(AP Photo/Luca Bruno)

(AP) ? Strong demand for short-term Italian government debt on Wednesday pushed the country's borrowing costs lower and suggested investors have become less jittery about an imminent default by the eurozone's third-largest economy.

Italy raised euro10.7 billion ($14 billion) in a pair of auctions at sharply lower rates than those it was forced to pay just a month ago when investor concerns over the ability of the country to service its massive debts became particularly acute and effectively prompted a change in government.

The sharp decline in Italy's borrowing costs could be a signal that commercial banks from the 17 countries that use the euro diverted some of the money they tapped from emergency loans from the European Central Bank last week to buy the bonds of heavily indebted governments. It may also suggest rising investor confidence in Italy's recent efforts to reduce its long-term debt through a variety of austerity measures.

The Bank of Italy said the average yield on its euro9 billion ($11.8 billion) six-month bill offering was 3.251 percent, half the 6.504 percent rate it had to pay at the equivalent auction last month. And an auction of two-year bonds, which raised euro1.7 billion ($2.2 billion), also saw the yield fall to 4.853 percent from 7.814 percent last month.

"This is an encouraging development, suggesting that the Italian sovereign debt market has pulled back from the dangerous situation in late November," said Raj Badiani, a senior economist at IHS Global Insight.

"The calmer environment reflects the passing of additional austerity measures and some welcome progress on the structural reform agenda, coupled with the ECB's decision to provide additional cheap financing to Italian banks," Badiani added.

After initially cheering the auction results, sentiment in markets deteriorated sharply in risk-averse trading following a weaker than anticipated performance on Wall Street.

While Italy's FTSE MIB fell in line with other stock markets, the euro slid to $1.2938, its lowest level since Jan. 11 and the yield on Italy's benchmark ten-year bonds pushed back towards the 7 percent mark that is widely considered to be unsustainable in the long-run. Further insights into the level of demand for Italy's ten-year bonds will emerge in an auction Thursday.

Italy is the eurozone's third-largest economy and is considered too big to save under the eurozone's current bailout funds. Markets have grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion). Next year alone, Italy has some euro330 billion ($431 billion) of debt to refinance.

Mario Monti, the country's new premier, got parliamentary approval last week for more spending cuts and tax increases intended to save the country from financial disaster. One of the most controversial aspects of the austerity package is reform of Italy's bloated pension system.

As well as possibly indicating increased confidence that Monti's efforts will keep the country's finances on a sustainable path, Wednesday's auctions could also have been supported as well by a large infusion of credit to eurozone banks last week from the European Central Bank. A week ago, 523 banks took the opportunity to swell their coffers by euro489 billion ($639 billion), the largest ECB loan operation in the 13-year history of the euro.

There has been speculation that the stronger banks might use the cheap, long-term loans ? on which the current interest rate is 1 percent ? to purchase government bonds that carry higher interest rates and profit from the difference.

That could support both government and bank finances. But it would run contrary to efforts by many banks to lower their exposure to bonds issued by heavily indebted governments.

While some banks may be using the money they got from the ECB to buy up government debt, many others appear to have opted for a much safer option ? depositing their new cash back with the central bank. Figures Wednesday showed eurozone banks parked a record euro452 billon ($591 billion) overnight at the bank Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of euro411.80 billion set only Monday.

Russian court rejects proposed ban of Hindu text (AP)

MOSCOW ? A Russian court decided Wednesday not to ban a religious text central to the global Hare Krishna movement, rejecting claims that the text is "extremist" and ending a case that has angered Hindus around the world.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said it appreciated "this sensible resolution of a sensitive issue."

Prosecutors in the Siberian city of Tomsk had argued that the Russian translation of "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" promotes "social discord" and hatred toward nonbelievers, causing an outcry in India, where many considered the proposed ban a violation of the rights of Hindus in Russia.

The text is a combination of the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism's holiest scriptures, and commentary by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which is often called the Hare Krishna movement.

The prosecutors had asked the court to include the book on the Federal List of Extremist Materials, which bans more than 1,000 texts, including Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and books distributed by the Jehovah's Witness and Scientology movements.

Alexander Shakhov, a lawyer for Hare Krishna devotees in Tomsk, said the group is satisfied with the court's decision.

"This judge's decision shows that Russia is becoming a truly democratic society," Shakhov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. "We are very excited about this victory."

Yury Pleshakov, a spokesman for the group in Moscow, said the book in question has existed in Russia for 25 years and has never inspired violence or extremist activity.

"On the contrary, this book teaches humane attitude towards all living beings," Pleshakov said.

The trial, which began in June, followed this year's ban on the construction of a Hare Krishna village in Tomsk and was based on an assessment by professors at Tomsk University, who concluded that "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" includes strong language against nonbelievers and promotes religious hatred and discrimination on the basis of gender, race, nationality and language.

The ruling came a day after Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna met with Alexander Kadakin, Russia's ambassador to India, and urged the Russian government to resolve the issue. Indian officials had last week appealed to high-level Russian authorities to intervene.

The Tomsk court had postponed the decision from Dec. 19, when protesters gathered outside the Russian consulate in Kolkata, and the speaker of India's lower house of parliament adjourned the body for several hours after members began shouting in anger over the proposed ban.

