in Microsoft's transformation to a devices and services business," said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. "This is so much more than just another release of Office. This is Office reinvented as a consumer cloud service with all the full-featured Office applications people know and love, together with impressive new cloud and social benefits."

Microsoft also announced it will now deliver many new features and services to the cloud first, transforming the company's traditional three-year release cycle. Now, new features and services stream to subscribers as soon as they are ready, keeping subscribers always up to date while eliminating the hassles of upgrading.

"This is a major leap forward," said Kurt DelBene, president of the Microsoft Office Division. "People's needs change rapidly, and Office 365 Home Premium will change with them."

Simultaneously, Microsoft today released Office 365 University for college or university students, faculty and staff at a price of just US$79.99 for a four-year subscription - the equivalent of US$1.67 per month. Globally, the company also released updated versions of the traditional Office suite: Office Home and Student 2013, Office Home and Business 2013 and Office Professional 2013. Office 365 for businesses will be released globally with new capabilities on Feb. 27.

Twitter gives user info to US 69 percent of time

17 hrs.

Twitter says it turns over user data to government agencies in the U.S. in 69 percent of the requests made for such information, according to a new transparency report released by the microblogging site.

"It's our continued hope that providing greater insights into this information helps in at least two ways: first, to raise public awareness about these invasive requests; second, to enable policy makers to make more informed decisions," writes Jeremy Kessel,?Twitter's manager of legal policy, on the site's blog Monday.?

Last year, 81 percent "of all information requests we received worldwide originated from the U.S.," Kessel said.

In 2012 in the U.S.,?there were 815 "user information requests" about 1,145 Twitter?user accounts, and for 69 percent of those requests "some or all information" was given to the agencies. The majority of the "requests" ? 60 percent ? were subpoenas, 19 percent were search warrants and 11 percent were court orders for the information.

Another 10 percent are requests are from law enforcement agencies that aren't in any of the categories above, but might be "exigent?emergency disclosure requests?and other requests received for user information without valid legal process,"?Twitter?says?in?its?transparency?report.

When?Twitter?gets?such?requests,?it?notifies?affected?users?about?them,?"unless?we're?prohibited?by?law."

And?when?requests?for?information?are?not?complied?with,?it's?because?Twitter?"may?seek?to?narrow?requests?that?are?overly?broad,"?or?fail?to?identify?a?Twitter?account.?"In?other?cases,?users?may?have?challenged?the?requests?after?we've?notified?them."

(You can see here how the U.S. stacks up against other countries when it comes to requests for Twitter user information, but no other country even comes close.)

Google, which has been doing transparency reports longer than Twitter, is comparable in terms of the user data turned over to government agencies, about 66 percent, as of Dec. 31, 2012.

This is Twitter's second transparency report. Its first was issued last July, and at that time, Kessel wrote, "We've received more government requests in the first half of 2012 ...?than in the entirety of?2011."

Twitter also shared the number of requests to take-down tweets that allegedly violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. There were 3,268 such requests in 2012; Twitter complied in 53 percent of the cases:

Twitter says that it "may not comply with with every request" for several reasons, including "takedown notices that fail to provide sufficient information for us to locate material on Twitter."?

The site also gets a "large number of misfiled, non-copyright complaints" through its?Web form.

"Over the course of 2012, we saw a steady increase in government requests (with a slight decline in copyright takedown notices)," Twitter said in its report, which should serve as a warning of sorts?to those using the social media site. "All signs suggest that these government inquiries will continue to climb into the foreseeable future."

Bilayer structural makeup of biomembranes

The lipid molecules of membranes, also known as phospholipids, are composed of two elements: A hydrophilic head and two long-chain fatty acids. The molecules form a bilayer in the membrane, with all of the heads pointing outwards and the fatty acid chains hanging in a zip-like interlay position.

Biomembranes are constantly reorganized or renewed, for example whenever cells divide. The cell is constantly creating new phospholipids that have to align themselves which they do in both layers of the biomembrane. However, cells only produce phospholipids on one side of the biomembrane. From there, they need to be transported to the other half of the bilayer.

