Socially Anxious Kids Are Bully Targets (LiveScience.com)
Children who want to interact with their peers but find the prospect of making friends anxiety-inducing are at high risk of rejection and bullying, a new study finds.?
These "anxious-solitary" children have fewer friends than other kids their age, which can leave them vulnerable to victimization by bullies, according to study researcher Gary Ladd, a professor of family and human development at Arizona State University.
"Understanding withdrawn children's friendships is important because they have fewer contacts with children their own age," Ladd said in a statement. "Because the consequences of peer isolation can be severe, it may be particularly important for withdrawn youth to develop and participate in friendships through organized sports, play dates, and other such activities."
An earlier study published in 2010 in the journal Child Development found that bullies pick on unpopular children. Gay and lesbian students, or kids perceived to be gay or lesbian, are also at risk.
Ladd and his colleagues asked about 2,500 fifth-graders to rate their peers' behavior, including aggression, emotional sensitivity and social behavior. The researchers collected similar reports from the students' teachers. The first round of reports was taken at the beginning of the fifth-grade year, and a second round was taken at the end of the school year.
Using these reports, the researchers classified each child as non-withdrawn (kids who are social and have numerous friends), unsociable withdrawn (kids who are not social but aren't afraid of interaction with peers) and anxious-solitary withdrawn (kids who want to interact but are too anxious to do so).
Even compared with unsociable children, the researchers found, anxious-solitary withdrawn kids have fewer friends and are more likely to lose their friends over time. Anxious-solitary kids were also more emotionally sensitive than their peers and were more likely to be excluded and bullied. Having stable friendships protects children from victimization, the study found.

The Annoyance of the Three Paragraph Essay | Books - Writing ...
So we begin where we have so diligently been instructed to start, at the beginning. Our teachers berate us over topic sentences and main ideas using the terms interchangeably but stressing that they are distinctively different from each other. It is that paradox which boggles my mind and evokes writer?s block. I like to consider that I have more fulfilling things to do than to keep track of which is which in my first paragraph. I would much rather get a root canal than agonize over some imaginary division between essential two words that mean the same thing to me. Remember that the topic sentence is to introduce the subject matter. For example a proper topic sentence for piece of work would be, ?I hate three paragraph essays.? The main idea would probably be the same thing but together differently or I think you have to explain it. After deliberating through that issue and introducing the topic we are told to write a transitional sentence and push ourselves to get to the bulk of the essay where you explain your subject.
Most instructors dictate that you have at least three points of defense and/or explanation. I assume three was chosen because it is the number of the trinity or because it was inspired by Hitler?s Third Reich. The three paragraph essay is stifling to creative expression in its rigid structure. An English teacher once tried to explain the divinity of the three paragraph essay by comparing it to a triangle saying, ?The triangle is one of the strongest structural shapes, which can endure a great amount of weight that?s what makes it perfect for an essay.?
I personally don?t appreciate the comparison, because in my opinion the triangle is the most dangerous shape. It has pointy ends which can break skin depending on the degree of the angle, but that?s geometry. It has also been brought to my attention that a three paragraph essay looks like a fat chick. A small light bit of writing on top followed by a heavy middle section ending with a little bubble of words for feet. It just isn?t proportional or aesthetically pleasing. The three paragraph essay also doesn?t lend itself to an agreeable flow of thoughts. Everything of significance is crammed into the center.
Three paragraph essays read more like an E. E. Cummings poem
whereeverythingisranintoexaggeratetherateofspeechorthought. Jokes aside, it really does push everything in to close together. Readers that skim through derive very little because there are no breaks between the thoughts to slow them down to take matters into consideration. New ideas should not just be broken down into sentences they can be expanded into paragraphs so one has more room to explain. Having only one paragraph pressures writers to use concise words, and let?s face it some of us don?t like to visit words outside of: good, bad, cool, dumb, and weird.
The three paragraph essay of course cannot do without the conclusion. So, this gives the writer an opportunity to be redundant by saying what they have already wasted our time with. Three paragraph essays are rigid, terribly proportioned, and dull to look at and read. That?s why writing three paragraph essays are annoying to write.