After hearing further testimony from academic experts on Wednesday, the judge ruled that the prosecutors' claims were unfounded.

The Bhagavad Gita "is not merely a religious text, but one of the defining treatises of Indian thought," said Indian Ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra in a statement. "The Bhagavad Gita has circulated freely across the world for centuries and there is not a single instance of it having encouraged extremism."

The Indian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday sought to soothe over any tensions.

"We appreciate this sensible resolution of a sensitive issue and are glad to put this episode behind us," ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said in a statement. "This demonstrates yet again that the people of India and Russia have a deep understanding of each other's cultures and will always reject any attempt to belittle our common civilizational values."

The Russian Foreign Ministry had insisted the Tomsk court was not taking issue with core Hindu scripture itself, but rather with the author's commentary and poor translation in "Bhagavad Gita As It Is."

"I would like to emphasize that this is not about 'Bhagavad Gita,' a religious philosophical poem, which forms part of the great Indian epic Mahabharata and is one of the most famous pieces of the ancient Hindu literature," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a briefing in Moscow last week, adding that the book was first published in Russian in 1788.

Still, followers of the Hare Krishna movement in Russia saw the proposed ban as a result of continued intolerance of minority religions by the Russian Orthodox Church. Pleshakov estimates there are at least 150,000 Hare Krishna devotees in Russia.

"The current problem is, above all, the misuse of the law on combating extremism," Pleshakov said. "It is used to search for enemies where they can not even be defined."

In 2005, a Russian Orthodox archbishop asked the mayor of Moscow to ban the construction of a proposed Hare Krishna temple, calling the Hindu deity Krishna "an evil demon, the personified power of hell opposing God," according to Interfax. The temple was later allowed in a Moscow suburb.

US criticises China, Japan on currencies

Pakistan News.Net
Wednesday 28th December, 2011

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration has criticized China and Japan for their currency exchange rate policies, while once again stopping short of labeling Beijing as a manipulator.

In its semi-annual currency report released Tuesday, the Treasury Department, criticized Japan's two latest currency interventions, while stating that China's moves to allow yuan to appreciate remains incomplete.

"China's longstanding pattern of reserve accumulation, the persistence of its current-account surplus and the incomplete appreciation, especially given rapid productivity growth in the traded-goods sector, indicate that the real exchange rate of the renminbi is persistently misaligned and remains substantially undervalued," the report said.

The Treasury Department said it would continue to press Beijing for greater exchange-rate flexibility, as well as level playing field for foreign companies.

There is mounting criticism of the trade advantage China has been garnering in global markets by keeping the yuan artificially low to boost exports.

A major US concern is the rising trade imbalance
with China.

The U.S. trade deficit with China reached o a record $273.1 billion in 2010 from about $226.9 billion in the previous year. This year, from January to October trade deficit with China is already around $245.5 billion.

"While China's real exchange rate has appreciated, the process of appreciation remains incomplete," the report points out.

The yuan has appreciated nearly 12 per cent against the U.S. dollar on an inflation-adjusted basis since June 2010.

The Peterson Institute for International Economics recently estimated the yuan was undervalued by 24 percent against the dollar, down from 28 percent earlier in the year. The change is due Beijing's policy of gradual currency appreciation and higher Chinese inflation, the think tank feels.

The report has also targeted Tokyo for its solo yen-selling interventions in August and October that followed a joint Group of 7 action in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

"The unilateral Japanese interventions were undertaken when exchange market conditions appeared to be operating in an orderly manner and volatility in the yen-dollar exchange rate was lower than, for example, the euro-dollar market," the report said.

In contrast to the post-earthquake joint G7 intervention in March, the United States did not support these interventions, the Treasury has pointed out, urging Tokyo to pursue reforms to revive its domestic economy rather than try to influence the exchange rate.

Japan has repeatedly said it would intervene to stop what it termed excess volatility.

On Sunday Japan and China had formalized a financial agreement for direct trading of their currencies, instead of using the dollar as intermediary. China is Japan's biggest trade partner with annual two-way trade of close to $350 billion, and as part of the agreement Japan will also apply to buy Chinese bonds next year.

Presenting the report to Congress on international economic and exchange rate policies, the Treasury has assured that it will
"closely monitor the pace of appreciation and press for policy changes that yield greater exchange rate flexibility, a level playing field, and a sustained shift to domestic demand-led growth."

The U.S. Senate this year passed a bill that would require the administration to slap penalties on Chinese imports if it fails to adopt market-based exchange rates. But due to lack of support in the lower chamber it is unlikely to become law.

Beijing has in the past warned the United States not to "politicize" the currency issue.

Utility customers purchase over 1 million energy efficient CFL bulbs

SCE&G?s ENERGY STAR? Lighting Program continues to provide energy efficient savings as more than 1 million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) have been purchased in 2011. The program is currently offering consumers instant discounts of up to $3 per bulb at participating retailers throughout SCE&G?s service territory.

?

?It?s great to see more residential customers switch to CFL bulbs,? said Nakeeah Garland, ENERGY STAR? lighting incentives program manager at SCE&G. ?This simple switch is an easy ? and effective ? way for customers to save money and energy year round.?