A helping hand through the membrane

The problem is that the hydrophilic and lipophilic parts of the molecule repel each other. "The molecules can anchor themselves in one of the two membrane layers with their lipophilic tail," explains Prof. Dieter Langosch of the TUM Chair of Biopolymer Chemistry. "Translocation to the second layer is not possible because the hydrophilic heads cannot pass through the lipophilic fatty acid chains."

The key to establishing order in the membranes lies in enzymes that transport the molecules to their correct location in the "second layer". Scientists have been searching for such enzymes known as flippases for many years. But now Prof. Langosch and his team have made a breakthrough. They experimented with synthetic peptides, which transport phospholipids through the membrane.

A clever trick

In this process, the researchers came across an indirect transport mechanism. The peptides span both layers of the membrane and are able to bind to individual phospholipids. Prof. Langosch explains: "When the peptides bind the molecules, the surrounding membrane is briefly destabilized. The new phospholipids use this opportunity to slip through the barrier of the first lipid layer and flip to the second layer of the membrane."

The researchers now have a clear idea of how flippases work. "Our peptides stretch through the membrane like a corkscrew. If this "alpha-helix" has dynamic elements, it can bind to phospholipids," says Prof. Langosch. "This model will help us to detect the flippases."

Suggs, Webb, stand out at Super Bowl media day

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Scenes and observations from the NFL's annual Super Bowl media day ? interviews with players and team personnel from the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers on the field at the Superdome:

___

Terrell Suggs stood up, threw down his microphone, kicked over his chair with a back heel as he stepped down from his podium, and then kicked over a cooler.

Onlookers laughed, satisfied that the Baltimore Ravens' mischievous linebacker had properly punctuated the frenetic, free-for-all known as Super Bowl media day.

Suggs plays a central role in one of the more intimidating defenses in the NFL, and at least some of the conversation involved football, and what it would take to slow down San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick in Sunday's NFL championship game.

But media day is never just about football, not even when the players are interviewing each other.

Posing as a reporter, defensive end Arthur Jones asked Suggs which staple of Louisiana cuisine he preferred, gumbo or jambalaya.

"That's a good question, and I'm glad you asked that, Arthur," Suggs said. "Definitely gumbo."

Suggs also was asked if he is the best dancer in the locker room: "No way. 'Be Nasty,' (safety) Bernard Pollard ? he's definitely the best dancer. And I think if we get this done come Sunday, you all will get to see a good dose of it."

And maybe even get a song from Suggs. He wasn't shy about serenading everyone with a rendition of Meatloaf's "I Would Do Anything For Love," moments after he took his seat behind the microphone.

___

Katherine Webb credits a couple of camera shots of her watching the BCS national title game in Miami with landing her at the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Otherwise known as Miss Alabama USA and the girlfriend of Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron, Webb has been hired by TV's "Inside Edition" to be its game correspondent.

"It's so exciting and absolutely crazy at the same time. It's happened so fast. I feel like I'm living on a plane but it's a great journey," said Webb, who was making her first trip to New Orleans for her first Super Bowl.

The 23-year-old Webb has been working on a fledgling modeling and acting career in Los Angeles.

"It's kind of funny how everything kind of lines up to me being at this point," said Webb, explaining that it all started with meeting McCarron while at home in Alabama late last year.

She was hired to interview players and coaches during media day, but wound up being interviewed herself. A colleague had to cut it short a few times, apologetically explaining that Webb had a job to do.

She said she prepped for the job.

"A.J. is interviewed all the time, so it's kind of cool to ask him, 'What do I need to ask and what do I need to stay away from? What annoys players the most to be asked?'" she said.

Webb created a buzz at the BCS game when she was caught on camera and play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger enthusiastically remarked that quarterbacks "get all the good-looking women." ESPN later apologized for the comments.

Webb, however, never thought an apology was necessary.

"Everybody seems to think that I'm offended and I'm not at all," she said. "I appreciate it. I appreciate the fact that he notices a beautiful woman. Women need to be told their beautiful more often. I took no offense to it."