Flexible electronics hold promise for consumer applications

New research from Wake Forest University has advanced the field of plastic-based flexible electronics by developing, for the first time, an extremely large molecule that is stable, possesses excellent electrical properties, and inexpensive to produce.
The technology, developed by Oana Jurchescu, assistant professor of physics at Wake Forest, her graduate students Katelyn Goetz and Jeremy Ward, and interdisciplinary collaborators from Stanford University, Imperial College (London), University of Kentucky and Appalachian State University, eventually may turn scientific wonders ? including artificial skin, smart bandages, flexible displays, smart windshields, wearable electronics and electronic wallpapers ? into everyday realities.
Jurchescu says plastic or organic semiconductors, produced in large volume using roll-to-roll processing, inkjet printing or spray deposition, represent the "electronics everywhere" trend of the future.
In the current consumer market, however, the word "electronic" is generally associated with the word "expensive." This is largely because products such as televisions, computers and cell phones are based on silicon, which is costly to produce. Organic electronics, however, build on carbon-based (plastic) materials, which offer not only ease of manufacturing and low cost, but also lightweight and mechanical flexibility, says Jurchescu.
The team recently published its manuscript in Advanced Materials, one of the most prestigious journals in the field of materials research.
Prior researchers predicted that larger carbon frameworks would have properties superior to their smaller counterparts, but until now there has not been an effective route to make these larger frameworks stable and soluble enough for study.
"To accelerate the use of these technologies, we need to improve our understanding of how they work," Jurchescu says. "The devices we study (field-effect transistors) are the fundamental building blocks in all modern-based electronics. Our findings shed light on the effect of the structure of the molecules on their electrical performance, and pave the way towards a design of improved materials for high-performance, low-cost, plastic-based electronics."
Jurchescu's lab is part of the physics department and the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials.
The team studied new organic semiconductor materials amenable to transistor applications and explored their structure-property relationships. Organic semiconductors are a type of plastic material characterized by a specific structure that makes them conductive. In modern electronics, a circuit uses transistors to control the current between various regions of the circuit.
The results of the published research may lead to significant technological improvements as the performance of the transistor determines the switching speed, contrast details, and other key properties of the display.

Emerging economies shouldn't rely on dollar: economist (Reuters)
JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (Reuters) ? Emerging economies should find other ways to buffer themselves from global crises than stockpiling U.S. government debt, a prominent economist argued on Saturday.
U.S. Treasuries and the debt of other advanced nations may be liquid, but it is far from safe, Cornell University professor Eswar Prasad said in a paper presented to a group of central bankers gathered here.
Emerging countries seeking protection from global shocks by individually stocking up on U.S. debt would be better off banding together to create a pool of funds that could be drawn on in a crisis, he argued. Doing so would give them a backstop should they need it, without saddling their national investment portfolios with debt that could turn sour.
Sharply rising levels of public borrowing and weak growth prospects in the United States mean that over time the dollar will continue to decline against the currencies of faster-growing emerging markets, eroding the value of emerging nations' foreign investments, he said.
And the risks are not only for the long-term.
The United States' near brush with default earlier this month, as lawmakers refused to raise the country's borrowing ceiling until a deficit-cutting deal was reached, brought the potential pitfalls of holding U.S. debt into sharp relief.
"As demonstrated by recent events in the euro zone, bond investors -- both domestic and foreign -- can quickly turn against a vulnerable country with high debt levels, leaving the country little breathing room on fiscal tightening and precipitating a crisis," Prasad wrote. "The U.S. is large, special and central to global finance, but the tolerance of bond investors may have its limits."
The dollar has long been the world's main reserve currency, and since the financial crisis emerging economies have built their reserves by buying Treasuries and the debt of a few other advanced economies, according to Prasad.
Any change could hurt the ability of the United States to borrow at low rates despite soaring debt levels.
That would turn the tables in a world where traditionally it was developed nations that pressured developing ones to bring their finances under control, he said.
"It is high time for advanced economies to take the tonic of macroeconomic and structural reforms that they have for so long dispensed to the emerging markets," he said.

According to the New York Times, ?The Obama administration is considering further actions to strengthen the housing market, but the bar is high: plans must help a broad swath of homeowners, stimulate the economy and cost next to nothing??