?

CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer. On average, a single CFL bulb can save more than $40 in electricity costs over its lifetime.

?

?Using CFLs instead of standard incandescent bulbs can add up to real savings for customers,? said Garland. ?Given that the average household has approximately 40 light fixtures, CFLs can save customers as much as $1,600 over the lifetime of the bulbs.?

?

Available for lighting options throughout the home, including recessed can lights, bathroom vanities and three way lamps, CFLs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Many retailers and other entities provide recycling stations for CFLs, making the option to switch and save easier than ever before.

?

The ENERGY STAR? Lighting Program is just one of SCE&G?s EnergyWise programs that provide rebates and incentives, as well as tips and ideas on ways in which customers can be energy wise year round. To learn more, including how to properly recycle CFLs, visit www.sceg.com/energywise. ???

Emory University GPA and Test Score Graph

Fewer than a third of Emory University applicants get accepted. To get in, you're going to need grades and test scores that are well above average. In the scattergram above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that most successful applicants had averages in the "A" range, SAT scores of about 1800 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 26 or higher. A significant number of applicants had 4.0 GPAs. Clearly the higher your grades and test scores, the better your chance of an acceptance letter.

Note that there are a significant number of red and yellow dots (rejected and waitlisted students) hidden behind the green and blue. Many students who had grades and test scores that were on target for Emory did not get in. Note also that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades below the norm. This is because Emory, like many of the country's most selective colleges, has holistic admissions. The admissions folks are interested in much more than numerical data. Rigorous high school courses, strong extracurricular involvement, glowing letters of recommendation, and a winning application essay are all important parts of the admissions equation.

Analysis: Russia's Putin risks losing touch amid protests (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Vladimir Putin is looking increasingly out of touch in Russia after the opposition brought tens of thousands of people out onto the streets of Moscow for the second time in two weeks to demand a parliamentary election be re-run.

But the looming New Year holiday in Russia means there is likely to be a pause in the biggest opposition protests since he rose to power 12 years ago and he will hope they will now at least temporarily lose momentum.

The protesters say they are tired of his domination of Russia after eight years as president and now four as prime minister, and suspect the December 4 election, won by his United Russia party, was rigged.

First Putin dismissed the protesters as chattering monkeys financed from abroad, then he backed President Dmitry Medvedev's proposal for gradual political reform and later the 59-year-old leader had a former KGB spy appointed as Kremlin chief of staff.

The gulf between Putin and many of his people has convinced many that he has lost his popular touch and is refusing to take the protests as seriously as many of his closest allies do as he prepares to reclaim the presidency in an election in March.

"They do not understand," one person close to policy makers said of Putin and Medvedev. "One is weak and the other does not want to listen, though people have tried to explain the seriousness of the situation."

That could bode badly for the long-term stability of the world's biggest country and energy producer.

Opponents say Putin's inner circle is a small group of former KGB spies, businessmen and Kremlin officials who have little empathy with the Internet-savvy generation of younger, urban Russians who have come out onto the streets this month.

But Putin's portrayal of the protesters as pawns financed by a foreign power has also contrasted with the conclusions drawn by some of the other men at his court.

Kremlin deputy chief of staff Vladislav Surkov, who helped Putin craft his tightly controlled political system, warned on Friday that some enemies wanted to provoke a revolution but that the protesters were among the best people in society.

PUTIN'S COURT

"The best part of our society, or rather the most productive part, is demanding respect," Surkov, one of Putin's most powerful advisers on domestic policy, told Izvestia. "You cannot simply swipe away their opinions in an arrogant way."

An even closer Putin ally, former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, joined Saturday's protest in Moscow, warning that Russia needed much more serious political reforms to ensure a stable development.

"I came today because I do not believe the elections were fair and I believe we need to hold an investigation and punish those responsible up to and including criminal responsibility," Kudrin, 51, told Reuters at the protest.

"There is a possibility today, without any sort of revolution, to make a transformation to ensure fair elections and real representation in parliament," said Kudrin, who helped Putin get his first job in the Kremlin in 1996.

But Putin has other powerful advisers too.

Nikolai Patrushev, the powerful head of the Russian security council and former head of the FSB state security service, said this month that Russia should impose "rational regulation" of the Internet.

Another former KGB spy, Sergei Ivanov, was appointed Kremlin chief of staff on Thursday and Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, a Putin ally, has voiced concern about the role played by the Internet in the Arab Spring revolts.

Patrushev, 60, Ivanov, 58, and Sechin, 51, are all old friends of Putin and though they may be divided by tactics and court politics, they are ultimately hardliners.

Medvedev, Russia's 46-year-old iPad-carrying president, may have more sense of the anger against Putin but he is weak, sources close to the situation said.

"Medvedev understands this all a little better because he is a person less prone to conspiratorial theories," said a source with close ties to the leadership, adding that Russia's leaders were hoping the protests would burn themselves out.

"Putin has realized his popularity is declining," the source said.

PUTIN'S POPULARITY

For Putin, who has used his popularity to justify his plan to run for the presidency in the March 4 presidential election, that may be a hard thing to accept.