___

For the second year in a row, Super Bowl media day was open to fans for the price of a $25 ticket. They were allowed to sit in sections of seats along the sideline with good views of players on the field, and paid attendance was 5,479, according to NFL spokesman Michael Signora.

When fans walked in, they were given gift bags that included small radios so they could listen to interviews. Other items were mostly product samples from sponsors, including chips and laundry detergent.

Among the fans were John Grimsley and Lisa Wyatt of Baltimore, sitting together a few rows from the field wearing purple jerseys with the No. 52 of star Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis. They said the ticket price was worth it.

"This is a very rare experience," said Grimsley, who has Ravens season tickets and tickets to Sunday's big game. "I've never been to anything like this. To be able to see all the Ravens being interviewed, to see some of these guys up close, you don't really get to see that when you go to the games. They're there and then they're gone."

___

The NFL says 5,205 reporters from 24 countries have credentials for the game, and some chose to work in costume at media day.

There was a correspondent from the Nickelodeon television network dressed as a super hero called Pick Boy, wearing black tights with a cape and trim of fluorescent orange and green.

Pick Boy approached 49ers practice squad linebacker Nate Stupar, asking him if he wanted to race. Stupar declined, saying he wasn't about to risk pulling any muscles for something like that.

"I would say that's the first time I got interviewed by a guy with a cape on," Stupar said. "It's entertainment and it's going to be fun to be around the entire week."

Univision radio play-by-play announcer Rafael Hernandez Brito wore a Spanish-style wrestling mask for part of the session.

TV Azteca reporter Jose Marquez Zamora looked like a rodeo clown, with his painted face, round rubber nose and long, pointy shoes covered with light blue sequins. He said he was, in fact, dressed as a typical clown in Monterrey, Mexico, and wasn't concerned about whether his interview subjects took him seriously.

"I don't make interviews about serious stuff," he said. "I only have fun with the players, so our viewers in Mexico get interesting stuff and also get entertained."

Niners offensive lineman Alex Boone was asked about his hair style, which looks similar to a mohawk ? Boone calls it a rhino hawk ? and whether he had the best hair on the team.

"Absolutely. I think I get it from my mom's side," Boone said. "My mom's got great hair."

He added that he never in his career had been asked about his hair in a football interview, and then reflected on how the range of questions on media day truly sets it apart from a typical NFL interview session.

"Weird. Very weird. A lot of questions coming this way and some of them aren't football-related, which creeps me out a little bit," Boone said. "But it's a trip, and I'm excited to be here."

___

When players and coaches were asked to play along with a joke about the growing influence of social media in everyday communication, results were mixed and appeared to expose the generation gap between some players and coaches.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and others were asked to answer some questions in hash tags only. The tags, which might look like (hash)SuperBowl on the website Twitter, are used to help social media users identify trendy topics.

"That would be very challenging to me," Harbaugh said. "I don't know the hash tag world that well. I don't have one. I don't have a Tweeter (sic). I'm not real good at that."

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker was more cooperative, answering several questions in a row about his Super Bowl experience as a rookie with, "Hash tag, awesome."

Get your superzoom on with Nikon's Coolpix P520 and L820

Get your superzoom on with Nikon's Coolpix P520 and L820

Oh, the superzoom camera -- it's not a compact and the lens doesn't twist off, but for one reason or another, this confused category has survived against the odds. So, if superzooms happen to be your shooter of choice, we've got some good news: Nikon's got a new pair to add to the pickins. For those with deeper pockets, the Coolpix P520 might be on order, with an 18.1-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and a 3.2-inch vari-angle (tilt-and-swivel) VGA display. There's a 42x f/3.0-5.8, 24-1,000mm lens on board, netting you quite a bit of range. It also offers 1080/60i HD video shooting and WiFi compatibility through the optional ($60) WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter.