One proposal would allow millions of homeowners with government-backed mortgages to refinance them at today?s lower interest rates, about 4 percent, according to two people briefed on the administration?s discussions who asked not to be identified because they were not allowed to talk about the information? ? The recovery of the housing market is essential to the long-term stability of the country?s economy. ?But political shenanigans, toxic mortgage products, and the sheer inability and profit grabbing of our financial institutions have consistently impeded the needed balance required to get housing back on track.
With interest rates at historic lows, now is the time for the consumers/voters to demand innovation and execution in the real estate and mortgage markets.
A series of potential ideas are rockin? and rollin? across legislators? desks, but is getting the job done right simply a mission impossible when it comes to the government???
Past programs have only allowed small numbers of homeowners to qualify, so even though the program may be a great idea, the execution has been a supreme failure.
Is the refinancing proposal the right solution? ?They have to do something, but is this too little too late? ?And what about those who are under water more than 25%?
I strongly believe they need to increase FHA loan limits in addition to taking steps to address the other issues facing housing.
Simply allowing SOME folks to refinance will NOT rectify the complex situation facing housing.

Obama finds refuge among close friends on vacation (AP)
VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. ? They golf with him, they vacation with him, their kids and his kids hang out. To them, he's Barack, not Mr. President. He can be teased and tease back.
They form the trusted circle of tight-lipped friends who've sustained Barack Obama through good times and bad since his days in Chicago, from Hawaii to Washington to Martha's Vineyard and back again.
For the most powerful man on the planet who nonetheless may have one of the loneliest jobs, a close band of buddies ? Eric Whitaker, Martin Nesbitt and Valerie Jarrett form the core ? has become a second family, to a degree replacing the one he lost or never had with the absence of his father and death of his mother in 1995.
Apart from wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha, they're the people he's closest with. And to the president, in his private life a creature of habit, there's a comfort in turning to trusted friends with whom confidence runs deep and there is no question about where loyalties lie.
"I think that for a president of the United States who's always on, it's a relief to be around people who've known you for a very long time so that you can just be comfortable, No. 1 being yourself, and No. 2 knowing that you can trust them completely," Jarrett said in an interview.
"There's a level of trust that has withstood the test of time. He doesn't have to worry about his friends leaking the details of his vacation to the press," she said.
"He enjoys being around people who are completely comfortable teasing him and treating him like a friend and not the president of the United States."
The three friendships date back to Obama's years in Chicago and he's maintained the ties remarkably close, even though he hasn't returned home to Chicago as much as he once said he had hoped to.
This summer, Jarrett, whom Obama brought to the White House as a senior adviser, and Whitaker, an executive at the University of Chicago Medical Center, vacationed with Obama on the Vineyard, the exclusive island off the coast of Massachusetts where Obama has been coming for more than 15 years ? though not as long as Jarrett, who's been visiting since she was a young girl. On Friday, Obama cut his planned 10-day vacation on the island a day short to come back to Washington ahead of Hurricane Irene.
For Obama the annual vacation has assumed a sameness, providing an oasis of stability and normalcy that's missing in other aspects of his life. He golfs at the same island courses every year ? and there's Whitaker, sitting next to him as he drives the cart. He and Michelle and the girls hit the same bike trail and shop at the same book store. They buy fried shrimp every year at Nancy's seafood restaurant, and sun themselves at the same beach ? and Jarrett is there, too, as the president relaxes and watches his girls swim in the ocean.
Nesbitt, who started and heads an airport parking company, doesn't come to the Vineyard although the friends hope to get him here sometime. But on Obama's other annual getaway, in his home state of Hawaii, they're all together again.
Nesbitt and Whitaker also turn up frequently in Washington, sometimes at unexpected times. The day after Obama struck a deal with Republicans in April to avert a government shutdown, he paid a quick, unannounced trip to the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall to show that the nation's parks and monuments were open for business. Whitaker was at his side, and the two bounded cheerfully together up the imposing stone steps.
The core group met and cemented their relationship through various Chicago connections, including ties at the University of Chicago, where Nesbitt and Michelle Obama's brother attended business school together. Jarrett first met the Obamas in 1991, when she hired Michelle, then engaged to Barack Obama, to work in Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's administration.
The White House declined to make Nesbitt or Whitaker available for comment, and neither returned a message left at their offices.
Obama has other friends too ? like Comcast chief executive Brian Roberts, whose Martha's Vineyard mansion he visited this week; and UBS executive Robert Wolf, who rounded out one of his Martha's Vineyard golf foursomes ? but none quite so close. And wherever Obama goes in the world one of the three may be found at his side. They provide Obama a listening ear if he wants one on policy issues, but if he doesn't want to talk shop, then they just let him relax.
When they're hanging out, they watch movies, read, eat, play board games ? the things people do on vacation, aides say. Last summer, to Jarrett's chagrin, the White House publicized the fact that Obama had beaten her at Scrabble.
Harvard law Prof. Charles Ogletree, a friend, one-time teacher and fellow Vineyard vacationer who hosted a reception for Obama on the island last Saturday, said the president showed up with "no suit, no tie, and a wide smile and a sense of relief" about being in friendly territory.
"As you walk into a room and you see him, you see how relaxed, how unguarded, how open and funny, and yet how serious when it comes to playing Scrabble," Ogletree said. "There's no privilege to being the president or first lady, it's all about friends, having fun, enjoying family and engaging in serious trash talk with the winner."