Putin still remains Russia's most popular politician and though his ratings are high by Western standards, they are low according to Putin's own expectations.

Russia's biggest independent pollster, Levada-Center, said 63 percent of Russians approved of his activities as prime minister in a poll carried out on Dec 16-20.

But that is just three percentage points above the lowest level since August 2000, when he was dogged by the botched reaction to a naval disaster that killed all 118 crewmen aboard the submarine Kursk.

"They are worrying and they are nervous," said Mikhail Kasyanov, who served as prime minister under Putin for four years before joining the opposition. "And they really do have something to be worried and nervous about."

CHATTERING MONKEYS?

Putin seems intent on riding out the protests. While tens of thousands turned out for the second time on two weeks on Saturday, he is likely to take comfort from the fact that there was not a huge increase in the numbers.

Tens of thousands protested in cities across Russia on December 10. On Saturday, organizers said they had gathered 120,000 in Moscow though the police put the number at 30,000.

The truth may lie somewhere in between: Russia's Navaya Gazeta opposition newspaper said its reporters counted more than 102,000 while estimates from state news agency RIA put the crowd at about 56,000.

Putin appears to reason that even though the protests are much larger than any he has faced before, it is still a relatively small percentage of the population that is protesting in a country of more than 140 million.

He is counting on the support of the many millions in the provinces who regard him as the man who restored order to Russia after the chaos of the decade that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In a televised question and answer session with the Russian people, Putin used a reference to the chattering monkeys known as "Bandar Log" in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book to describe the protesters and said he thought the white ribbons which are the symbol of the election protests were condoms.

But Alexei Navalny, the most prominent leader of the divided opposition groups which refuse to negotiate with the Kremlin, turned Putin's comments back against the authorities.

"Hi all of you Bandar Logs and Internet hamsters: You were called Bandar Log but you came here today. But where is the chap who called us that?" Navalny, 35, told tens of thousands of people at the protest in Moscow's Sakharov Avenue.

Navalny's satire may excite the crowds and the thousands who read his blogs but there is still no leader of the fragmented opposition. As if to illustrate that, dozens of different leaders addressed the crowd in Moscow.

United or not, Navalny warned that there were enough people at the protest to take the Kremlin by force, though he quickly added that this was not the plan.

"If the authorities continue to cheat the people and thieves and if those two swindlers continue the usurpation of power - they have stolen it from the people - then the people will come and take it back because it is theirs by rights," he told Reuters.

So does he plan a revolution?

"It is not a revolution," he said. "The revolution, the illegal takeover of power, was implemented by Putin and Medvedev. Here there will be a legal return of power to the people."

Kobe Bryant: Desperate to Reconcile With Vanessa?

L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant is desperate to reconcile with estranged wife Vanessa Bryant, sources say. Whether she gives him the time of day or not is another story.

Vanessa filed for divorce from Kobe last weekend, but people close to the family say his two daughters, ages 8 and 5, are playing a major role in his bid to reconcile.

Kobe is said to be "deeply depressed" over the situation and is very concerned about how his little girls will handle growing up in two separate households.

The Nipples of Vanessa Bryant

Sounds nice and all, but Vanessa Bryant decided to pull the plug on the union after catching the NBA star in an extramarital affair, and it wasn't the first time.

Some have accused Vanessa of being a gold-digger, but they were married for 10 years - before Kobe was obscenely rich - and she stood by him in 2003.

That was when he was accused of raping a girl he cheated with. They toughed it out through that, but his current affair was apparently the last straw.

Bryant's family was unaware of Kobe's efforts but they hope he and Vanessa can find a way to get along in the future if only for the sake of the kids.

CAW Donates to 46 Food Banks Across Canada

December 20, 2011, 2:40 PM EST

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

The CAW is contributing $135,000 to food banks from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador, as part of an annual donation to ease hunger.

"The increasing use of food banks demonstrates the growing inequality in our society," said CAW President Ken Lewenza.

"In a nation that generates so much wealth for a privileged elite, there are so many more people and families who are not sharing in that prosperity. We must all ensure that no one is left behind and remember it's completely unacceptable that people go hungry in such a wealthy country during the holiday season or at any other time," Lewenza said.

A recent study shows that as of October 2011, 850,000 Canadians were relying on food banks, which is the second highest month on record. The reliance on food banks has steadily grown in recent years - especially since the first food bank in Canada opened its doors in 1981 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Here are some startling facts from a Food Banks Canada HungerCount survey in March 2011:

?- 93,085 people or 11 per cent of the total received help from a food bank for the first time during the survey period;
- food bank use in 2011 was 20 per cent higher than 2001;
- 38 per cent of those receiving food were children and youth under the age of 18.

Lewenza said a major reason for high levels of poverty is the loss of good paying, full time jobs. "We must all recognize that when you lose good paying jobs and bring in part-time precarious work, low paying jobs you're increasing the level of poverty," Lewenza said.

According to the Canadian Payroll Association, 57 per cent of Canadians state "they would be in financial difficulty if their pay cheque was delayed by a week."