Casual photographers might be more taken with the Coolpix L820, which still packs a fair amount of punch, thanks to a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, a 30x, 22.5-675mm zoom lens with optical VR, and 1080p video shooting. Unlike its more feature-packed sibling, though, this model uses AA batteries -- which you might be into if international travel is on the agenda (those disposable cells are available worldwide, which helps if you aren't keen on plugging in a charger). Both offerings will hit stores in late February, with the P520 available for $450 and the L820 shipping for $280, in your choice of black or red finishes.

Pfizer fourth-quarter results top forecast, gives cautious 2013 view

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc on Tuesday reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results, helped by rebounding sales in emerging markets, but the drugmaker forecast that 2013 profits would be weaker than Wall Street has estimated.

Pfizer, the largest U.S. drugmaker, said quarterly earnings quadrupled to $6.32 billion, or 86 cents per share, as it recorded a gain from selling its nutritional products business to Swiss food groups Nestle SA for about $12 billion in November.

In the year-earlier quarter, it posted a profit of $1.44 billion, or 19 cents per share.

Excluding special items, Pfizer earned 47 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts, on average, expected 44 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Global company sales fell 7 percent to $15.1 billion, hurt by generic competition for its Lipitor cholesterol fighter, but came in well above expectations of $14.37 billion.

Pfizer forecast full-year 2013 earnings of $2.20 to $2.30 per share, excluding special items. The average analyst estimate was $2.29 per share, according to Thomson Reuters.

"Pfizer's 2013 forecast is a little lighter than expected, but won't cause me to lose sleep," said Judson Clark, an analyst with Edward Jones.

He said the forecast would have been 2 cents per share higher, and roughly in line with expectations, if not for expenses related to a planned spinoff of its animal health business into a new company called Zoetis.

Clark said he has a "buy" rating on the Pfizer shares because of its strong pipeline of experimental drugs.

Pfizer is on a roll with recent approvals of a handful of new products that could help it rebound from plunging sales of Lipitor.

They include a blood clot preventer called Eliquis - co-developed with Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and approved in late December - that analysts believe could eventually claim annual sales of $5 billion or more. Xeljanz, a pill for rheumatoid arthritis deemed likely to generate annual sales of more than $2 billion, was approved by U.S. regulators in November.

Pfizer's shares have risen 26 percent in the last year, compared with 19 percent for the ARCA Pharmaceutical Index of large U.S. and European drugmakers, largely because of the turnaround in its long-anemic drug pipeline.

Investors have also warmed to Pfizer because of its ongoing efforts to spin off non-pharmaceutical operations and return much of the proceeds to investors in the form of bigger dividends and repurchases of common shares.

On the heels of selling its nutrition business, Pfizer is expected within days to raise more than $2.2 billion through an initial public offering that will separate its animal health unit into a new company called Zoetis.

Pfizer in November approved an additional $10 billion in share repurchases, after having repurchased almost $6 billion in shares in 2012 through an earlier $10 billion authorization.

Fourth quarter company sales in emerging markets rose 17 percent to $2.65 billion, in contrast with a slight decline in the prior quarter.

Global Lipitor sales plunged 71 percent in the quarter to $584 million, but that was offset by strong sales of other medicines.

Sales of its Prevnar vaccine against pneumococcal bacteria jumped 19 percent to $993 million, helping ease concerns about weak sales in earlier quarters. Sales of Celebrex, used to ease pain from arthritis, rose 12 percent to $750 million.

Pfizer's shares rose 2.3 percent, or about 63 cents, to $27.45 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Barnes & Noble exec plans more store closings

(AP) ? Barnes & Noble plans to continue to shrink its store base.

The head of Barnes & Noble's retail group, Mitchel Klipper, said in an interview published Monday in The Wall Street Journal that the company will have 450 to 500 stores in a decade. That's down from about 689 currently.

Klipper said the chain plans to close about 20 stores a year over the period.

The largest traditional U.S. bookstore has been facing tough competition from online retailers and discounters that sell books and has been focusing on its Nook tablet, e-book reader and e-book business for growth.

A spokeswoman for Barnes & Noble said Klipper's remarks don't mark any change in its store closing plan.

"We have historically closed approximately 15 stores per year for the past 10 years," said spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating. Some closings are due to the fact that stores are unprofitable and others are stores moving to better locations.