Iraq: How not to overthrow a dictator (AP)
BAGHDAD ? Iraqis who lived through the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein see eery similarities in the scenes of Libyans parading through Tripoli ripping up posters of Moammar Gadhafi. But Iraqis also saw looting, bloodshed and bombings in the days and years since.
"A lot of people think that freedom means doing whatever you want to do," said Saad Abbas, who witnessed the jubilant cheering when a statue of Saddam Hussein was torn down by American troops steps from Baghdad's Palestine Hotel.
Libyans "are going to have revenge, stealing from the shops. A lot of problems will happen," Abbas said in an interview at the hotel, which he manages.
Skirmishing, some intense, continues in Tripoli. But Gadhafi's regime seems all but finished, with his leading opponents who had established their interim administration, the National Transitional Council, in eastern Libya earlier now moving into Tripoli.
The Iraq conflict provides a sober lesson: Winning the peace is often harder than winning the war.
Libya's rebel military chief Abdel-Hakim Belhaj seems aware of the challenge, telling Al-Jazeera television Tuesday: "We ask God to bless our country with stability."
Belhaj also called on Libyans to act responsibly.
"We need security for our people, justice and prosperity," he said.
There are of course key differences between Iraq eight years ago and Libya today. Although Libyan rebels have had NATO support, the battle to overthrow Gadhafi was an internal uprising galvanized by domestic dissent and propelled by Libyan ground forces. The presence of U.S. troops on Iraqi soil almost immediately became a rallying cry for both Sunni resistance groups and later Shiite militant groups, said Habib.
The lessons of Iraq, as well as Afghanistan, were on the minds of many in the West who feared another drawn-out conflict should the U.S. or NATO send troops into Libya.
Libya's neighborhood also differs from Iraq's. Tunisia and Egypt, on Libya's borders, are themselves going through democratic transitions that can serve as a model for Libya.
Iraq, nestled between Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia and Shiite dominated Iran, essentially became a battleground for the two meddling neighbors, said Michael Hanna of The Century Foundation .
Libya does not have the stark sectarian and religious differences that drove violence to such horrific levels in Iraq. But Libya does have tribal divisions that could prove deadly if those with ties to Gadhafi feel excluded.
In Libya now, the short-term challenge is securing the capital. The undermanned American forces, with little plan for securing the country, never did that in Iraq, where the National Museum was among the sites looted.
Paul Bremer, the head of the American-backed Coalition Provisional Authority who essentially ruled Iraq during the first year of Saddam's ouster, disbanded the Iraqi Army, leading to tens of thousands of angry Iraqis on the streets and fueling the insurgency.
Hanna of The Century Foundation said the rebels' governmental body, the National Transitional Council, has been eager to show that it is securing Tripoli.
"The security vacuum that opened up right after the fall of Baghdad and the looting, that was seared into people's minds," he said.
The long-term challenges may be tougher. The building blocks of democracy and freedom ? parliaments, parties and credible elections ? won't just fall into place.
Jabir Habib, professor of political science at Baghdad University, said Libya should move faster than Iraq on important issues. Iraq's first elections weren't held until January 2005, nearly two years after the invasion, and the constitution wasn't approved by voters until October 2005 when Iraq was almost into full-scale civil war.
Iraq also set an early policy of revenge and not reconciliation. Under a process called de-Baathification started by the Coalition Provisional Authority, Iraqis with ties to Saddam's ruling Baath Party lost their jobs.
"Many of the qualified or good people, some of them were the wealth of Iraq, were excluded from their positions," said Iraqi human rights activist Hana Adwar. "If Libyans do this, I fear that will be chaos for the state."
Mahmoud Jibril, the head of Libya's opposition government, told reporters in Paris on Wednesday that his plan for the transition to democracy started with the formation of a national congress to which all Libyan cities would send delegates, and which would select a committee to write a constitution. He said parliamentary elections would follow the constitution within four months, and the parliament speaker will be the interim president. Next will be presidential elections.
Already in Libya, former Gadhafi loyalists have taken key roles in the opposition. Jibril promised "no more alienation."
What may be the most lasting lesson of the Iraq conflict may be how difficult it is to maintain unity once the celebrations over a dictator's ouster is gone. Right now, Libyan rebels are united in their desire to oust Gadhafi and his regime. But so were Iraqi leaders and now the government is beset by infighting.
"They were together because their enemy was one: Saddam and the Baathists," said Abbas. "Over there in Libya, they have one enemy: Gadhafi and his family, his tribe. When they leave, the differences between them will appear."

Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., goes into effect. Patsky says ?S.B. 170 is designed to assist non-delinquent borrowers in refinancing an existing Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac home mortgage by banning a high, ?risk-based lender fee.? The bill requires banks to offer low interest refinance rates to a homeowner whose loan exceeds the value of the home.? Patsky states this would make refinance of existing residential or manufactured home loans easier by banning the high risk-based fee. ?One owner of a manufactured home permanently attached to the land said she has been shopping to refinance, and she is also appealing the county tax assessor valuation of her property because of declining neighborhood home values. The manufactured home was purchased a few years ago at $115,000. A search of comparable neighborhood home values showed a similar home that recently sold at only $95,000. If the homeowner can refinance her existing loan at a lower interest rate, her monthly savings could be significant and soften the sting of declining home values.? U.S. SB 170 is known as the ?Helping Responsible Homeowners Act.? Co-sponsored by Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-GA makes this a bi-partisan bill, one Patsky believes would benefit homeowners and the economy.

Is Vocational Education The Right Choice For You?
Since the economic slowdown began in 2008, vocational training has become incredibly popular throughout the U.S. with vocational colleges experiencing an incredible 20% annual increase in enrollment as a result. Vocational schools are clearly an excellent option for many people, but are they right for you? Arriving at this decision requires weighing the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing trade school programs as the vehicle to reach your eventual career goal.
This guide analyzes the advantages and drawbacks associated with trade colleges, and looks at whether or not vocational schooling is the most effective way to enter your desired profession.
The Benefits of Vocational Schools
There were several studies over the last few years on the successes of vocational school graduates in the labor force as compared with their traditionally-educated and trained colleagues. Their findings consistently agreed that vocationally-trained professional people not only earned more than their university-schooled colleagues right after graduating, but continued to at least equal them in both position and salary all through their careers. It should be noted that these conclusions were not relevant to each and every industry, but the general trend did show that vocational school graduates compared very well with their competition in the job market.
This section outlines what the author considers to be the most-important advantages that trade colleges hold over traditional colleges and universities.
Focus on Skills Rather than Academics
Those students who learn easier by working on things than by researching the idea behind them are the ones who usually shine in trade school programs. In vocational training courses, you spend your time actually getting hands-on practice applying the skills that will ultimately be required in your profession ? not reading about how to do things in a textbook.
Start Your Career Sooner
While four-year college students are still in classes completing their degrees, two-year vocational school graduates are already fully immersed in their professions and earning a good paycheck.
Help with Finding a Job
As soon as their students graduate, almost all vocational colleges make a serious effort to quickly put them in jobs. In a 2006 research project, the U.S. Department of Education determined that trade schools? claims about their success at putting graduates in jobs (the majority of trade schools claim a 90% success rate or higher) are not overstated.
In its findings, the department established that approximately 97% of recent vocational school graduates became employed in less than six months of earning their degree or certification, and over 80% of them were employed in their field of study. This rate of success was not just a powerful endorsement for vocational education on the whole, but revealed that it was more effective at placing graduates in relevant jobs than were four-year colleges.
Less Demanding Academic Entrance Requirements
If you are someone who has not traditionally done well in the classroom, or who has not graduated from high school, you?ll find that these challenges will not automatically prevent you from enrolling in a trade college. While the majority of accredited colleges do want applicants to have a high school degree, some will accept relevant job experience, letters of recommendation from managers and the like instead.
The Disadvantages of Vocational Schools
In the same way there are major benefits that vocational schooling holds over conventional colleges, there are also several significant disadvantages. The subsequent disadvantages are generally regarded as the most significant.
Price of Tuition
The more desirable vocational schools are ?for-profit?, and as such place high price tags on their tuitions. By way of example, although the costs do vary considerably from one program to the other, it is not uncommon for the two-year cost at many schools to reach as high as $40,000. The good thing is that there are many financial assistance designated for vocational training students every year in the U.S. ? so much, truth be told, that portions of it often go unused.
Competition for Work
Among the complaints against vocational schools is that they sometimes flood specific fields with too many qualified job applicants, who end up competing against one another and drive salaries down. Regardless of whether or not this situation applies to your field of study, it is something that any future trade school student should think about prior to diving into a vocational training program.
Quality of Instruction
Although in reality it is probably an exception and not the rule, a handful of trade colleges have been accused of hiring teachers whose teaching abilities are not up to par. This view is often influenced by the perception that colleges employ people who are highly touted for their vocational skills, without taking into consideration their abilities as an educator. It merits repeating that this is a generalization that is occasionally made about trade schools, and that fully-accredited institutions are obligated to only employ those educators who are able to meet their state Department of Education?s quality standards.
Overly Specialized Training
For some trade school students, vocational schooling?s concentration on teaching only those proficiencies relevant to their career is a positive, but for others it is seen as a negative. The reasoning behind this viewpoint is that, in the event you eventually decide to change professions and go into a new industry, your vocational education and training will be so focused upon one area that you might be seen as unqualified to do anything else.
Is Vocational School Your Best Choice?
The previously mentioned disadvantages and advantages of vocational training are only some of the factors that you need to consider before enrolling in a trade college. Equally important is researching your individual career objective, and finding out if earning a trade school certificate and degree is viewed as a practical way of gaining entry. What you will find is that employers in certain fields prefer hiring people with trade school degrees, while others opt for university graduates or people who have learned their trade as an apprentice.
Ultimately, trade schools can certainly prepare you for an exciting, lucrative career in a wide variety of industries. It is important to remember, however, that vocational programs are not the only approach, nor always the best means, to reach your goals in every industry.