In addition to the $135,000 donation, which comes from the CAW Social Justice Fund and CAW Council, many CAW local unions perform community work and provide additional financial help to local food banks.

Evernote "memory aid" apps recall people, meals (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? If you have trouble putting a name to a face, or remembering where you ate that delicious morsel of food you are craving - and you have an iPhone -- help is now at hand.

Evernote, designed as a memory-aid application for storing text, audio and visual notes across multiple mobile devices and desktop machines has launched two new features - the Evernote Hello and Evernote Food apps.

The aim of Evernote, first launched in 2008 and now used by about 20 million people worldwide, is to function as a "second brain" to give people a better memory, Phil Libin, Evernote chief executive said.

The Evernote Hello app aims to transform and modernize the concept of the historic alphabet-based address book, he said.

"Current technology for remembering people is very antiquated," Libin told Reuters in an interview at LeWeb, a conference in Paris where about 3,500 of the world's top digital experts and entrepreneurs from 60 countries meet each year to discuss the state of the tech industry.

"Your brain doesn't remember people alphabetically -- you remember them based on what they look like, when you met them and the context."

Evernote Hello requires users to swap phones and add their name into the other person's phone. Users are then prompted to hold the phone up so it can automatically take their picture and add it to their profile.

Evernote Hello can then send each person an email containing the new information. It also creates a record of where they met, a picture of the location, a map and the address.

"The idea is that instead of an address book I get a really visual way of remembering everyone I've met," Libin said.

"It remembers everything that's happened around that encounter based on location, time and keywords and it pulls together all the information into a context."

Once added to Evernote Hello, people are displayed within a mosaic of faces.

When it is tapped, a face becomes a profile showing a history of all interactions the two people have shared. It also shows other people who have participated in the same meetings, location information and items related to meetings from the user's Evernote account such as notes and photos.

The Evernote Food app allows users to track and record social events surrounding meals using pictures, location and text. It can also be used to document favorite recipes and share them on Facebook, Twitter and email. Users can also write restaurant reviews or plan diets.

"Evernote Food helps you remember all your best meal experiences," Libin said. "We are trying to make beautiful experiences around the most important things to remember."

Both Evernote Hello and Evernote Food are available free for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Was Shroud created in a flash? Claims rise again

Antonio Calanni / AP

The Shroud of Turin bears the faded image of what appears to be a Christlike figure. Italian researchers say they've come close to the shroud's coloration by blasting strips of linen with ultraviolet laser light.

By Alan Boyle

Italian researchers have resurrected the idea that the Shroud of Turin's mysterious image of a Christlike figure could only have been created by a powerful flash of light ? but skeptics still aren't buying it.

Scientists have tussled with believers, and with each other, over the origins of the centuries-old cloth for decades: Many believers think it's the true image of Jesus, left behind miraculously on his burial cloths after his resurrection. Analyses of the?Shroud's chemical makeup, as well as?radiocarbon dating of fiber?samples,?have led lots of researchers to conclude that the image was painted onto the cloth during the 14th century. But other researchers, sympathetic to the Shroud's cause, say those tests were faulty.

The Italian studies, conducted at the ENEA Research Center in Frascati, addresses a specific question in Shroud science: Could a burst of radiation have created the coloration seen on the linen? The answer is yes, although the results reported in the latest studies aren't a perfect match.?So does that mean?the Shroud image?could only have?been created by the flash of a miraculous resurrection? The answer is no, despite what you might read on the Web.

Five years of tests
"Sadly, we have seen many claims spread in the Web made by journalist/bloggers that discuss the content of a paper they never read,"?lead researcher Paolo Di Lazzaro told me today in an email. "It is obvious that a serious scientific work cannot prove any supernatural action. We have shown that the most advanced technology available today is unable to replicate all the characteristics of the Shroud image. As a consequence, we may argue it appears unlikely a forger may have done this image with technologies available in the Middle Ages or earlier. The probability the Shroud is a medieval fake is really low. In this sense, the Shroud image is still a scientific challenge."

Di Lazzaro and his colleagues?based their conclusions on five years of tests, using?an ultraviolet laser apparatus and strips of modern-day linen. They blasted the cloth with UV at different power levels, and reported that they "achieved a very superficial Shroud-like coloration of linen yarns in a narrow range of irradiation parameters." The?best effect depended on laser?pulses lasting less than 50 nanoseconds.

"These processes may have played a role in the generation of the body image on the Shroud of Turin," the researchers report.

They don't go so far as to claim a miracle. But the fact that UV laser blasters didn't exist in the 13th century, let alone?in Jesus' day, strongly implies that they suspect something out of the ordinary?was going on.

Live Poll

What do you think of the Shroud of Turin?

Di Lazzaro told me that the tests were not financed by ENEA, which is a government-sponsored research agency, and were conducted outside working hours. "The research was curiosity-driven, the attempt to replicate an image which is considered 'the impossible image' due to its very peculiar characteristics," he said.

Over the years, Di Lazzaro and his colleagues have published a long list of studies, including peer-reviewed papers?(see below). The latest studies were presented at a May conference in Frascati and published in November as an ENEA technical report (with a disclaimer saying that the contents didn't necessarily express?ENEA's opinion).?But they?didn't really get traction until this week, just in time for Christmas, thanks to a series of sensationalized British news reports.