Although Barnes & Noble has for the most part stopped opening new stores in the past several years, Keating said New York-based Barnes & Noble opened two new prototype stores in 2012 and plans to test other prototypes in 2013.

"The company's management is fully committed to the retail concept for the long term," Keating said.

In addition to its traditional bookstores, Barnes & Noble operates 674 college bookstores.

Its shares fell 15 cents, or 1.1 percent, to close at $13.02 Monday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $10.45 to $26.

Strategy Analytics: Android and Apple iOS Capture a Record 92 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments in Q4 2012

Boston, MA ? January 28, 2013 ? According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually to reach 217 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Android and Apple iOS together accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, ?Global smartphone shipments grew 38 percent annually from 157.0 million units in Q4 2011 to 217.0 million in Q4 2012. Global smartphone shipments for the full year reached a record 700.1 million units in 2012, increasing robustly from 490.5 million units in 2011. Global shipment growth slowed from 64 percent in 2011 to 43 percent in 2012 as penetration of smartphones began to mature in developed regions such as North America and Western Europe.?

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, ?We estimate 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q4 2012, nearly doubling from 80.6 million units in Q4 2011. Android?s share of the global smartphone market has surged from 51 percent to 70 percent over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake. Almost half-a-billion Android smartphones were shipped in total worldwide during 2012. Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time. Android?s challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, Blackberry, Firefox and Tizen.?

Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, added, ?Apple grew 29 percent annually and shipped 47.8 million smartphones worldwide for 22 percent marketshare in Q4 2012, dipping slightly from 24 percent a year earlier. Combined together, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012. The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs.?

Preliminary FEMA flood zone maps add 35,000 NYC buildings to ...

The corner of 34th Street and 1st Street in Manhattan floods during rains from Hurricane Sandy, Oct. 29, 2012 in New York City.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

Some 35,000 buildings and homes have been added to flood zones in parts of New York City, according to preliminary maps released Monday by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. More of these maps will be released in late February for Manhattan and other parts of city where the data is still being analyzed.?

The numbers emerged after the release earlier in the day of FEMA?s advisory flood maps for parts of the city, increasing the areas falling into 100-year flood zones or areas with the potential for destructive high speed waves along coastlines, said agency spokesman Dan Watson. More maps will be released for other parts of the city, including Manhattan, in late February, he said.?

The official maps will be released in the summer, but the preliminary ones for hard-hit areas like Staten Island and Queens are intended to give those who are rebuilding a head start. Sandy struck Oct. 29, leaving about 20,000 residential buildings in the city with some damage or disruption to their utilities.

?It can inform building back stronger and smarter with the recovery,? Watson said. ?And honestly it will also help save lives and property in the future ? because we?ve seen areas where folks have elevated or used other forms of mitigation and ? they got wet but there wasn?t as much damage as a result of it.??

The maps reflect base flood elevations and will likely increase insurance rates for those who are newly included in the flood-prone zones. Those who are now in the ?A Zones? -- or 100-year flood zones, where a flooding event has a one percent probability of occurring in any given year -- and who have a federally-backed mortgage will now be required to get flood insurance, Watson said.

Some property owners may also have to elevate their buildings or homes, likely setting ground floors ground floors 3 to 6 feet higher than zoning rules previously required, according to The Associated Press. The maps have to be adopted by communities, which can appeal parts of them, Watson said.

Congress has already passed $9.7 billion in additional borrowing authority for the National Flood Insurance Program to help pay Sandy claims from homeowners in New York and New Jersey.?The Senate on Monday night approved a $50.5 billion emergency spending bill to aid people in New York and New Jersey who are trying to rebuild their homes and businesses.

Hard-hit communities were just beginning to figure out what these initial maps mean for them. In Breezy Point, a private cooperative in the city?s southern Queens Borough heavily damaged by the storm, leaders said they needed to study the maps before offering guidance: ?Keep in mind that the DOB (Department of Buildings) and City still need to make decisions regarding building criteria and if it will change.?