The Virgin Group boss said about 20 people, including Winslet, her children, and his mother were staying in the eight-bedroom Great House on Necker, his private isle in the British Virgin Islands when it was struck by lightning during a tropical storm early Monday.
Branson said no one was hurt. He said in his blog that he wanted to offer "many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year (old) mum out of the main house to safety." He joked that Winslet "was wondering when a director was going to shout 'CUT!'"
Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 yards (meters) away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25.
He said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds, and Sam managed to help evacuate Winslet and other guests from the house. Branson said the guests, including his daughter Holly, 29, all managed to get out safely.
Tropical Storm Irene walloped the Virgin islands and headed towards Puerto Rico late Sunday and early Monday, strengthening into a hurricane Monday with winds of about 80mph (130 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
Winslet's spokeswoman, Sara Keene, confirmed the actress was unharmed.
Branson said the house was "completely destroyed" and the fire was not entirely out Monday.
"My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs which is very sad," Branson said.
He said he planned to rebuild the house "as soon as we can."
"We'll all stay here for the time being," he said. "There's a lot of damage and we won't be able to stick it back together again right away."

LONDON ? Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet helped rescue Richard Branson's elderly mother from a fire that destroyed his Caribbean home.
The Virgin Group boss said in his blog that he wanted to offer "many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year (old) mum out of the main house to safety." He joked that Winslet "was wondering when a director was going to shout 'CUT!'
In a separate statement Tuesday, Branson praised Winslet's two children, 10-year-old Mia and 7-year-old Joe, who were also staying in the house when it caught fire. He called them "two of the bravest kids I've ever come across."
Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 yards (meters) away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25. He said Sam noticed the main house in flames and ran over to make sure all the guests had got out. Branson said he also jumped out of bed and ran over to help.
"I tried to get some sympathy for the fact that I'd jumped out of bed naked and rushed to the Great House in pitch darkness and hurricane force winds and ran straight in to a cactus bush," Branson said. "The sympathy was not forthcoming for my injuries."
Branson said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. Monday during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds. He said Tuesday that there is still smoke rising from the house.
Branson, 60, bought the island in the early 1980s and began building the Great House in 1982. He also has developed an exclusive eco-resort on the island showcasing renewable energy technology.
His daughter Holly, who was staying at the house along with Winslet, was due to get married there in December. Branson said the wedding would still take place on Necker Island, and said guests may camp on the beach if the house is not rebuilt in time.