Critiquing Shroud science
Shroud science, also?known as sindology,?usually percolates outside the scientific mainstream ? but every once in a while a sensational claim comes into the public spotlight. Joe Nickell, an investigator for the New York-based?Center for Inquiry, has been following sindology for decades. He noted that the Italian research revives a discussion going back to the 1980s, spearheaded by a group called the Shroud of Turin Research Project, or STURP.

"This is really nothing new,"?Nickell told me today. "This is a supposed vindication of STURP."

Nickell said Di Lazzaro and his colleagues started out with the assumption that the coloration on the Shroud couldn't have been created by applying pigment to the linen ? which runs counter to the conclusions drawn by other studies.?Starting out?with the idea that?the?human figure shown on the Shroud is an "impossible image" stacks the deck in favor of a miraculous explanation, he said.

"Making the assumption of a miracle is a really, really, really, really, really big assumption," Nickell said. "That it's done in the name of science is just astonishing."

Nickell?said the latest findings don't prove much of anything, even though?they're dressed up in high-tech tests.

"It is made up of whole cloth," he said. "The pro-Shroud people start with the answer, and then they have to get some scientific evidence to back this up."

From 2008: An American researcher says the Shroud of Turin might be the real burial cloth of Jesus after all.

Some folks would suggest that the Shroud of Turin is a valuable focus for faith, whether it's real or not. What do you think? How much value is there in studying the Shroud, and how much impact do scientifico-religious debates like this one have on your own thinking? Check out the Web links below, give it some thought, and add your comments.

Update for 4:15 p.m. ET: Di Lazzaro sent a follow-up email calling attention to?his group's publications, which I've added below, and he poses this question for Joe Nickell: "Was he (or anybody else) able to reproduce by chemical paint, acid and any other color a?depth of coloration which is 0.2 micrometer thick (that is, one-fifth of a thousandth of a millimeter)? We are talking of this, because on the Shroud, the image has a coloration depth so thin?that it is impossible to do with any kind of painting. I can quote peer-reviewed papers that show this is the coloration depth of the Shroud image.

"By the way, Nickell will be interested to know that using VUV photons we obtained this shallow coloration thickness," Di Lazzaro wrote.

I'll pass the question along to Nickell, who says he doesn't use email. I suspect the answer could go along two tracks: One is that it's a tough thing to try to reproduce a precise coloration depth under any circumstances. The other is that centuries of wear and tear might have had an effect that's not easily replicated by the contemporary application of pigments or other chemicals. But we'll see what Nickell has to say.

Cuba travel language dropped in budget deal (AP)

MIAMI ? Luis Damian came to the U.S. from Cuba nearly a decade ago and has never returned. Nor does he frequently send money to his relatives on the island.

Still, he doesn't understand why Cuban-American politicians from South Florida want to roll back the ability of fellow Cuban-Americans to visit and send money to family there.

"Look, I'm going to be frank. The situation is really screwed there," the Miami chef said. "The only ones who are going to be hurt are the Cuban people."

Since taking office, President Barack Obama has allowed Cuban-Americans to visit extended family on the island as many times as they want and send unlimited remittances to relatives there. But Cuban-Americans such as Damian were concerned about an amendment to the $1 trillion-plus omnibus spending package that would have returned U.S. regulations to the George W. Bush era, when Cuban-Americans could travel to Cuba only once every three years and send only $1,200 to immediate relatives on the island annually.

However, a deal on a $1 trillion spending bill was reached Thursday night after Republicans agreed to drop the language dealing with Cuba.

U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, a Cuban-American, sponsored the amendment, which the House Appropriations Committee unanimously approved this year. The Florida Republican argued that the 30 percent cut that the Cuban government takes from remittances has been propping up a dictatorship, adding billions of dollars to its coffers. He also maintained people have been abusing the spirit of the regulations by making repeated trips to sell items to Cubans that are otherwise difficult to obtain on the island.

"This is not a humanitarian issue," Diaz-Balart has told The Associated Press. "People who go there 10 or 15 times a year. It's become a business, and a very lucrative business for the Castro regime."

Damian wasn't convinced.

"The government and the officials, they always have money. They will be fine," he said. "I think the politicians don't understand because they don't have relatives on the island. They've made their life here. Most of their family is here."

Older Cuban-Americans who came shortly after the revolution and have few connections to the island tend to support limited travel and remittances. They also wield significant influence in the swing state of Florida. Although increasingly in the minority, they are far more likely to vote and contribute to political campaigns than the growing number of Cubans who have come to the U.S. in the last 20 years and who generally want to help relatives on the island any way they can.

Tomas Bilbao, executive director of the Cuba Study Group, a group founded by Cuban-American business leaders supporting greater exchange with the island, called it ironic that Cuban-American lawmakers want to reverse the law now. He noted that since Obama loosened travel restrictions to the island, the Castro government has begun to allow private enterprise and for the first time permitted Cubans on the island to buy and sell cars and houses.

But Mauricio Claver-Carone, director of the US Cuba Democracy Advocates in Washington, who favors tighter restrictions, argued the Castro government should not be rewarded for limited economic changes "at a time when (political) repression in Cuba has also more than doubled."

He also cited the more than two years that have passed since American development worker Alan Gross was detained for providing internet technology to the island's Jewish community.

Phil Peters, a Cuba expert at the Virginia-based Lexington Institute, doesn't dispute the human rights violations. He said travel restrictions aren't the answer.

"Obama should continue to stand up for human rights in Cuba. At the same time, I think we should have policies that help the average Cuban live a better life. There's no contradiction," he said.

"Before, the remittances used to be money to help your aunt buy cooking oil and clothing. Now you can send your aunt money to buy the equipment to start a business, or you can send your aunt money to buy a home, because opportunities are opening up. It would be crazy to back away."

The Democratic Plan to Destroy Mitt Romney (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The conventional wisdom among some conservative pundits is that Mitt Romney is more electable than Newt Gingrich because the Democrats would have a harder time demonizing them. The Washington Post begs to disagree.

The Democrats have already developed their plan to destroy Romney should he become the Republican nominee. The smooth, dapper businessman who created jobs and turned around failing companies will be transformed into a heartless capitalist who destroyed lives and dreams in order to enrich himself. Romney will be turned into Gordon Gekko, the villain of the Oliver Stone indictment of capitalism "Wall Street."

It might not work. The Democratic strategy is based on the supposition that large number of Americans share the disdain for capitalism that the Occupy Wall Street protestors have. But the fact the occupier movement started as a public nuisance and is ending as a parody of itself suggests the Democrats are in error.

Of course that is not the point. Just as Gingrich can be attacked for some of his baggage, Romney will be attacked for some of his. If the capitalist pig gambit does not work, the Democrats will play the Mormon card, just as they did when Romney had the temerity to run against Ted Kennedy for the Senate in 1994 despite claims to the contrary. According to Atlantic Wire, Sen. Kennedy's nephew Joe Kennedy assailed the Mormon religion as "racist." The Democrats may use code words like "weird," but it will be understood what is meant by that.

The truth of the matter is that while Democrats are not very good at governing, they are excellent practitioners of political combat. It will not matter who the Republicans nominate. The Democrats will endeavor to paint him or her as a combination of Darth Vader and Chance Gardiner, the Peter Sellers mentally challenged character who seemed profound to those around him, but was not.

Therefore Republican voters should set aside notions of who is the most electable and who is most difficult to demonize. They should instead focus when considering who to nominate on who would make the better president and who can take the fight to President Barack Obama.

Russian Scientist Discovers Giant Arctic Methane Plumes

Perhaps (crazy talk around here, I know) the free market might be able to do something about this now apparently abundant resource?

Natural gas (methane and others) is currently being flared off hundreds of drilling rigs because it's not 'economical' (ie, the free market can't figure out how to do it). Now, that is in a place with drilling rigs and other infrastructure and "all" they need to do is collect the stuff, stick it in a pipe and send it to market.

At current natural gas prices, it's a no-go.

Now, lets take a diffuse, dilute methane torch, perhaps 20 meters in diameter. This particular deposit, like the others found, is in Northern Siberia, and in fact, off the coast of Northern Siberia. A place not noted for high concentrations of industrial infrastructure. So, you have to drag everything needed to collect and process the gas to the middle of nowhere. That's rather expensive.

Nope, your happy little 'free market' isn't going to solve this particular problem.

Best Movies Of 2011

From Muppets to magic, MTV counts down the top films of the year.
By MTV News staff

Photo: Fox/ Columbia

In 2011, Daniel Radcliffe brought the "Harry Potter" franchise to a firecracker of an ending after a decade bewitching the multiplex. Ryan Gosling played kissy-face with Carey Mulligan in an elevator, then turned around and smashed a dude's skull in. Kristen Wiig made us laugh, Martin Scorsese made us gasp, and Kermit the Frog made us want to sing along.

Memorable moments, all. But what makes a great film — what makes it one of the best of the year — is not just a buzzworthy few seconds here and there, but a moviegoing experience packed with them.

How, then, do we pick the Best Movies of 2011? How do we weigh Joe Cornish's genre-busting directorial debut against Matthew Vaughn's rescue job of our favorite comic book mutants? Do we favor George Clooney's ability to elicit laughs in the most tragic of circumstances, or do we bow down to the staggeringly raw performance by Rooney Mara?

Those are questions no one person could answer. So we gathered a roundtable of the savviest minds at MTV to discuss, debate, argue and occasionally curse about everything that went down at the multiplex this year: Eric Ditzian, Josh Horowitz and Amy Wilkinson of MTV Movies and Kevin Polowy and Brooke Tarnoff of NextMovie. In the end, we came up with our 10 picks:

10. "Attack the Block"
In a year filled with alien-invasion movies from the likes of Michael Bay and J.J. Abrams, it says a lot that Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish's little indie that could, "Attack the Block," was the best of the bunch. Taking science fiction for a ride through the gang-ridden streets of South London results in a wildly inventive and hilarious twist on the genre, complete with what has to be the absolute best creature design seen in any movie all year. Believe, bruvs: This suspenseful, action-packed and endlessly charming movie was the sci-fi flick of 2011. Allow it. — Josh Wigler

9. "The Descendants"
"The Descendants" meant a change of pace for its star George Clooney. His character, Matt King, couldn't use Clooney's trademark charm to fix his broken family after a boating accident takes away his wife and the mother of his two teenage daughters. The Clooney we saw was not the suave movie star, but a confused schlub, figuring things out as he goes. The result is a complex and emotionally honest film that would be sad if it weren't so hilarious. — Kevin Sullivan

8. "50/50"
Harrowing, heartbreaking and at times hilarious, "50/50" is perhaps the most honest onscreen portrayal of cancer ever. And it's one you'll actually want to watch. The film follows 27-year-old Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he's diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, battling the disease with the help of friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) and therapist-in-training Katherine (Anna Kendrick). Based on the real-life experience of Rogen's friend Will Reiser (who penned the screenplay), "50/50" doesn't apologize for finding the funny in a bad situation. And that's why we like it. — Amy Wilkinson

7. "The Muppets"
It's "The Muppets" for the new millennium: Kermit and friends return to theaters after a painful 12-year absence, updated for a new generation by writer/co-star/"it" schlump Jason Segel and songs from "Flight of the Conchords" star Bret McKenzie. If the story starts off a little depressing — the Muppets have gone their separate ways and their studio is falling apart — that's nothing a little choreographed dancing, Amy Adams and a chicken chorus can't fix. — Brooke Tarnoff

6. "X-Men: First Class"
Matthew Vaughn's prequel had a lot of things working against it, namely Bryan Singer's two "X-Men" films and the talented actors in those films who are already associated with the classic Marvel mutants. Vaughn smartly found a way to use that to his advantage, giving fans nods to Singer's films through well-placed cameos while laying the foundation for an entirely new franchise based on the characters' backstories, anchored by the very talented and bromantic James McAvoy as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto." — Kara Warner

5. "Hugo"
With so many different ways to see a movie, the magic of going to a theater and sitting in the dark seems like an outdated idea. Martin Scorsese attempted to recapture the feeling that made the movies such a special thing in the first place with "Hugo." Through the story of an orphan boy living in a Paris train station, "Hugo" dives into the creation of movies and reminds us all of why the movies are a place to see dreams come true. — K.S.

4. "Bridesmaids"
"Bridesmaids" is one of those rare comedic gems in which everything worked: The crazy talented cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy in a killer breakout performance; the one-liners, many of which were ad-libbed; that unpleasant-but-hilarious scene at the bridal store; Jon Hamm playing a d-bag — it was all so good and so funny. And not just funny for women, funny for everyone, to the tune of a $169 million box-office gross. — K.W.

3. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
All good things must come to an end. When it came time for the "Harry Potter" series to fulfill that old adage with this summer's "Deathly Hallows, Part 2," it wasn't just a good thing. It was — if you'll forgive our sappiness — a magical thing. Watching Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint grow into their heroic owns over the past decade has been a thrilling ride filled with tragedy and hope, despair and triumph, death and life. It wasn't just the best "Potter" movie of all time; it was one of the best movies of the year. — J.W.

2. "Drive"
In a movie year that could easily have been renamed the Year of Gosling, the flasher of abs, breaker-up of street fights and all around great Canadian guy's finest performance was as a nameless driver (regardless of what the Hollywood Foreign Press might have you believe). You either wanted to be him or be with him. No matter what, you couldn't take your eyes of him. While the box-office bow of "Drive" lacked punch (to date, it has grossed $34.7 million), the film's cultural impact has been huge, inspiring some first-rate spoofs and unleashing a soundtrack that became required listening for anyone with an iPod and half a soul. There was no cooler movie in 2011, and there is probably no other movie on this list we'll still be talking about in 2021. — Eric Ditzian

1. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
Devotees of Stieg Larsson's wildly popular books (or the Swedish-language movie versions) need not fret: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is in good hands with master filmmaker David Fincher. The director follows up the excellent "Social Network" with another tour de force, injecting the murder mystery that introduces us to outcast hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) and embattled journalist (Daniel Craig) with style, intensity and relentless suspense. Mara is a revelation, and the film's daunting 160-minute runtime breezes by thanks to one heart-racing scene after the next. Dark and tough to watch at times, but a triumph all around. — Kevin Polowy

Acer To Cut Product Lines By Two Thirds In 2012, Bet Heavily On Ultrabooks

ned-stark-game-of-thronesAcer is in a bit of trouble. The company saw two consecutive quarters of net losses. Sales in the third quarter were up slightly from earlier in the year but still trailed year-over-year numbers by 30%. Things aren't looking good for the house of Acer/Gateway/Packard Bell. The company's acting CEO, J.T. Wang, is a man with a plan. In an attempt to realign the company, he is going to cut two-thirds of the company's vast product line up from current levels. It's a drastic move considering the sheer amount of pink slips the company will hand out. In the United States market alone, Acer currently sells 101 individual notebook, netbook and chromebook SKUs. The company's desktop, peripheral, and accessory lines are just as deep. Acer's acting CEO wants to trim the fat and make things a bit more simple (and cost-effective).
